    Systematic Review of the Literature on Black and Minority Ethnic Communities in Sport and Physical Recreation

    The Carnegie Research Institute was commissioned by Sporting Equals and the Sports Councils to conduct an independent systematic review of the literature on participation in sport and recreation by Black and minority ethnic (BME) communities. The brief was to focus on UK material from the past ten years, to compile an electronic, bibliographic database and use that evidence to assess the policy significance of existing knowledge in the drive to widen and increase participation. Although the field might still be considered under-researched over 300 items were identified. Judgements were made on the quality of the research on the basis of the methodological and theoretical soundness and the credibility of the link between the conclusions and the data. The various items were collated in an electronic, bibliographic database and coded as: substantive research of good quality; related public statistics and policy documents; and other related materials of interest. The research, policy and practice contained in this body of work is set within an expanding national and international framework of policy and legislation concerned with human rights and principles of equality. The Sports Councils and Sporting Equals have played a significant part in this through initiatives like the Equality Standard. They have not been acting in isolation, but have received support from other sports bodies with initiatives both to challenge discrimination and inequality and to promote participation and inclusion. Nonetheless, there still seems to be a measure of disconnection between research, sports policies and equality policies. Indeed, sports policies are sometimes based on limited representations of racism and so are inhibited in the way they address racial equality

    Colonialism, christians and sport : the catholic church and football in Goa, 1883-1951

    The chapter uses the development of football in Goa, the Portuguese colony in India until 1961, as a case study with which to critique existing histories of sport and colonialism. The start point of the article is that when taken together existing studies of football in particular, and to an extent sport in general, in colonial contexts bear a range of similarities. Broadly speaking a model can be drawn from them, one in which Christian missionary activity and colonial government projects act to introduce and encourage western sports among colonised populations who then eventually adopt and adapt the games. The Goa example offers a fresh perspective as it argues that while elements of the story of football there are familiar from these other studies, the role of indigenous agents in propagating the game at its earliest stages is crucial to understanding how the sport took off and became embedded in local society and culture

    More than a Market? The Regulation of Sport in the European Union

    The explanatory capacity of ideas has been contested on two grounds. First, ideas have been dismissed as epiphenomenal. Second, ideational explanations have been criticized for limited importance that they ascribe to agency. This article examines the involvement of the European Commission in previously unchartered territory, namely the regulation of professional sport in Europe. It demonstrates that in conditions of ambiguity and uncertainty created by the need to implement broad Treaty-based principles in new areas of socio-economic activity, ideas, first, act as road maps that direct the executive activity of the European Commission, legitimize it, and set limits to it by identifying the relevant deeply embedded conceptions of the nature of a given activity and by linking them to a wider, historically defined normative order. Second, ideas are also powerful political weapons used by political actors in their quest to advance their interests

It includes different aspects like food & beverage, apparel, sponsorship, licensing, events, tourism, and infrastructure (ATKearney, 2011). In North America this industry is one of the most important in terms of creating a positive impact to the economy, increasing surprisingly fast the GDP of the United States and Canada.     How to optimize the sport-study in Geneva for team sports, taking as a benchmark the educational system of different football academies in Europe ?

    Today, in Geneva (and in Switzerland), practicing a sport at a professional level, and continuing the studies, is something difficult to combine. Not all the young athletes, playing in an Elite Team, have the possibility to follow an adaptable sport-study program. The main problem that the sport-study is currently encountering is a question of budget. That’s why only the young athletes with a “Swiss Olympic Talent Card” can accede to the post-mandatory school in the sport study program. However it is interesting to see that in Geneva (during the year 2012-2013), 732 young athletes had a Swiss Olympic Talent Card. Out of these 732 young people, 79 are enrolled in a secondary school in the sport study program, and 77 in the post-mandatory, which represent 21% of all the holders of the Swiss Olympic Talent Card. What are the other 79% doing? In order to compare the different educational system within sport organization it is easier to take into account only one specific sport. In this thesis, football will be the benchmark. Football is the most popular and accessible sport. Even if Switzerland does not have the most followed Championship, the country is one of the best in terms of promoting new generations of players and has a high potential of young talents. Between 28% and 36% of the players in the Swiss Championships (Super League and Challenge League) are under 21 years old. These numbers demonstrate the quality of the football development in Switzerland. However too many young players are quitting school because of a lack of measures that would enable them to combine their sport with their studies. The question this thesis will try to answer is how to optimize the sport-study in Geneva for team sports in order to enable the young athletes to combine their passion, and their future reconversion. This thesis will concentrate on three football academies in Europe: Crystal Palace FC in England, The Olympique Lyonnais in France, and Servette FC in Switzerland. The goal is to analyse what and how things are done abroad, and to give recommendations to improve the current measures in Geneva

    SmokeFree Sports Project Report

    Children and young people are amongst the most vulnerable groups in society and are highly susceptible to smoking experimentation and addiction. In Liverpool, smoking prevalence is significantly higher than the UK average. Therefore early intervention strategies are required for smoking prevention and cessation. Research has found a negative association between smoking and physical activity. SmokeFree Sports aims to explore whether physical activity and sport can be used to promote the smoke free message to children and young people. SmokeFree Sports is an innovative multi-dimensional campaign that incorporates social-marketing strategies alongside the provision of sports and physical activities to: a) de-normalise smoking among youth b) empower youth to stay smoke free, and c) increase awareness of the dangers of smoking using positive messaging through the medium of sport and physical activity. This project is delivered across Liverpool and aims to reduce the prevalence of smoking and prevent the uptake of smoking in children and young people. The initiative, which is managed by Liverpool John Moores University in partnership with Liverpool PCT, employs a variety of strategies to promote and deliver the smoke free message to children and young people including a) training sports coaches and teachers to deliver the smoke free message, b) delivering SFS messages in schools and youth clubs through sport and physical activity, c) asking children to sign a pledge to be smoke free, d) support voluntary sports clubs to adopt a smoke free policy on their playing fields, e) encouraging organizations and individuals interested in health and sport to sign up to the SmokeFree Sports Charter and f) signposting children to smoking cessation services
