H2O: An Autonomic, Resource-Aware Distributed Database System
This paper presents the design of an autonomic, resource-aware distributed
database which enables data to be backed up and shared without complex manual
administration. The database, H2O, is designed to make use of unused resources
on workstation machines. Creating and maintaining highly-available, replicated
database systems can be difficult for untrained users, and costly for IT
departments. H2O reduces the need for manual administration by autonomically
replicating data and load-balancing across machines in an enterprise.
Provisioning hardware to run a database system can be unnecessarily costly as
most organizations already possess large quantities of idle resources in
workstation machines. H2O is designed to utilize this unused capacity by using
resource availability information to place data and plan queries over
workstation machines that are already being used for other tasks. This paper
discusses the requirements for such a system and presents the design and

Research and Development Workstation Environment: the new class of Current Research Information Systems
Against the backdrop of the development of modern technologies in the field
of scientific research the new class of Current Research Information Systems
(CRIS) and related intelligent information technologies has arisen. It was
called - Research and Development Workstation Environment (RDWE) - the
comprehensive problem-oriented information systems for scientific research and
development lifecycle support. The given paper describes design and development
fundamentals of the RDWE class systems. The RDWE class system's generalized
information model is represented in the article as a three-tuple composite web
service that include: a set of atomic web services, each of them can be
designed and developed as a microservice or a desktop application, that allows
them to be used as an independent software separately; a set of functions, the
functional filling-up of the Research and Development Workstation Environment;
a subset of atomic web services that are required to implement function of
composite web service. In accordance with the fundamental information model of
the RDWE class the system for supporting research in the field of ontology
engineering - the automated building of applied ontology in an arbitrary domain
area, scientific and technical creativity - the automated preparation of
application documents for patenting inventions in Ukraine was developed. It was
called - Personal Research Information System. A distinctive feature of such
systems is the possibility of their problematic orientation to various types of
scientific activities by combining on a variety of functional services and
adding new ones within the cloud integrated environment. The main results of
our work are focused on enhancing the effectiveness of the scientist's research

The SNS Cryogenic Control System: Experiences in Collaboration
The cryogenic system for the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) is designed by
Jefferson Laboratory (JLab) personnel and is based on the existing JLab
facility. Our task is to use the JLab control system design [2] as much as
practical while remaining consistent with SNS control system standards. Some
aspects of the systems are very similar, including equipment to be controlled,
the need for PID loops and automatic sequences, and the use of EPICS. There are
differences in device naming, system hardware, and software tools. The
cryogenic system is the first SNS system to be developed using SNS standards.

Automated information retrieval using CLIPS
Expert systems have considerable potential to assist computer users in managing the large volume of information available to them. One possible use of an expert system is to model the information retrieval interests of a human user and then make recommendations to the user as to articles of interest. At Cal Poly, a prototype expert system written in the C Language Integrated Production System (CLIPS) serves as an Automated Information Retrieval System (AIRS). AIRS monitors a user's reading preferences, develops a profile of the user, and then evaluates items returned from the information base. When prompted by the user, AIRS returns a list of items of interest to the user. In order to minimize the impact on system resources, AIRS is designed to run in the background during periods of light system use
