    Adaptive Multi-Functional Space Systems for Micro-Climate Control

    This report summarizes the work done during the Adaptive Multifunctional Systems for Microclimate Control Study held at the Caltech Keck Institute for Space Studies (KISS) in 2014-2015. Dr. Marco Quadrelli (JPL), Dr. James Lyke (AFRL), and Prof. Sergio Pellegrino (Caltech) led the Study, which included two workshops: the first in May of 2014, and another in February of 2015. The Final Report of the Study presented here describes the potential relevance of adaptive multifunctional systems for microclimate control to the missions outlined in the 2010 NRC Decadal Survey. The objective of the Study was to adapt the most recent advances in multifunctional reconfigurable and adaptive structures to enable a microenvironment control to support space exploration in extreme environments (EE). The technical goal was to identify the most efficient materials, architectures, structures and means of deployment/reconfiguration, system autonomy and energy management solutions needed to optimally project/generate a micro-environment around space assets. For example, compact packed thin-layer reflective structures unfolding to large areas can reflect solar energy, warming and illuminating assets such as exploration rovers on Mars or human habitats on the Moon. This novel solution is called an energy-projecting multifunctional system (EPMFS), which are composed of Multifunctional Systems (MFS) and Energy-Projecting Systems (EPS)

    Improving the performance of a dismounted Future Force Warrior by means of C4I2SR

    This thesis comprises seven peer-reviewed articles and examines systems and applications suitable for increasing Future Force Warrior performance, minimizing collateral damage, improving situational awareness and Common Operational Picture. Based on a literature study, missing functionalities of Future Force Warrior were identified and new ideas, concepts and solutions were created as part of early stages of Systems of Systems creation. These introduced ideas have not yet been implemented or tested in combat and for this reason benefit analyses are excluded. The main results of this thesis include the following: A new networking concept, Wireless Polling Sensor Network, which is a swarm of a few Unmanned Aerial Vehicles forming an ad-hoc network and polling a large number of fixed sensor nodes. The system is more robust in a military environment than traditional Wireless Sensor Networks. A Business Process approach to Service Oriented Architecture in a tactical setting is a concept for scheduling and sharing limited resources. New components to military Service Oriented Architecture have been introduced in the thesis. Other results of the thesis include an investigation of the use of Free Space Optics in tactical communications, a proposal for tracking neutral forces, a system for upgrading simple collaboration tools for command, control and collaboration purposes, a three-level hierarchy of Future Force Warrior, and methods for reducing incidents of fratricide

    Artificial intelligence (AI) is not only undergoing a renaissance in its technical development, but is also starting to shape deterrence relations among nucleararmed states. This is already evident in East Asia, where asymmetries of power and capability have long driven nuclear posture and weapon acquisition. Continuing this trend, integration of AI into military platforms has the potential to offer weaker nuclear-armed states the opportunity to reset imbalances in capabilities, while at the same time exacerbating concerns that stronger states may use AI to further solidify their dominance and to engage in more provocative actions. This paradox of perceptions, as it is playing out in East Asia, is fuelled by a series of national biases and assumptions that permeate decision-making. They are also likely to serve as the basis for AI algorithms that drive future conventional and nuclear platforms

    Cyber-Physical Threat Intelligence for Critical Infrastructures Security

    Modern critical infrastructures comprise of many interconnected cyber and physical assets, and as such are large scale cyber-physical systems. Hence, the conventional approach of securing these infrastructures by addressing cyber security and physical security separately is no longer effective. Rather more integrated approaches that address the security of cyber and physical assets at the same time are required. This book presents integrated (i.e. cyber and physical) security approaches and technologies for the critical infrastructures that underpin our societies. Specifically, it introduces advanced techniques for threat detection, risk assessment and security information sharing, based on leading edge technologies like machine learning, security knowledge modelling, IoT security and distributed ledger infrastructures. Likewise, it presets how established security technologies like Security Information and Event Management (SIEM), pen-testing, vulnerability assessment and security data analytics can be used in the context of integrated Critical Infrastructure Protection. The novel methods and techniques of the book are exemplified in case studies involving critical infrastructures in four industrial sectors, namely finance, healthcare, energy and communications. The peculiarities of critical infrastructure protection in each one of these sectors is discussed and addressed based on sector-specific solutions. The advent of the fourth industrial revolution (Industry 4.0) is expected to increase the cyber-physical nature of critical infrastructures as well as their interconnection in the scope of sectorial and cross-sector value chains. Therefore, the demand for solutions that foster the interplay between cyber and physical security, and enable Cyber-Physical Threat Intelligence is likely to explode. In this book, we have shed light on the structure of such integrated security systems, as well as on the technologies that will underpin their operation. We hope that Security and Critical Infrastructure Protection stakeholders will find the book useful when planning their future security strategies

    Fire Protection Life Safety Analysis- Bachelor Enlisted Quarters

    This Bachelor Enlisted Quarters (BEQ) shall be constructed, arranged, equipped, maintained, and operated in accordance with this report and applicable criteria to ensure a minimum level of life safety and property protection is provided from actual and potential fire hazards. The goal is to ensure the occupants are provided with an environment that is reasonably safe from fire. We accomplish this goal by protecting occupants not intimate with the initial fire development, and by improving the survivability of occupants intimate with the initial fire development. The protection described in this report takes on many forms, from active protection, such as fire protection systems, to passive protection, such as fire resistive construction. The applicable prescriptive-based design requirements outlined in the building and life safety codes are summarized, as well as a detailed description of the active fire protection systems provided in the BEQ. A performance-based analysis was utilized to evaluate the effectiveness of the prescriptive based requirements. Fire behavior predictions and fire protection response time estimates were compared to Computational Fluid Dynamic simulated results. The performance-based evaluation determined the required safe egress time (RSET) versus the available safe egress time (ASET). Based upon the results, the BEQ was designed and constructed to provide sufficient egress time to occupants prior to them being exposed to untenable conditions
