    Kimera: from SLAM to Spatial Perception with 3D Dynamic Scene Graphs

    Humans are able to form a complex mental model of the environment they move in. This mental model captures geometric and semantic aspects of the scene, describes the environment at multiple levels of abstractions (e.g., objects, rooms, buildings), includes static and dynamic entities and their relations (e.g., a person is in a room at a given time). In contrast, current robots' internal representations still provide a partial and fragmented understanding of the environment, either in the form of a sparse or dense set of geometric primitives (e.g., points, lines, planes, voxels) or as a collection of objects. This paper attempts to reduce the gap between robot and human perception by introducing a novel representation, a 3D Dynamic Scene Graph(DSG), that seamlessly captures metric and semantic aspects of a dynamic environment. A DSG is a layered graph where nodes represent spatial concepts at different levels of abstraction, and edges represent spatio-temporal relations among nodes. Our second contribution is Kimera, the first fully automatic method to build a DSG from visual-inertial data. Kimera includes state-of-the-art techniques for visual-inertial SLAM, metric-semantic 3D reconstruction, object localization, human pose and shape estimation, and scene parsing. Our third contribution is a comprehensive evaluation of Kimera in real-life datasets and photo-realistic simulations, including a newly released dataset, uHumans2, which simulates a collection of crowded indoor and outdoor scenes. Our evaluation shows that Kimera achieves state-of-the-art performance in visual-inertial SLAM, estimates an accurate 3D metric-semantic mesh model in real-time, and builds a DSG of a complex indoor environment with tens of objects and humans in minutes. Our final contribution shows how to use a DSG for real-time hierarchical semantic path-planning.     Dynamic Volume Rendering of Functional Medical Data on Dissimilar Hardware Platforms

    In the last 30 years, medical imaging has become one of the most used diagnostic tools in the medical profession. Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) technologies have become widely adopted because of their ability to capture the human body in a non-invasive manner. A volumetric dataset is a series of orthogonal 2D slices captured at a regular interval, typically along the axis of the body from the head to the feet. Volume rendering is a computer graphics technique that allows volumetric data to be visualized and manipulated as a single 3D object. Iso-surface rendering, image splatting, shear warp, texture slicing, and raycasting are volume rendering methods, each with associated advantages and disadvantages. Raycasting is widely regarded as the highest quality renderer of these methods. Originally, CT and MRI hardware was limited to providing a single 3D scan of the human body. The technology has improved to allow a set of scans capable of capturing anatomical movements like a beating heart. The capturing of anatomical data over time is referred to as functional imaging. Functional MRI (fMRI) is used to capture changes in the human body over time. While fMRI’s can be used to capture any anatomical data over time, one of the more common uses of fMRI is to capture brain activity. The fMRI scanning process is typically broken up into a time consuming high resolution anatomical scan and a series of quick low resolution scans capturing activity. The low resolution activity data is mapped onto the high resolution anatomical data to show changes over time. Academic research has advanced volume rendering and specifically fMRI volume rendering. Unfortunately, academic research is typically a one-off solution to a singular medical case or set of data, causing any advances to be problem specific as opposed to a general capability. Additionally, academic volume renderers are often designed to work on a specific device and operating system under controlled conditions. This prevents volume rendering from being used across the ever expanding number of different computing devices, such as desktops, laptops, immersive virtual reality systems, and mobile computers like phones or tablets. This research will investigate the feasibility of creating a generic software capability to perform real-time 4D volume rendering, via raycasting, on desktop, mobile, and immersive virtual reality platforms. Implementing a GPU-based 4D volume raycasting method for mobile devices will harness the power of the increasing number of mobile computational devices being used by medical professionals. Developing support for immersive virtual reality can enhance medical professionals’ interpretation of 3D physiology with the additional depth information provided by stereoscopic 3D. The results of this research will help expand the use of 4D volume rendering beyond the traditional desktop computer in the medical field. Developing the same 4D volume rendering capabilities across dissimilar platforms has many challenges. Each platform relies on their own coding languages, libraries, and hardware support. There are tradeoffs between using languages and libraries native to each platform and using a generic cross-platform system, such as a game engine. Native libraries will generally be more efficient during application run-time, but they require different coding implementations for each platform. The decision was made to use platform native languages and libraries in this research, whenever practical, in an attempt to achieve the best possible frame rates. 4D volume raycasting provides unique challenges independent of the platform. Specifically, fMRI data loading, volume animation, and multiple volume rendering. Additionally, real-time raycasting has never been successfully performed on a mobile device. Previous research relied on less computationally expensive methods, such as orthogonal texture slicing, to achieve real-time frame rates. These challenges will be addressed as the contributions of this research. The first contribution was exploring the feasibility of generic functional data input across desktop, mobile, and immersive virtual reality. To visualize 4D fMRI data it was necessary to build in the capability to read Neuroimaging Informatics Technology Initiative (NIfTI) files. The NIfTI format was designed to overcome limitations of 3D file formats like DICOM and store functional imagery with a single high-resolution anatomical scan and a set of low-resolution anatomical scans. Allowing input of the NIfTI binary data required creating custom C++ routines, as no object oriented APIs freely available for use existed. The NIfTI input code was built using C++ and the C++ Standard Library to be both light weight and cross-platform. Multi-volume rendering is another challenge of fMRI data visualization and a contribution of this work. fMRI data is typically broken into a single high-resolution anatomical volume and a series of low-resolution volumes that capture anatomical changes. Visualizing two volumes at the same time is known as multi-volume visualization. Therefore, the ability to correctly align and scale the volumes relative to each other was necessary. It was also necessary to develop a compositing method to combine data from both volumes into a single cohesive representation. Three prototype applications were built for the different platforms to test the feasibility of 4D volume raycasting. One each for desktop, mobile, and virtual reality. Although the backend implementations were required to be different between the three platforms, the raycasting functionality and features were identical. Therefore, the same fMRI dataset resulted in the same 3D visualization independent of the platform itself. Each platform uses the same NIfTI data loader and provides support for dataset coloring and windowing (tissue density manipulation). The fMRI data can be viewed changing over time by either animation through the time steps, like a movie, or using an interface slider to “scrub” through the different time steps of the data. The prototype applications data load times and frame rates were tested to determine if they achieved the real-time interaction goal. Real-time interaction was defined by achieving 10 frames per second (fps) or better, based on the work of Miller [1]. The desktop version was evaluated on a 2013 MacBook Pro running OS X 10.12 with a 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7 processor, 16 GB of RAM, and a NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M graphics card. The immersive application was tested in the C6 CAVE™, a 96 graphics node computer cluster comprised of NVIDIA Quadro 6000 graphics cards running Red Hat Enterprise Linux. The mobile application was evaluated on a 2016 9.7” iPad Pro running iOS 9.3.4. The iPad had a 64-bit Apple A9X dual core processor with 2 GB of built in memory. Two different fMRI brain activity datasets with different voxel resolutions were used as test datasets. Datasets were tested using both the 3D structural data, the 4D functional data, and a combination of the two. Frame rates for the desktop implementation were consistently above 10 fps, indicating that real-time 4D volume raycasting is possible on desktop hardware. The mobile and virtual reality platforms were able to perform real-time 3D volume raycasting consistently. This is a marked improvement for 3D mobile volume raycasting that was previously only able to achieve under one frame per second [2]. Both VR and mobile platforms were able to raycast the 4D only data at real-time frame rates, but did not consistently meet 10 fps when rendering both the 3D structural and 4D functional data simultaneously. However, 7 frames per second was the lowest frame rate recorded, indicating that hardware advances will allow consistent real-time raycasting of 4D fMRI data in the near future

