    Beam connector apparatus and assembly

    An apparatus and assembly for connecting beams and like structural members is disclosed which is particularly advantageous for connecting two members which are moved laterally into place. The connector apparatus requires no relative longitudinal movement between the ends of the beams or members being connected to make a connection joint. The apparatus includes a receptacle member and a connector housing carried by opposed ends of the structural member being connected. A spring-loaded connector member is carried by the connector housing which may be released for extension and engagement into the receptacle member

    The intersection of decreasing resource size and increasing population and its associated demand creates a pressing need to develop products that act as alternatives to solid sawn lumber. Engineered composite lumber is one such alternative. The product described herein utilizes a modified form of sawn lumber as the raw material. The objective of this research was to manufacture, mechanically test, and evaluate a novel type of engineered lumber. Non destructive evaluation of raw materials and finished beams, and final mechanical testing to determine mean strength and stiffness values as per ASTM 5456 were used. The mechanical property data was converted into design values for fiber stress in bending (Fb) and stiffness (MOE). These design values was compared to those published by the U.S. (NDS) for wood construction. Pine logs were reduced into cants and further processed into matched symmetrical trapezoids. Symmetrical trapezoids were then non-destructively evaluated via E-computer and Director, and sorted by results. Next, the sorted trapezoids were matched into pairs and assembled into bowtie beams. Polyvinyl acetate adhesive was used throughout. Stiffness of the manufactured beams was nondestructively evaluated too. Then the beams were mechanically tested. The information from the E-computer was correlated to the strength and stiffness for each beam. The design strength and stiffness was compared to the values of sections of equivalent depth and maximum width as shown in the NDS. Also, non destructive test values were compared and correlated to those from the destructive tests. Finally, the design strength and stiffness values were respectively multiplied by the sectional area or the moment of inertia. This produced a strength efficiency factor and a stiffness efficiency factor. These factors were compared to factors derived from multiplying the design strength or design stiffness values (from the NDS) times the area or the moment of inertia of a rectangular section of equivalent depth and maximum width. It is found that the mechanically efficient bowtie section produced an increased strength and stiffness efficiency as compared to that of solid sawn material

    A review of current development in natural fiber composites for structural and infrastructure applications

    Natural fiber composites (NFC) as the name implies is made of natural resources thus possesses environmentally beneficial properties such as biodegradability. With its natural characteristics, NFC is obtaining more attention in recent years in various application including automotive, merchandise, structural and infrastructure. Several studies have shown that NFC can be developed into a load-bearing structural member for applications in structural and infrastructure application. As an engineered material, similar with synthetic fiber composites, the properties of NFC can be tailored to meet certain requirements. The challenge in working with NFC is the large variation in properties and characteristics. The properties of NFC to a large extent influenced by the type of fibers, environmental condition where the plant fibers are sourced and the type of fiber treatments. However, with their unique and wide range of variability, natural fiber composites could emerge as a new alternative engineering material which can substitute the use of synthetic fiber composites

    Synchronously deployable double fold beam and planar truss structure

    A deployable structure that synchronously deploys in both length and width is disclosed which is suitable for use as a structural component for orbiting space stations or large satellites. The structure is designed with maximum packing efficiency so that large structures may be collapsed and transported in the cargo bay of the Space Shuttle. The synchronous deployment feature allows the structure to be easily deployed in space by two astronauts, without a complex deployment mechanism. The structure is made up of interconnected structural units, each generally in the shape of a parallelepiped. The structural units are constructed of structural members connected with hinged and fixed connections at connection nodes in each corner of the parallelepiped. Diagonal members along each face of the parallelepiped provide structural rigidity and are equipped with mid-length, self-locking hinges to allow the structure to collapse. The structure is designed so that all hinged connections may be made with simple clevis-type hinges requiring only a single degree of freedom, and each hinge pin is located along the centerline of its structural member for increased strength and stiffness
