    Kuhn-Tucker-based stability conditions for systems with saturation

    This paper presents a new approach to deriving stability conditions for continuous-time linear systems interconnected with a saturation. The method presented can be extended to handle a dead-zone, or in general, nonlinearities in the form of piecewise linear functions. By representing the saturation as a constrained optimization problem, the necessary (Kuhn-Tucker) conditions for optimality are used to derive linear and quadratic constraints which characterize the saturation. After selecting a candidate Lyapunov function, we pose the question of whether the Lyapunov function is decreasing along trajectories of the system as an implication between the necessary conditions derived from the saturation optimization, and the time derivative of the Lyapunov function. This leads to stability conditions in terms of linear matrix inequalities, which are obtained by an application of the S-procedure to the implication. An example is provided where the proposed technique is compared and contrasted with previous analysis methods

    Contrastive learning and neural oscillations

    The concept of Contrastive Learning (CL) is developed as a family of possible learning algorithms for neural networks. CL is an extension of Deterministic Boltzmann Machines to more general dynamical systems. During learning, the network oscillates between two phases. One phase has a teacher signal and one phase has no teacher signal. The weights are updated using a learning rule that corresponds to gradient descent on a contrast function that measures the discrepancy between the free network and the network with a teacher signal. The CL approach provides a general unified framework for developing new learning algorithms. It also shows that many different types of clamping and teacher signals are possible. Several examples are given and an analysis of the landscape of the contrast function is proposed with some relevant predictions for the CL curves. An approach that may be suitable for collective analog implementations is described. Simulation results and possible extensions are briefly discussed together with a new conjecture regarding the function of certain oscillations in the brain. In the appendix, we also examine two extensions of contrastive learning to time-dependent trajectories

    STABLE ADAPTIVE CONTROL FOR A CLASS OF NONLINEAR SYSTEMS WITHOUT USE OF A SUPERVISORY TERM IN THE CONTROL LAW

    In this paper, a direct adaptive control scheme for a class of nonlinear systems is proposed. The architecture employs a Gaussian radial basis function (RBF) network to construct an adaptive controller. The parameters of the adaptive controller are adapted and changed according to a law derived using Lyapunov stability theory. The centres of the RBF network are adapted on line using the k-means algorithm. Asymptotic Lyapunov stability is established without the use of a supervisory (compensatory) term in the control law and with the tracking errors converging to a neighbourhood of the origin. Finally, a simulation is provided to explore the feasibility of the proposed neuronal controller design method

    A circular model for song motor control in Serinus canaria

    Song production in songbirds is controlled by a network of nuclei distributed across several brain regions, which drives respiratory and vocal motor systems to generate sound. We built a model for birdsong production, whose variables are the average activities of different neural populations within these nuclei of the song system. We focus on the predictions of respiratory patterns of song, because these can be easily measured and therefore provide a validation for the model. We test the hypothesis that it is possible to construct a model in which (1) the activity of an expiratory related (ER) neural population fits the observed pressure patterns used by canaries during singing, and (2) a higher forebrain neural population, HVC, is sparsely active, simultaneously with significant motor instances of the pressure patterns. We show that in order to achieve these two requirements, the ER neural population needs to receive two inputs: a direct one, and its copy after being processed by other areas of the song system. The model is capable of reproducing the measured respiratory patterns and makes specific predictions on the timing of HVC activity during their production. These results suggest that vocal production is controlled by a circular network rather than by a simple top-down architecture.Fil: Alonso, Rodrigo. Universidad de Buenos Aires.     Adaptive control for time-varying systems: congelation and interconnection

    This thesis investigates the adaptive control problem for systems with time-varying parameters. Two concepts are developed and exploited throughout the thesis: the congelation of variables, and the active nodes. The thesis first revisits the classical adaptive schemes and explains the challenges brought by the presence of time-varying parameters. Then, the concept of congelation of variables is introduced and its use in combinations with passivity-based, immersion-and-invariant, and identification-based adaptive schemes are discussed. As the congelation of variables method introduces additional interconnection in the closed-loop system, a framework for small-gain-like control synthesis for interconnected systems is needed.\vspace{2ex} To this end, the thesis proceeds by introducing the notion of active nodes. This is instrumental to show that as long as a class of node systems that possess adjustable damping parameters, that is the active nodes, satisfy certain graph-theoretic conditions, the desired small-gain-like property for the overall system can be enforced via tuning these adjustable parameters. Such conditions for interconnected systems with quadratic, nonlinear, and linearly parametrized supply rates, respectively, are elaborated from the analysis and control synthesis perspectives. The placement and the computation/adaptation of the damping parameters are also discussed. Following the introduction of these two fundamental tools, the thesis proceeds by discussing state-feedback designs for a class of lower-triangular nonlinear systems. The backstepping technique and the congelation of variables method are combined for passivity-based, immersion-and-invariance, and identification-based schemes. The notion of active nodes is exploited to yield simple and systematic proofs. Based on the results established for lower-triangular systems, the thesis continues to investigate output-feedback adaptive control problems. An immersion-and-invariance scheme for single-input single-output linear systems and a passivity-based scheme for nonlinear systems in observer form are proposed. The proof and interpretation of these results are also based on the notion of active nodes. The simulation results show that the adaptive control schemes proposed in the thesis have superior performance when compared with the classical schemes in the presence of time-varying parameters. Finally, the thesis studies two applications of the theoretical results proposed. The servo control problem for serial elastic actuators, and the disease control problem for interconnected settlements. The discussions show that these problems can be solved efficiently using the framework provided by the thesis.Open Acces