    Mobile Augmented Reality: User Interfaces, Frameworks, and Intelligence

    Mobile Augmented Reality (MAR) integrates computer-generated virtual objects with physical environments for mobile devices. MAR systems enable users to interact with MAR devices, such as smartphones and head-worn wearables, and perform seamless transitions from the physical world to a mixed world with digital entities. These MAR systems support user experiences using MAR devices to provide universal access to digital content. Over the past 20 years, several MAR systems have been developed, however, the studies and design of MAR frameworks have not yet been systematically reviewed from the perspective of user-centric design. This article presents the first effort of surveying existing MAR frameworks (count: 37) and further discuss the latest studies on MAR through a top-down approach: (1) MAR applications; (2) MAR visualisation techniques adaptive to user mobility and contexts; (3) systematic evaluation of MAR frameworks, including supported platforms and corresponding features such as tracking, feature extraction, and sensing capabilities; and (4) underlying machine learning approaches supporting intelligent operations within MAR systems. Finally, we summarise the development of emerging research fields and the current state-of-the-art, and discuss the important open challenges and possible theoretical and technical directions. This survey aims to benefit both researchers and MAR system developers alike.Peer reviewe

    Real-time GPU-accelerated Out-of-Core Rendering and Light-field Display Visualization for Improved Massive Volume Understanding

