An autonomic delivery framework for HTTP adaptive streaming in multicast-enabled multimedia access networks
The consumption of multimedia services over HTTP-based delivery mechanisms has recently gained popularity due to their increased flexibility and reliability. Traditional broadcast TV channels are now offered over the Internet, in order to support Live TV for a broad range of consumer devices. Moreover, service providers can greatly benefit from offering external live content (e. g., YouTube, Hulu) in a managed way. Recently, HTTP Adaptive Streaming (HAS) techniques have been proposed in which video clients dynamically adapt their requested video quality level based on the current network and device state. Unlike linear TV, traditional HTTP- and HAS-based video streaming services depend on unicast sessions, leading to a network traffic load proportional to the number of multimedia consumers. In this paper we propose a novel HAS-based video delivery architecture, which features intelligent multicasting and caching in order to decrease the required bandwidth considerably in a Live TV scenario. Furthermore we discuss the autonomic selection of multicasted content to support Video on Demand (VoD) sessions. Experiments were conducted on a large scale and realistic emulation environment and compared with a traditional HAS-based media delivery setup using only unicast connections
Performance analysis and application development of hybrid WiMAX-WiFi IP video surveillance systems
Traditional Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) analogue cameras installed in buildings and other areas of security interest necessitates the use of cable lines. However, analogue systems are limited by distance; and storing analogue data requires huge space or bandwidth. Wired systems are also prone to vandalism, they cannot be installed in a hostile terrain and in heritage sites, where cabling would distort original design. Currently, there is a paradigm shift towards wireless solutions (WiMAX, Wi-Fi, 3G, 4G) to complement and in some cases replace the wired system. A wireless solution of the Fourth-Generation Surveillance System (4GSS) has been proposed in this thesis. It is a hybrid WiMAX-WiFi video surveillance system. The performance analysis of the hybrid WiMAX-WiFi is compared with the conventional WiMAX surveillance models. The video surveillance models and the algorithm that exploit the advantages of both WiMAX and Wi-Fi for scenarios of fixed and mobile wireless cameras have been proposed, simulated and compared with the mathematical/analytical models. The hybrid WiMAX-WiFi video surveillance model has been extended to include a Wireless Mesh configuration on the Wi-Fi part, to improve the scalability and reliability. A performance analysis for hybrid WiMAX-WiFi system with an appropriate Mobility model has been considered for the case of mobile cameras. A security software application for mobile smartphones that sends surveillance images to either local or remote servers has been developed. The developed software has been tested, evaluated and deployed in low bandwidth Wi-Fi wireless network environments. WiMAX is a wireless metropolitan access network technology that provides broadband services to the connected customers. Major modules and units of WiMAX include the Customer Provided Equipment (CPE), the Access Service Network (ASN) which consist one or more Base Stations (BS) and the Connectivity Service Network (CSN). Various interfaces exist between each unit and module. WiMAX is based on the IEEE 802.16 family of standards. Wi-Fi, on the other hand, is a wireless access network operating in the local area network; and it is based on the IEEE 802.11 standards
Models and Methods for Network Selection and Balancing in Heterogeneous Scenarios
The outbreak of 5G technologies for wireless communications can be considered a response to the need for widespread coverage, in terms of connectivity and bandwidth, to guarantee broadband services, such as streaming or on-demand programs offered by the main television networks or new generation services based on augmented and virtual reality (AR / VR).
The purpose of the study conducted for this thesis aims to solve two of the main problems that will occur with the outbreak of 5G, that is, the search for the best possible connectivity, in order to offer users the resources necessary to take advantage of the new generation services, and multicast as required by the eMBMS.
The aim of the thesis is the search for innovative algorithms that will allow to obtain the best connectivity to offer users the resources necessary to use the 5G services in a heterogeneous scenario. Study UF that allows you to improve the search for the best candidate network and to achieve a balance that allows you to avoid congestion of the chosen networks. To achieve these two important focuses, I conducted a study on the main mathematical methods that made it possible to select the network based on QoS parameters based on the type of traffic made by users. A further goal was to improve the computational computation performance they present.
