Log-based Evaluation of Label Splits for Process Models
Process mining techniques aim to extract insights in processes from event
logs. One of the challenges in process mining is identifying interesting and
meaningful event labels that contribute to a better understanding of the
process. Our application area is mining data from smart homes for elderly,
where the ultimate goal is to signal deviations from usual behavior and provide
timely recommendations in order to extend the period of independent living.
Extracting individual process models showing user behavior is an important
instrument in achieving this goal. However, the interpretation of sensor data
at an appropriate abstraction level is not straightforward. For example, a
motion sensor in a bedroom can be triggered by tossing and turning in bed or by
getting up. We try to derive the actual activity depending on the context
(time, previous events, etc.). In this paper we introduce the notion of label
refinements, which links more abstract event descriptions with their more
refined counterparts. We present a statistical evaluation method to determine
the usefulness of a label refinement for a given event log from a process
perspective. Based on data from smart homes, we show how our statistical
evaluation method for label refinements can be used in practice. Our method was
able to select two label refinements out of a set of candidate label
refinements that both had a positive effect on model precision.Comment: Paper accepted at the 20th International Conference on

Active learning in annotating micro-blogs dealing with e-reputation
Elections unleash strong political views on Twitter, but what do people
really think about politics? Opinion and trend mining on micro blogs dealing
with politics has recently attracted researchers in several fields including
Information Retrieval and Machine Learning (ML). Since the performance of ML
and Natural Language Processing (NLP) approaches are limited by the amount and
quality of data available, one promising alternative for some tasks is the
automatic propagation of expert annotations. This paper intends to develop a
so-called active learning process for automatically annotating French language
tweets that deal with the image (i.e., representation, web reputation) of
politicians. Our main focus is on the methodology followed to build an original
annotated dataset expressing opinion from two French politicians over time. We
therefore review state of the art NLP-based ML algorithms to automatically
annotate tweets using a manual initiation step as bootstrap. This paper focuses
on key issues about active learning while building a large annotated data set
from noise. This will be introduced by human annotators, abundance of data and
the label distribution across data and entities. In turn, we show that Twitter
characteristics such as the author's name or hashtags can be considered as the
bearing point to not only improve automatic systems for Opinion Mining (OM) and
Topic Classification but also to reduce noise in human annotations. However, a
later thorough analysis shows that reducing noise might induce the loss of

Passively mode-locked laser using an entirely centred erbium-doped fiber
This paper describes the setup and experimental results for an entirely centred erbium-doped fiber laser with passively mode-locked output. The gain medium of the ring laser cavity configuration comprises a 3 m length of two-core optical fiber, wherein an undoped outer core region of 9.38 μm diameter surrounds a 4.00 μm diameter central core region doped with erbium ions at 400 ppm concentration. The generated stable soliton mode-locking output has a central wavelength of 1533 nm and pulses that yield an average output power of 0.33 mW with a pulse energy of 31.8 pJ. The pulse duration is 0.7 ps and the measured output repetition rate of 10.37 MHz corresponds to a 96.4 ns pulse spacing in the pulse train
Finding Statistically Significant Interactions between Continuous Features
The search for higher-order feature interactions that are statistically
significantly associated with a class variable is of high relevance in fields
such as Genetics or Healthcare, but the combinatorial explosion of the
candidate space makes this problem extremely challenging in terms of
computational efficiency and proper correction for multiple testing. While
recent progress has been made regarding this challenge for binary features, we
here present the first solution for continuous features. We propose an
algorithm which overcomes the combinatorial explosion of the search space of
higher-order interactions by deriving a lower bound on the p-value for each
interaction, which enables us to massively prune interactions that can never
reach significance and to thereby gain more statistical power. In our
experiments, our approach efficiently detects all significant interactions in a

Identifying e-Commerce in Enterprises by means of Text Mining and Classification Algorithms
Monitoring specific features of the enterprises, for example, the adoption of e-commerce, is an important and basic task for several economic activities. This type of information is usually obtained by means of surveys, which are costly due to the amount of personnel involved in the task. An automatic detection of this information would allow consistent savings. This can actually be performed by relying on computer engineering, since in general this information is publicly available on-line through the corporate websites. This work describes how to convert the detection of e-commerce into a supervised classification problem, where each record is obtained from the automatic analysis of one corporate website, and the class is the presence or the absence of e-commerce facilities. The automatic generation of similar data records requires the use of several Text Mining phases; in particular we compare six strategies based on the selection of best words and best n-grams. After this, we classify the obtained dataset by means of four classification algorithms: Support Vector Machines; Random Forest; Statistical and Logical Analysis of Data; Logistic Classifier. This turns out to be a difficult case of classification problem. However, after a careful design and set-up of the whole procedure, the results on a practical case of Italian enterprises are encouraging