    Nowadays huge digital models are becoming increasingly available for a number of different applications ranging from CAD, industrial design to medicine and natural sciences. Particularly, in the field of medicine, data acquisition devices such as MRI or CT scanners routinely produce huge volumetric datasets. Currently, these datasets can easily reach dimensions of 1024^3 voxels and datasets larger than that are not uncommon. This thesis focuses on efficient methods for the interactive exploration of such large volumes using direct volume visualization techniques on commodity platforms. To reach this goal specialized multi-resolution structures and algorithms, which are able to directly render volumes of potentially unlimited size are introduced. The developed techniques are output sensitive and their rendering costs depend only on the complexity of the generated images and not on the complexity of the input datasets. The advanced characteristics of modern GPGPU architectures are exploited and combined with an out-of-core framework in order to provide a more flexible, scalable and efficient implementation of these algorithms and data structures on single GPUs and GPU clusters. To improve visual perception and understanding, the use of novel 3D display technology based on a light-field approach is introduced. This kind of device allows multiple naked-eye users to perceive virtual objects floating inside the display workspace, exploiting the stereo and horizontal parallax. A set of specialized and interactive illustrative techniques capable of providing different contextual information in different areas of the display, as well as an out-of-core CUDA based ray-casting engine with a number of improvements over current GPU volume ray-casters are both reported. The possibilities of the system are demonstrated by the multi-user interactive exploration of 64-GVoxel datasets on a 35-MPixel light-field display driven by a cluster of PCs. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Negli ultimi anni si sta verificando una proliferazione sempre più consistente di modelli digitali di notevoli dimensioni in campi applicativi che variano dal CAD e la progettazione industriale alla medicina e le scienze naturali. In modo particolare, nel settore della medicina, le apparecchiature di acquisizione dei dati come RM o TAC producono comunemente dei dataset volumetrici di grosse dimensioni. Questi dataset possono facilmente raggiungere taglie dell’ordine di 10243 voxels e dataset di dimensioni maggiori possono essere frequenti. Questa tesi si focalizza su metodi efficienti per l’esplorazione di tali grossi volumi utilizzando tecniche di visualizzazione diretta su piattaforme HW di diffusione di massa. Per raggiungere tale obiettivo si introducono strutture specializzate multi-risoluzione e algoritmi in grado di visualizzare volumi di dimensioni potenzialmente infinite. Le tecniche sviluppate sono “ouput sensitive” e la loro complessità di rendering dipende soltanto dalle dimensioni delle immagini generate e non dalle dimensioni dei dataset di input. Le caratteristiche avanzate delle architetture moderne GPGPU vengono inoltre sfruttate e combinate con un framework “out-of-core” in modo da offrire una implementazione di questi algoritmi e strutture dati più flessibile, scalabile ed efficiente su singole GPU o cluster di GPU. Per migliorare la percezione visiva e la comprensione dei dati, viene introdotto inoltre l’uso di tecnologie di display 3D di nuova generazione basate su un approccio di tipo light-field. Questi tipi di dispositivi consentono a diversi utenti di percepire ad occhio nudo oggetti che galleggiano all’interno dello spazio di lavoro del display, sfruttando lo stereo e la parallasse orizzontale. Si descrivono infine un insieme di tecniche illustrative interattive in grado di fornire diverse informazioni contestuali in diverse zone del display, così come un motore di “ray-casting out-of-core” basato su CUDA e contenente una serie di miglioramenti rispetto agli attuali metodi GPU di “ray-casting” di volumi.     Optimization techniques for computationally expensive rendering algorithms

    Realistic rendering in computer graphics simulates the interactions of light and surfaces. While many accurate models for surface reflection and lighting, including solid surfaces and participating media have been described; most of them rely on intensive computation. Common practices such as adding constraints and assumptions can increase performance. However, they may compromise the quality of the resulting images or the variety of phenomena that can be accurately represented. In this thesis, we will focus on rendering methods that require high amounts of computational resources. Our intention is to consider several conceptually different approaches capable of reducing these requirements with only limited implications in the quality of the results. The first part of this work will study rendering of time-­¿varying participating media. Examples of this type of matter are smoke, optically thick gases and any material that, unlike the vacuum, scatters and absorbs the light that travels through it. We will focus on a subset of algorithms that approximate realistic illumination using images of real world scenes. Starting from the traditional ray marching algorithm, we will suggest and implement different optimizations that will allow performing the computation at interactive frame rates. This thesis will also analyze two different aspects of the generation of anti-­¿aliased images. One targeted to the rendering of screen-­¿space anti-­¿aliased images and the reduction of the artifacts generated in rasterized lines and edges. We expect to describe an implementation that, working as a post process, it is efficient enough to be added to existing rendering pipelines with reduced performance impact. A third method will take advantage of the limitations of the human visual system (HVS) to reduce the resources required to render temporally antialiased images. While film and digital cameras naturally produce motion blur, rendering pipelines need to explicitly simulate it. This process is known to be one of the most important burdens for every rendering pipeline. Motivated by this, we plan to run a series of psychophysical experiments targeted at identifying groups of motion-­¿blurred images that are perceptually equivalent. A possible outcome is the proposal of criteria that may lead to reductions of the rendering budgets

    Providentia - A Large-Scale Sensor System for the Assistance of Autonomous Vehicles and Its Evaluation

