People-Powered Music: Using User-Generated Tags and Structure in Recommendations
Music recommenders often rely on experts to classify song facets like genre and mood, but user-generated folksonomies hold some advantages over expert classifications—folksonomies can reflect the same real-world vocabularies and categorizations that end users employ. We present an approach for using crowd-sourced common sense knowledge to structure user-generated music tags into a folksonomy, and describe how to use this approach to make music recommendations. We then empirically evaluate our “people-powered” structured content recommender against a more traditional recommender. Our results show that participants slightly preferred the unstructured recommender, rating more of its recommendations as “perfect” than they did for our approach. An exploration of the reasons behind participants’ ratings revealed that users behaved differently when tagging songs than when evaluating recommendations, and we discuss the implications of our results for future tagging and recommendation approaches
Artequakt: Generating tailored biographies from automatically annotated fragments from the web
The Artequakt project seeks to automatically generate narrativebiographies of artists from knowledge that has been extracted from the Web and maintained in a knowledge base. An overview of the system architecture is presented here and the three key components of that architecture are explained in detail, namely knowledge extraction, information management and biography construction. Conclusions are drawn from the initial experiences of the project and future progress is detailed
Analytic frameworks for assessing dialogic argumentation in online learning environments
Over the last decade, researchers have developed sophisticated online learning environments to support students engaging in argumentation. This review first considers the range of functionalities incorporated within these online environments. The review then presents five categories of analytic frameworks focusing on (1) formal argumentation structure, (2) normative quality, (3) nature and function of contributions within the dialog, (4) epistemic nature of reasoning, and (5) patterns and trajectories of participant interaction. Example analytic frameworks from each category are presented in detail rich enough to illustrate their nature and structure. This rich detail is intended to facilitate researchers’ identification of possible frameworks to draw upon in developing or adopting analytic methods for their own work. Each framework is applied to a shared segment of student dialog to facilitate this illustration and comparison process. Synthetic discussions of each category consider the frameworks in light of the underlying theoretical perspectives on argumentation, pedagogical goals, and online environmental structures. Ultimately the review underscores the diversity of perspectives represented in this research, the importance of clearly specifying theoretical and environmental commitments throughout the process of developing or adopting an analytic framework, and the role of analytic frameworks in the future development of online learning environments for argumentation
Executive functions in insight versus non-insight problem solving: an individual differences approach

Eighteen insight tasks, 10 non-insight tasks and measures of individual differences in working memory capacities, switching and inhibition were administered to 120 participants. Performance on insight problems was not linked with executive functions of inhibition or switching but was linked positively to measures of verbal and visuo-spatial working memory capacities. Non-insight task performance was positively linked to the executive function of switching (but not to inhibition) and to verbal and visuo-spatial working memory capacities. These patterns regarding executive functions were maintained when the insight and non-insight composites were split into verbal and spatial insight and non-insight composite scores. The results are discussed in relation to dual processing accounts of thinking.Peer reviewe
Structuring Wikipedia Articles with Section Recommendations
Sections are the building blocks of Wikipedia articles. They enhance
readability and can be used as a structured entry point for creating and
expanding articles. Structuring a new or already existing Wikipedia article
with sections is a hard task for humans, especially for newcomers or less
experienced editors, as it requires significant knowledge about how a
well-written article looks for each possible topic. Inspired by this need, the
present paper defines the problem of section recommendation for Wikipedia
articles and proposes several approaches for tackling it. Our systems can help
editors by recommending what sections to add to already existing or newly
created Wikipedia articles. Our basic paradigm is to generate recommendations
by sourcing sections from articles that are similar to the input article. We
explore several ways of defining similarity for this purpose (based on topic
modeling, collaborative filtering, and Wikipedia's category system). We use
both automatic and human evaluation approaches for assessing the performance of
our recommendation system, concluding that the category-based approach works
best, achieving precision@10 of about 80% in the human evaluation.Comment: SIGIR '18 camera-read
Identifying Web Tables - Supporting a Neglected Type of Content on the Web
The abundance of the data in the Internet facilitates the improvement of
extraction and processing tools. The trend in the open data publishing
encourages the adoption of structured formats like CSV and RDF. However, there
is still a plethora of unstructured data on the Web which we assume contain
semantics. For this reason, we propose an approach to derive semantics from web
tables which are still the most popular publishing tool on the Web. The paper
also discusses methods and services of unstructured data extraction and
processing as well as machine learning techniques to enhance such a workflow.
The eventual result is a framework to process, publish and visualize linked
open data. The software enables tables extraction from various open data
sources in the HTML format and an automatic export to the RDF format making the
data linked. The paper also gives the evaluation of machine learning techniques
in conjunction with string similarity functions to be applied in a tables

Survey of the State of the Art in Natural Language Generation: Core tasks, applications and evaluation
This paper surveys the current state of the art in Natural Language
Generation (NLG), defined as the task of generating text or speech from
non-linguistic input. A survey of NLG is timely in view of the changes that the
field has undergone over the past decade or so, especially in relation to new
(usually data-driven) methods, as well as new applications of NLG technology.
This survey therefore aims to (a) give an up-to-date synthesis of research on
the core tasks in NLG and the architectures adopted in which such tasks are
organised; (b) highlight a number of relatively recent research topics that
have arisen partly as a result of growing synergies between NLG and other areas
of artificial intelligence; (c) draw attention to the challenges in NLG
evaluation, relating them to similar challenges faced in other areas of Natural
Language Processing, with an emphasis on different evaluation methods and the
