The British Geological Survey began developing digital field mapping systems in 1989. However, it was apparent that the commercially available hardware was not suitable at that time. In 2001, we revisited the topic under the System for Integrated Geoscience Mapping (SIGMA) programme. By 2003, BGS had developed a PDA (personal digital assistant) field system, which was superseded in 2005, when we began deploying a beta system on rugged Tablet PCs. The Tablet PC system, which we called BGS•SIGMAmobile was used by BGS in mapping projects across the UK as well as overseas. It first became available in Open Source form, in June 2009 via the BGS website, www.bgs.ac.uk, under an agreement which stipulates that updates and modifications must be supplied to BGS in order to stimulate further developments. In 2011/2012, BGS•SIGMAmobile was rewritten in .NET and combined with our office based mapping software BGS•SIGMAdesktop within ArcGIS 10.x to create BGS•SIGMA 2012. It is envisaged that future releases will be made available from the BGS website incorporating new modules, modifications and upgrades supplied by BGS and external users of the system. This document has been written to guide users through the installation and use of BGS•SIGMA 2012 (mobile and desktop), which is the third free release. We are happy to receive feedback and modifications emailed to [email protected]

In this project the subject of Industrial Design from the bachelor’s degree in Industrial Technologies and Economic Analysis of the ETSEIB is reviewed considering the contents and the teaching and evaluating methods. To acquire a great level and teach the subject with great quality, this project has been developed in order to grant that some of the best methods are used to teach and evaluate the students. The contents have also been reviewed to certify that a similar structure of contents is being followed the same way as some of the more relevant engineering schools. As this subject is part of the bachelor’s degree in Industrial Technologies and Economic Analysis, some of the subjects of the bachelor’s degree in Industrial Technologies, which is another degree from the ETSEIB, are used to compare and conclude the methods that could be used to benefit the subject. This has been done since these subjects have been used as a background to develop the contents and the organization of the Industrial Design subject. Research on some of the most relevant engineering schools in the world and in similar subjects such as Graphical Expression or Computer Aided Design has been done. This has determined the differences between the relevant and prestigious schools and the subjects of Graphical Expression or CAD. Once these different methods have been identified, they are considered to be applied to the organization of the subject, as a proposal, in order to enhance its quality and its reputation. To define which universities are better and more adequate for this project, some crucial facts have been used to reduce the research to a more specific group of engineering schools. The idea behind this project is to be able to clarify and help achieving a greater quality in the subject by reviewing some of the most relevant industrial design schools worldwide to apply some of the ways that they use to achieve such quality and reputation

Jakob Leupold’s Imaginary Automatic Anamorphic Devices of 1713

In 1713 the scientific instrument-maker Jakob Leupold published designs for three machines were the first attempt to design machinery with internal moving parts that replaced human agency in creating original images. This paper first analyzes his text and engravings in order to explain how he proposed to do this, given contemporary materials and command of physical forces. Next, it characterizes the devices as a transition from concepts of incision to concepts of mirroring, taken as models of the history of mechanical reproduction. And finally, Leupold’s replacement of the sighting grid with differential gears points to a set of problems appearing in contemporary philosophy represented in Rococo artistic production of this period as well. Taking the proposed devices in context, they help to theorize the complex notions of creative activity in Rococo visual culture. Taken as an episode in the history of communications, they instance the development of conceptions of personhood and of physical forces at stake in the invention of automated media

Plagiarism Issues in Post-1998 Indonesian Film Posters

There are online articles, with visual materials, stating that some post-1998 Indonesian film posters were accused as plagiarism by common people. However, academically speaking, it needs deeper skills and knowledge to prove acts of plagiarism. This paper will discuss the issues around Indonesian film posters and plagiarism, including the possibility of citing in graphic design. The research will treat film posters not only as marketing tools to promote the movies, as many people consider, but also as graphic design materials. Some terms such as appropriation, homage, and pastiche will be discussed to analyze the phenomenon

Dynamic Trace-Based Data Dependency Analysis for Parallelization of C Programs

    Get PDF
Writing parallel code is traditionally considered a difficult task, even when it is tackled from the beginning of a project. In this paper, we demonstrate an innovative toolset that faces this challenge directly. It provides the software developers with profile data and directs them to possible top-level, pipeline-style parallelization opportunities for an arbitrary sequential C program. This approach is complementary to the methods based on static code analysis and automatic code rewriting and does not impose restrictions on the structure of the sequential code or the parallelization style, even though it is mostly aimed at coarse-grained task-level parallelization. The proposed toolset has been utilized to define parallel code organizations for a number of real-world representative applications and is based on and is provided as free source