    The environmental perception of an autonomous vehicle is limited by its physical sensor ranges and algorithmic performance, as well as by occlusions that degrade its understanding of an ongoing traffic situation. This not only poses a significant threat to safety and limits driving speeds, but it can also lead to inconvenient maneuvers. Intelligent Infrastructure Systems can help to alleviate these problems. An Intelligent Infrastructure System can fill in the gaps in a vehicle's perception and extend its field of view by providing additional detailed information about its surroundings, in the form of a digital model of the current traffic situation, i.e. a digital twin. However, detailed descriptions of such systems and working prototypes demonstrating their feasibility are scarce. In this paper, we propose a hardware and software architecture that enables such a reliable Intelligent Infrastructure System to be built. We have implemented this system in the real world and demonstrate its ability to create an accurate digital twin of an extended highway stretch, thus enhancing an autonomous vehicle's perception beyond the limits of its on-board sensors. Furthermore, we evaluate the accuracy and reliability of the digital twin by using aerial images and earth observation methods for generating ground truth data

    Translating computational modelling tools for clinical practice in congenital heart disease

    Increasingly large numbers of medical centres worldwide are equipped with the means to acquire 3D images of patients by utilising magnetic resonance (MR) or computed tomography (CT) scanners. The interpretation of patient 3D image data has significant implications on clinical decision-making and treatment planning. In their raw form, MR and CT images have become critical in routine practice. However, in congenital heart disease (CHD), lesions are often anatomically and physiologically complex. In many cases, 3D imaging alone can fail to provide conclusive information for the clinical team. In the past 20-30 years, several image-derived modelling applications have shown major advancements. Tools such as computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and virtual reality (VR) have successfully demonstrated valuable uses in the management of CHD. However, due to current software limitations, these applications have remained largely isolated to research settings, and have yet to become part of clinical practice. The overall aim of this project was to explore new routes for making conventional computational modelling software more accessible for CHD clinics. The first objective was to create an automatic and fast pipeline for performing vascular CFD simulations. By leveraging machine learning, a solution was built using synthetically generated aortic anatomies, and was seen to be able to predict 3D aortic pressure and velocity flow fields with comparable accuracy to conventional CFD. The second objective was to design a virtual reality (VR) application tailored for supporting the surgical planning and teaching of CHD. The solution was a Unity-based application which included numerous specialised tools, such as mesh-editing features and online networking for group learning. Overall, the outcomes of this ongoing project showed strong indications that the integration of VR and CFD into clinical settings is possible, and has potential for extending 3D imaging and supporting the diagnosis, management and teaching of CHD

    Explorative coastal oceanographic visual analytics : oceans of data

    The widely acknowledged challenge to data analysis and understanding, resulting from the exponential increase in volumes of data generated by increasingly complex modelling and sampling systems, is a problem experienced by many researchers, including ocean scientists. The thesis explores a visualization and visual analytics solution for predictive studies of coastal shelf and estuarine modelled, hydrodynamics undertaken to understand sea level rise, as a contribution to wider climate change studies, and to underpin coastal zone planning, flood prevention and extreme event management. But these studies are complex and require numerous simulations of estuarine hydrodynamics, generating extremely large datasets of multi-field data. This type\ud of data is acknowledged as difficult to visualize and analyse, as its numerous attributes present significant computational challenges, and ideally require a wide range of approaches to provide the necessary insight. These challenges are not easily overcome with the current visualization and analysis methodologies employed by coastal shelf hydrodynamic researchers, who use several software systems to generate graphs, each taking considerable time to operate, thus it is difficult to explore different scenarios and explore the data interactively and visually. The thesis, therefore, develops novel visualization and visual analytics techniques to help researchers overcome the limitations of existing methods (for example in understanding key tidal components); analyse data in a timely manner and explore different scenarios. There were a number of challenges to this: the size of the data, resulting in lengthy computing time, also many data values becoming plotted on one pixel (overplotting). The thesis presents: (1) a new visualization framework (VINCA) using caching and hierarchical aggregation techniques to make the data more interactive, plus explorative, coordinated multiple views, to enable the scientists to explore the data. (2) A novel estuarine transect profiler and flux tool, which provides instantaneous flux calculations across an estuary. Measures of flux are of great significance in oceanographic studies, yet are notoriously difficult and time consuming to calculate with the commonly used tools. This derived data is added back into the database for further investigation and analysis. (3) New views, including a novel, dynamic, spatially aggregated Parallel Coordinate Plots (Sa-PCP), are developed to provide different perspectives of the spatial, time dependent data, also methodologies for developing high-quality (journal ready) output from the visualization tool. Finally, (4) the dissertation explored the use of hierarchical data-structures and caching techniques to enable fast analysis on a desktop computer and to overcome the overplotting challenge for this data
