IP TRACEBACK Scenarios
Internet Protocol (IP) trace back is the enabling technology to control Internet crime. In this paper, we present novel and practical IP traceback systems which provide a defense system with the ability to find out the real sources of attacking packets that traverse through the network. IP traceback is to find the origin of an IP packet on the Internet without relying on the source IP address field. Due to the trusting nature of the IP protocol, the source IP address of a packet is not authenticated. As a result, the source address in an IP packet can be falsified (IP address spoofing). Spoof IP packets can be used for different attacks. The problem of finding the source of a packet is called the IP traceback problem. IP Traceback is a critical ability for identifying sources of attacks and instituting protection measures for the Internet. Most existing approaches to this problem have been tailored toward DDoS attack detection
Distributed reflection denial of service attack: A critical review
As the world becomes increasingly connected and the number of users grows exponentially and āthingsā go online, the prospect of cyberspace becoming a significant target for cybercriminals is a reality. Any host or device that is exposed on the internet is a prime target for cyberattacks. A denial-of-service (DoS) attack is accountable for the majority of these cyberattacks. Although various solutions have been proposed by researchers to mitigate this issue, cybercriminals always adapt their attack approach to circumvent countermeasures. One of the modified DoS attacks is known as distributed reflection denial-of-service attack (DRDoS). This type of attack is considered to be a more severe variant of the DoS attack and can be conducted in transmission control protocol (TCP) and user datagram protocol (UDP). However, this attack is not effective in the TCP protocol due to the three-way handshake approach that prevents this type of attack from passing through the network layer to the upper layers in the network stack. On the other hand, UDP is a connectionless protocol, so most of these DRDoS attacks pass through UDP. This study aims to examine and identify the differences between TCP-based and UDP-based DRDoS attacks
A Study on Sanctuary and Seclusion Issues in Internet-of-Things
Internet-of-Things (IoT) are everywhere in our daily life. They are used in our homes, in hospitals, deployed outside to control and report the changes in environment, prevent fires, and many more beneficial functionality. However, all those benefits can come of huge risks of seclusion loss and sanctuary issues. To secure the IoT devices, many research works have been con-ducted to countermeasure those problems and find a better way to eliminate those risks, or at least minimize their effects on the userļæ½s seclusion and sanctuary requirements. The study consists of four segments. The first segment will explore the most relevant limitations of IoT devices and their solutions. The second one will present the classification of IoT attacks. The next segment will focus on the mechanisms and architectures for authentication and access control. The last segment will analyze the sanctuary issues in different layers
A Comprehensive Survey on Exiting Solution Approaches towards Security and Privacy Requirements of IoT
āInternet of Things (IoT)āemerged as an intelligent collaborative computation and communication between a set of objects capable of providing on-demand services to other objects anytime anywhere. A large-scale deployment of data-driven cloud applications as well as automated physical things such as embed electronics, software, sensors and network connectivity enables a joint ubiquitous and pervasive internet-based computing systems well capable of interacting with each other in an IoT. IoT, a well-known term and a growing trend in IT arena certainly bring a highly connected global network structure providing a lot of beneficial aspects to a user regarding business productivity, lifestyle improvement, government efficiency, etc. It also generates enormous heterogeneous and homogeneous data needed to be analyzed properly to get insight into valuable information. However, adoption of this new reality (i.e., IoT) by integrating it with the internet invites a certain challenges from security and privacy perspective. At present, a much effort has been put towards strengthening the security system in IoT still not yet found optimal solutions towards current security flaws. Therefore, the prime aim of this study is to investigate the qualitative aspects of the conventional security solution approaches in IoT. It also extracts some open research problems that could affect the future research track of IoT arena
Botnet-based Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) Attacks on Web Servers: Classification and Art
Botnets are prevailing mechanisms for the facilitation of the distributed
denial of service (DDoS) attacks on computer networks or applications.
Currently, Botnet-based DDoS attacks on the application layer are latest and
most problematic trends in network security threats. Botnet-based DDoS attacks
on the application layer limits resources, curtails revenue, and yields
customer dissatisfaction, among others. DDoS attacks are among the most
difficult problems to resolve online, especially, when the target is the Web
server. In this paper, we present a comprehensive study to show the danger of
Botnet-based DDoS attacks on application layer, especially on the Web server
and the increased incidents of such attacks that has evidently increased
recently. Botnet-based DDoS attacks incidents and revenue losses of famous
companies and government websites are also described. This provides better
understanding of the problem, current solution space, and future research scope
to defend against such attacks efficiently
