    Improving the system capacity of broadband services using multiple high-altitude platforms

    A method of significantly improving the capacity of high-altitude platform (HAP) communications networks operating in the millimeter-wave bands is presented. It is shown how constellations of HAPs can share a common frequency allocation by exploiting the directionality of the user antenna. The system capacity of such constellations is critically affected by the minimum angular separation of the HAPs and the sidelobe level of the user antenna. For typical antenna beamwidths of approximately 5/spl deg/ an inter-HAP spacing of 4 km is sufficient to deliver optimum performance. The aggregate bandwidth efficiency is evaluated, both theoretically using the Shannon equation, and using practical modulation and coding schemes, for multiple HAP configurations delivering either single or multiple cells. For the user antenna beamwidths used, it is shown that capacity increases are commensurate with the increase in the number of platforms, up to 10 HAPs. For increases beyond this the choice of constellation strategy becomes increasingly important

    STOL Simulation Requirements for Development of Integrated Flight/propulsion Control Systems

    The role and use of simulation as a design tool in developing integrated systems where design criteria is largely unavailable is well known. This paper addresses additional simulation needs for the development of Integrated Flight/Propulsion Control Systems (IFPCS) which will improve the probability of properly interpreting simulation results. These needs are based on recent experience with power approach flying qualities evaluations of an advanced fighter configuration which incorporated Short Takeoff and Landing (STOL) technologies and earlier experiences with power approach flying qualities evaluations on the AFTI/F-16 program. The use of motion base platforms with axial and normal degrees of freedom will help in evaluating pilot coupling and workload in the presence of high frequency low amplitude axial accelerations produced by high bandwidth airspeed controllers in a gusty environment

    A Survey of Air-to-Ground Propagation Channel Modeling for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

    In recent years, there has been a dramatic increase in the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), particularly for small UAVs, due to their affordable prices, ease of availability, and ease of operability. Existing and future applications of UAVs include remote surveillance and monitoring, relief operations, package delivery, and communication backhaul infrastructure. Additionally, UAVs are envisioned as an important component of 5G wireless technology and beyond. The unique application scenarios for UAVs necessitate accurate air-to-ground (AG) propagation channel models for designing and evaluating UAV communication links for control/non-payload as well as payload data transmissions. These AG propagation models have not been investigated in detail when compared to terrestrial propagation models. In this paper, a comprehensive survey is provided on available AG channel measurement campaigns, large and small scale fading channel models, their limitations, and future research directions for UAV communication scenarios

    NOSS/ALDCS analysis and system requirements definition

    The results of system analyses and implementation studies of an advanced location and data collection system (ALDCS) , proposed for inclusion on the National Oceanic Satellite System (NOSS) spacecraft are reported. The system applies Doppler processing and radiofrequency interferometer position location technqiues both alone and in combination. Aspects analyzed include: the constraints imposed by random access to the system by platforms, the RF link parameters, geometric concepts of position and velocity estimation by the two techniques considered, and the effects of electrical measurement errors, spacecraft attitude errors, and geometric parameters on estimation accuracy. Hardware techniques and trade-offs for interferometric phase measurement, ambiguity resolution and calibration are considered. A combined Doppler-interferometer ALDCS intended to fulfill the NOSS data validation and oceanic research support mission is also described

    Definition and Preliminary Design of the Laser Atmospheric Wind Sounder (LAWS) Phase 1. Volume 1: Executive Summary

    The laser atmospheric wind sounder (LAWS) is a facility instrument of the Earth Observing System (EOS) and is the culmination of over 20 years of effort in the field of laser Doppler wind sensing. LAWS will by the first instrument to fly in space with the capability of providing global-scale tropospheric wind profiles at high spatial resolutions. Global-scale wind profiles are necessary for: (1) more accurate diagnostics of large-scale circulation and climate dynamics; (2) improved numerical weather prediction; (3) improved understanding of mesoscale systems; (4) improved understanding of global biogeochemical and hydrologic cycles. The objective of phase 1 of the LAWS study was to evaluate competing concepts and develop a baseline configuration for the LAWS instrument. The first phase of the study consisted of identifying realistic concepts for LAWS and analyzing them in sufficient detail to be able to choose the most promising one for the LAWS application. System configurations were then developed for the chosen concept. The concept and subsequent configuration were to be compatible with two prospective platforms: the Japanese polar orbiting platform (JPOP) and the Space Station Freedom (as an attached payload). After an objective and comprehensive concept selection process, a heterodyne detection Doppler lidar using a CO2 laser transmitter operating at 9.1 microns over a 2.1 micron system with a solid state laser was chosen. The CO2 lidar concept was then analyzed in detail to arrive at a configuration for the instrument and its major subsystems. A configuration for LAWS was arrived at which meets the performance requirements, and this design is presented

    The Coverage, Capacity and Coexistence of Mixed High Altitude Platform and Terrestrial Segments

    This thesis explores the coverage, capacity and coexistence of High Altitude Platform (HAP) and terrestrial segments in the same service area. Given the limited spectrum available, mechanisms to manage the co-channel interference to enable effective coexistence between the two infrastructures are examined. Interference arising from the HAP, caused by the relatively high transmit power and the antenna beam profile, has the potential to significantly affect the existing terrestrial system on the ground if the HAP beams are deployed without a proper strategy. Beam-pointing strategies exploiting phased array antennas on the HAPs are shown to be an effective way to place the beams, with each of them forming service cells onto the ground in the service area, especially dense user areas. Using a newly developed RF clustering technique to better point the cells over an area of a dense group of users, it is shown that near maximum coverage of 96% of the population over the service area can be provided while maintaining the coexistence with the existing terrestrial system. To improve the user experience at the cell edge, while at the same time improving the overall capacity of the system, Joint Transmission – Coordinated Multipoint (JT-CoMP) is adapted for a HAP architecture. It is shown how the HAP can potentially enable the tight scheduling needed to perform JT-CoMP due to the centralisation of all virtual E-UTRAN Node Bs (eNodeBs) on the HAP. A trade-off between CINR gain and loss of capacity when adapting JT-CoMP into the HAP system is identified, and strategies to minimise the trade-off are considered. It is shown that 57% of the users benefit from the JT-CoMP. In order to enable coordination between the HAP and terrestrial segments, a joint architecture based on a Cloud – Radio Access Network (C-RAN) system is introduced. Apart from adapting a C-RAN based system to centrally connect the two segments together, the network functional split which varies the degree of the centralised processing is also considered to deal with the limitations of HAP fronthaul link requirements. Based on the fronthaul link requirements acquired from the different splitting options, the ground relay station diversity to connect the HAP to centralised and distributed units (CUs and DUs) is also considered

    Adaptive multibeam antennas for spacelab. Phase A: Feasibility study

    The feasibility was studied of using adaptive multibeam multi-frequency antennas on the spacelab, and to define the experiment configuration and program plan needed for a demonstration to prove the concept. Three applications missions were selected, and requirements were defined for an L band communications experiment, an L band radiometer experiment, and a Ku band communications experiment. Reflector, passive lens, and phased array antenna systems were considered, and the Adaptive Multibeam Phased Array (AMPA) was chosen. Array configuration and beamforming network tradeoffs resulted in a single 3m x 3m L band array with 576 elements for high radiometer beam efficiency. Separate 0.4m x 0.4 m arrays are used to transmit and receive at Ku band with either 576 elements or thinned apertures. Each array has two independently steerable 5 deg beams, which are adaptively controlled