    Robust Load Frequency Control of Nonlinear Power Networks

    This paper proposes a decentralised second-order sliding mode (SOSM) control strategy for load frequency control (LFC) in power networks, regulating the frequency and maintaining the net inter-area power flows at their scheduled values. The considered power network is partitioned into control areas, where each area is modelled by an equivalent generator including second-order turbine-governor dynamics, and where the areas are nonlinearly coupled through the power flows. Asymptotic convergence to the desired state is established by constraining the state of the power network on a suitably designed sliding manifold. This manifold is designed relying on stability considerations made on the basis of an incremental energy (storage) function. Simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed control approach

    Synchronous behavior in networks of coupled systems : with applications to neuronal dynamics

    Synchronization in networks of interacting dynamical systems is an interesting phenomenon that arises in nature, science and engineering. Examples include the simultaneous flashing of thousands of fireflies, the synchronous firing of action potentials by groups of neurons, cooperative behavior of robots and synchronization of chaotic systems with applications to secure communication. How is it possible that systems in a network synchronize? A key ingredient is that the systems in the network "communicate" information about their state to the systems they are connected to. This exchange of information ultimately results in synchronization of the systems in the network. The question is how the systems in the network should be connected and respond to the received information to achieve synchronization. In other words, which network structures and what kind of coupling functions lead to synchronization of the systems? In addition, since the exchange of information is likely to take some time, can systems in networks show synchronous behavior in presence of time-delays? The first part of this thesis focusses on synchronization of identical systems that interact via diffusive coupling, that is a coupling defined through the weighted difference of the output signals of the systems. The coupling might contain timedelays. In particular, two types of diffusive time-delay coupling are considered: coupling type I is diffusive coupling in which only the transmitted signals contain a time-delay, and coupling type II is diffusive coupling in which every signal is timedelayed. It is proven that networks of diffusive time-delay coupled systems that satisfy a strict semipassivity property have solutions that are ultimately bounded. This means that the solutions of the interconnected systems always enter some compact set in finite time and remain in that set ever after. Moreover, it is proven that nonlinear minimum-phase strictly semipassive systems that interact via diffusive coupling always synchronize provided the interaction is sufficiently strong. If the coupling functions contain time-delays, then these systems synchronize if, in addition to the sufficiently strong interaction, the product of the time-delay and the coupling strength is sufficiently small. Next, the specific role of the topology of the network in relation to synchronization is discussed. First, using symmetries in the network, linear invariant manifolds for networks of the diffusively time-delayed coupled systems are identified. If such a linear invariant manifold is also attracting, then the network possibly shows partial synchronization. Partial synchronization is the phenomenon that some, at least two, systems in the network synchronize with each other but not with every system in the network. It is proven that a linear invariant manifold defined by a symmetry in a network of strictly semipassive systems is attracting if the coupling strength is sufficiently large and the product of the coupling strength and the time-delay is sufficiently small. The network shows partial synchronization if the values of the coupling strength and time-delay for which this manifold is attracting differ from those for which all systems in the network synchronize. Next, for systems that interact via symmetric coupling type II, it is shown that the values of the coupling strength and time-delay for which any network synchronizes can be determined from the structure of that network and the values of the coupling strength and time-delay for which two systems synchronize. In the second part of the thesis the theory presented in the first part is used to explain synchronization in networks of neurons that interact via electrical synapses. In particular, it is proven that four important models for neuronal activity, namely the Hodgkin-Huxley model, the Morris-Lecar model, the Hindmarsh-Rose model and the FitzHugh-Nagumo model, all have the semipassivity property. Since electrical synapses can be modeled by diffusive coupling, and all these neuronal models are nonlinear minimum-phase, synchronization in networks of these neurons happens if the interaction is sufficiently strong and the product of the time-delay and the coupling strength is sufficiently small. Numerical simulations with various networks of Hindmarsh-Rose neurons support this result. In addition to the results of numerical simulations, synchronization and partial synchronization is witnessed in an experimental setup with type II coupled electronic realizations of Hindmarsh-Rose neurons. These experimental results can be fully explained by the theoretical findings that are presented in the first part of the thesis. The thesis continues with a study of a network of pancreatic -cells. There is evidence that these beta-cells are diffusively coupled and that the synchronous bursting activity of the network is related to the secretion of insulin. However, if the network consists of active (oscillatory) beta-cells and inactive (dead) beta-cells, it might happen that, due to the interaction between the active and inactive cells, the activity of the network dies out which results in a inhibition of the insulin secretion. This problem is related to Diabetes Mellitus type 1. Whether the activity dies out or not depends on the number of cells that are active relative to the number of inactive cells. A bifurcation analysis gives estimates of the number of active cells relative to the number of inactive cells for which the network remains active. At last the controlled synchronization problem for all-to-all coupled strictly semipassive systems is considered. In particular, a systematic design procedure is presented which gives (nonlinear) coupling functions that guarantee synchronization of the systems. The coupling functions have the form of a definite integral of a scalar weight function on a interval defined by the outputs of the systems. The advantage of these coupling functions over linear diffusive coupling is that they provide high gain only when necessary, i.e. at those parts of the state space of the network where nonlinearities need to be suppressed.
