They are tested in case of a forest fire in Namie town in 2017, where is radioactive contaminated area. 137Cs dust is observed there, and the re-diffusion is found

    The Development of a Health, Safety and Environment Management System for an Integrated Gender Separated Campus in the Middle East Region – A Case Study

    In recent years, concerns regarding health, safety, and environmental issues increased. This led to the development of integrated Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Management Systems in many organizations, including universities. The study of the current HSE management system of the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) has been conducted as a typical National university in the Middle East Region with the added unique feature of a large integrated campus with gender separation. Emphasis has been given to the E-shared laboratories of the UAEU as the interface between the two sides (male/female) of the campus. The E-shared laboratories incorporate most of the teaching laboratories of the Colleges Food and Agriculture, Engineering and Science, and it is here that most of the chemicals and biological samples of the university can be found. At the same time, the E-shared laboratories present a physical bottleneck in the movement between campuses, also in emergency situations. Spatial Analysis has been conducted to model crowd behavior in the E4-shared laboratories building in emergency situations. In addition, about environmental concerns within the health and safety infrastructure, the waste treatment with silica gel and recycling of silica gel in educational and small research laboratories has been studied

    These proceedings cover the sixth alumni conference of the International Space University, coordinated by the ISU U.S. Alumni Organization, which was held at Rice University in Houston, Texas, on July 11, 1997. The alumni conference gives graduates of the International Space University's interdisciplinary, international, and intercultural program a forum in which they may present and exchange technical ideas, and keep abreast of the wide variety of work in which the ever-growing body of alumni is engaged. The diversity that is characteristic of ISU is reflected in the subject matter of the papers published in this proceedings. This proceedings preserves the order of the alumni presentations given at the 1997 ISU Alumni Conference. As in previous years, a special effort was made to solicit papers with a strong connection to the two ISU 1997 Summer Session Program design projects: (1) Transfer of Technology, Spin-Offs, Spin-Ins; and (2) Strategies for the Exploration of Mars.     Keeping in Reserve: Rethinking Earth Crises through Acts and Architectures of Reservation

    This thesis concerns architecture and engages with redefining architecture in terms of its relation to acts and structures of reservation, both posited as causes of, and as solutions to Earth crises – i.e crises related to human-induced threats to, or arising from, the planetary environment. Here, what is meant by “reservation” is the production of (and the) arrangements to secure and keep apart – i.e. in reserve/s – things perceived as threatening to humanity or vital to its survival. In addition, the term here refers to another aspect of reservation - the expression of doubt regarding the efficacy of such arrangements. This thesis contends that, despite being intended to act as architectural solutions, agents or safeguards for the future and safety of (human) life on the planet, by failing to respect the inescapably interconnected nature of the environment and the reciprocity of its processes - their extensive, cumulative and temporal qualities – reserve arrangements exacerbate rather than lessen the problems they set out to address. These assimilate the very structure and pattern of crises they attempt to resolve, and keep morphologically reproducing the ill effects of threats - thus, not only exposing architecture and the reserve fragile limits but, ultimately, cementing them as fictions. This argument is made in relation to attempts to guard and defend against three categories of threat from Earth crises: destruction and danger; depletion of natural and artificial resources; contamination and pollution. These are read through ‘voiced reservations’ from the fields of Arts, critical theory, Earth (and social) sciences, radical ecology, speculative philosophy, cultural studies, architectural theory and even science fiction, which offer theoretical means to reflect on general laws of acting upon the planet and in relation to the future. Problematising the construction of the planet through the logic of the reserve, this thesis calls for new methodological engagements
