    Cost-driven framework for progressive compression of textured meshes

    International audienceRecent advances in digitization of geometry and radiometry generate in routine massive amounts of surface meshes with texture or color attributes. This large amount of data can be compressed using a progressive approach which provides at decoding low complexity levels of details (LoDs) that are continuously refined until retrieving the original model. The goal of such a progressive mesh compression algorithm is to improve the overall quality of the transmission for the user, by optimizing the rate-distortion trade-off. In this paper, we introduce a novel meaningful measure for the cost of a progressive transmission of a textured mesh by observing that the rate-distortion curve is in fact a staircase, which enables an effective comparison and optimization of progressive transmissions in the first place. We contribute a novel generic framework which utilizes the cost function to encode triangle surface meshes via multiplexing several geometry reduction steps (mesh decimation via half-edge or full-edge collapse operators, xyz quantization reduction and uv quantization reduction). This framework can also deal with textures by multiplexing an additional texture reduction step. We also design a texture atlas that enables us to preserve texture seams during decimation while not impairing the quality of resulting LODs. For encoding the inverse mesh decimation steps we further contribute a significant improvement over the state-of-the-art in terms of rate-distortion performance and yields a compression-rate of 22:1, on average. Finally, we propose a unique single-rate alternative solution using a selection scheme of a subset among LODs, optimized for our cost function, and provided with our atlas that enables interleaved progressive texture refinements

    No-Reference Quality Assessment for Colored Point Cloud and Mesh Based on Natural Scene Statistics

    To improve the viewer's quality of experience and optimize processing systems in computer graphics applications, the 3D quality assessment (3D-QA) has become an important task in the multimedia area. Point cloud and mesh are the two most widely used electronic representation formats of 3D models, the quality of which is quite sensitive to operations like simplification and compression. Therefore, many studies concerning point cloud quality assessment (PCQA) and mesh quality assessment (MQA) have been carried out to measure the visual quality degradations caused by lossy operations. However, a large part of previous studies utilizes full-reference (FR) metrics, which means they may fail to predict the accurate quality level of 3D models when the reference 3D model is not available. Furthermore, limited numbers of 3D-QA metrics are carried out to take color features into consideration, which significantly restricts the effectiveness and scope of application. In many quality assessment studies, natural scene statistics (NSS) have shown a good ability to quantify the distortion of natural scenes to statistical parameters. Therefore, we propose an NSS-based no-reference quality assessment metric for colored 3D models. In this paper, quality-aware features are extracted from the aspects of color and geometry directly from the 3D models. Then the statistic parameters are estimated using different distribution models to describe the characteristic of the 3D models. Our method is mainly validated on the colored point cloud quality assessment database (SJTU-PCQA) and the colored mesh quality assessment database (CMDM). The experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms all the state-of-art NR 3D-QA metrics and obtains an acceptable gap with the state-of-art FR 3D-QA metrics

    Subjective and objective assessment of 3D textured and non-textured Cultural Heritage Artefacts

    —The core mission of museums and cultural institutions is the preservation, study and presentation of cultural heritage content. As public expectation for more open access to information and innovative digital media increases, this is being met in cultural heritage with the creation of 3D digital artefacts using methods such as non-contact laser scanning. However, many issues need to be addressed including how the visual quality of presented dataset to the public affects their perceptual experience with the artefact. The results presented in this paper demonstrate the importance of the relationship between texture and polygonal resolution and how this can affect the perceived visual experience of a visitor. It also finds that there is an acceptable cost to texture and polygonal resolution to offer the best perceptual experience with 3D digital cultural heritage artefacts

Quality assessment metrics may allow a wide range of processes to be guided and evaluated, such as level of detail creation, compression, filtering and so on. Most computer graphics assets are composed of geometric surfaces on which several texture images can be mapped to make the rendering more realistic. While some quality assessment metrics exist for geometric surfaces, almost no research has been conducted on the evaluation of texture-mapped 3D models. In this context, we present a new subjective study to evaluate the perceptual quality of textured meshes, based on a paired comparison protocol. We introduce both texture and geometry distortions on a set of 5 reference models to produce a database of 136 distorted models, evaluated using two rendering protocols. Based on analysis of the results, we propose two new metrics for visual quality assessment of textured mesh, as optimized linear combinations of accurate geometry and texture quality measurements. These proposed perceptual metrics outperform their counterparts in terms of correlation with human opinion. The database, along with the associated subjective scores, will be made publicly available on-line

    The core mission of museums and cultural institutions is the preservation, study and presentation of cultural heritage content. In this technological age, the creation of digital datasets and archives has been widely adopted as one way of seeking to achieve some or all of these goals. However, there are many challenges with the use of these data, and in particular the large numbers of 3D digital artefacts that have been produced using methods such as non- contact laser scanning. As public expectation for more open access to information and innovative digital media increases, there are many issues that need to be rapidly addressed. The novel nature of 3D datasets and their visualisation presenting unique issues that impede use and dissemination. Key questions include the legal issues associated with 3D datasets created from cultural artefacts; the complex needs of users who are interacting with them; a lack of knowledge to texture and assess the visual quality of the datasets; and how the visual quality of the presented dataset relates to the perceptual experience of the user. This engineering doctorate, based on an industrial partnership with the National Museums of Liverpool and Conservation Technologies, investigates these questions and offers new ways of working with 3D cultural heritage datasets. The research outcomes in the thesis provide an improved understanding of the complexity of intellectual property law in relation to 3D cultural heritage datasets and how this impacts dissemination of these types of data. It also provides tools and techniques that can be used to understand the needs of a user when interacting with 3D cultural content. Additionally, the results demonstrate the importance of the relationship between texture and polygonal resolution and how this can affect the perceived visual experience of a visitor. It finds that there is an acceptable cost to texture and polygonal resolution to offer the best perceptual experience with 3D digital cultural heritage. The results also demonstrate that a non-textured mesh may be as highly received as a high resolution textured mesh. The research presented provides methodologies and guidelines to improve upon the dissemination and visualisation of 3D cultural content; enhancing and communicating the significance of their 3D collections to their physical and virtual visitors. Future opportunities and challenges for disseminating and visualising 3D cultural content are also discussed