Furthermore, I carried out a study in order to obtain an innovative algorithm that would allow the management of multicast. The algorithm that has been implemented responds to the needs present in the eMBMS, in realistic scenarios
Interference cancellation and network coding for underwater communication systems
It is widely believed that wider access to the aquatic environment will enhance human knowledge and understanding of the world's oceans which constitute the major part of our planet. Hence, the current development of underwater sensing and communication systems will produce scientific, economic and social benefits. New applications will be enabled, such as deeper ocean observation, environmental monitoring, surveying or search and rescue missions. Underwater communications differ from terrestrial communications due to the unpredictable and complex ocean conditions, relying on acoustic waves which are affected by many factors like large propagation losses, long latency, limited bandwidth capacity and channel stability, posing great challenges for reliable data transport in this kind of networks. The aim of this project is to design a future underwater acoustic communication system for dense traffic situations investigating the possibility of Medium Access with Interference Cancellation and Network Coding. Adaptive delay-constrained internet media transport
Reliable transport layer Internet protocols do not satisfy the requirements of packetized, real-time multimedia streams. The available thesis motivates and defines predictable reliability as a novel, capacity-approaching transport paradigm, supporting an application-specific level of reliability under a strict delay constraint. This paradigm is being implemented into a new protocol design -- the Predictably Reliable Real-time Transport protocol (PRRT). In order to predictably achieve the desired level of reliability, proactive and reactive error control must be optimized under the application\u27s delay constraint. Hence, predictably reliable error control relies on stochastic modeling of the protocol response to the modeled packet loss behavior of the network path. The result of the joined modeling is periodically evaluated by a reliability control policy that validates the protocol configuration under the application constraints and under consideration of the available network bandwidth. The adaptation of the protocol parameters is formulated into a combinatorial optimization problem that is solved by a fast search algorithm incorporating explicit knowledge about the search space. Experimental evaluation of PRRT in real Internet scenarios demonstrates that predictably reliable transport meets the strict QoS constraints of high-quality, audio-visual streaming applications.ZuverlĂ€ssige Internet-Protokolle auf Transport-Layer erfĂŒllen nicht die Anforderungen paketierter Echtzeit-Multimediaströme. Dieses Paradigma wird in ein neues Protokoll-Design implementiert -- das Predictably Reliable Real-time Transport Protokoll (PRRT). Um prĂ€dizierbar einen gewĂŒnschten Grad an ZuverlĂ€ssigkeit zu erreichen, mĂŒssen proaktive und reaktive MaĂnahmen zum Fehlerschutz unter der Zeitbegrenzung der Anwendung optimiert werden. Daher beruht Fehlerschutz mit Predictable Reliability auf der stochastischen Modellierung des Protokoll-Verhaltens unter modelliertem Paketverlust-Verhalten des Netzwerkpfades. Traffic engineering multi-layer optimization for wireless mesh network transmission a campus network routing protocol transmission performance inhancement
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel UniversityThe wireless mesh network is a potential network for the future due to its excellent inherent characteristic for dynamic self-healing, self-configuration and self-organization. It also has the advantage of easy interoperability networking and the ability to form multi-linked ad-hoc networks. It has a decentralized topology, is cheap and highly scalable. Furthermore, its ease in deployment and easy maintenance are other inherent networking qualities. These aforementioned qualities of the wireless mesh network bring advantages to transmission capability of heterogeneous networks. However, transmissions in wireless mesh network create comparative performance based challenges such as congestion, load-balancing, scalability over increasing networks and coverage capacity. Consequently, these challenges and problems in the routing and switching of packets in the wireless mesh network routing protocols led to a proposal on the resolution of these failures with a combination algorithm and a management based security for the network and its transmitted packets. There are equally contentious services like reliability of the network and quality of service for real-time multimedia traffic flows with other challenges such as path computation and selection in the wireless mesh network.
This thesis is therefore a cumulative proposal to the resolution of the outlined challenges and open research areas posed by using wireless mesh network routing protocol. It advances the resolution of these challenges in the mesh environment using a hybrid optimization â traffic engineering, to increase the effectiveness and the reliability of the network. It also proffers a cumulative resolution of the diverse contributions on wireless mesh network routing protocol and transmission. Adaptation and optimization are carried out on the wireless mesh network designed network using traffic engineering mechanism and technique. The research examines the patterns of mesh packet transmission and evaluates the challenges and failures in the mesh network packet transmission. It develops a solution based algorithm for resolutions and proposes the traffic engineering based solution.. These resultant performances and analysis are usually tested and compared over wireless mesh IEEE802.11n or other older proposed documented solution.
This thesis used a carefully designed campus mesh network to show a comparative evaluation of an optimal performance of the mesh nodes and routers over a normal IEE802.11n based wireless domain network to show differentiation by optimization using the created algorithms. Furthermore, the indexes of performance being the metric are used to measure the utility and the reliability, including capacity and throughput at the destination during traffic engineered transmission. In addition, the security of these transmitted data and packets are optimized under a traffic engineered technique. Finally, this thesis offers an understanding to the security contribution using traffic engineering resolution to create a management algorithm for processing and computation of the wireless mesh networks security needs. The results of this thesis confirmed, completed and extended the existing predictions with real measurement
Robotic 3D Reconstruction Utilising Structure from Motion
Sensing the real-world is a well-established and continual problem in the field of robotics. Investigations into autonomous aerial and underwater vehicles have extended this challenge into sensing, mapping and localising in three dimensions. This thesis seeks to understand and tackle the challenges of recovering 3D information from an environment using vision alone. There is a well-established literature on the principles of doing this, and some impressive demonstrations; but this thesis explores the practicality of doing vision-based 3D reconstruction using multiple, mobile robotic platforms, the emphasis being on producing accurate 3D models. Typically, robotic platforms such as UAVs have a single on-board camera, restricting which method of visual 3D recovery can be employed. This thesis specifically explores Structure from Motion, a monocular 3D reconstruction technique which produces detailed and accurate, although slow to calculate, 3D reconstructions. It examines how well proof-of-concept demonstrations translate onto the kinds of robotic systems that are commonly deployed in the real world, where local processing is limited and network links have restricted capacity. In order to produce accurate 3D models, it is necessary to use high-resolution imagery, and the difficulties of working with this on remote robotic platforms is explored in some detail
