    Applying autonomy to distributed satellite systems: Trends, challenges, and future prospects

    While monolithic satellite missions still pose significant advantages in terms of accuracy and operations, novel distributed architectures are promising improved flexibility, responsiveness, and adaptability to structural and functional changes. Large satellite swarms, opportunistic satellite networks or heterogeneous constellations hybridizing small-spacecraft nodes with highperformance satellites are becoming feasible and advantageous alternatives requiring the adoption of new operation paradigms that enhance their autonomy. While autonomy is a notion that is gaining acceptance in monolithic satellite missions, it can also be deemed an integral characteristic in Distributed Satellite Systems (DSS). In this context, this paper focuses on the motivations for system-level autonomy in DSS and justifies its need as an enabler of system qualities. Autonomy is also presented as a necessary feature to bring new distributed Earth observation functions (which require coordination and collaboration mechanisms) and to allow for novel structural functions (e.g., opportunistic coalitions, exchange of resources, or in-orbit data services). Mission Planning and Scheduling (MPS) frameworks are then presented as a key component to implement autonomous operations in satellite missions. An exhaustive knowledge classification explores the design aspects of MPS for DSS, and conceptually groups them into: components and organizational paradigms; problem modeling and representation; optimization techniques and metaheuristics; execution and runtime characteristics and the notions of tasks, resources, and constraints. This paper concludes by proposing future strands of work devoted to study the trade-offs of autonomy in large-scale, highly dynamic and heterogeneous networks through frameworks that consider some of the limitations of small spacecraft technologies.Postprint (author's final draft

    Analysis of a hybrid Genetic Simulated Annealing strategy applied in multi-objective optimization of orbital maneuvers

    Optimization of orbital maneuvers is one of the main issues in conceptual and preliminary design of spacecraft in different space missions. The main issue in optimization of high-thrust orbit transfers is that the common optimization algorithms such as Genetic Algorithm and Simulated Annealing are not effectual in finding optimal transfer when they are purely used in optimization. In such problems, modified algorithms are required to find the optimal transfer. Such modifications involve consecutive search and dynamic boundary delimitation. This paper presents a direct approach to optimize high-thrust orbit transfers using a hybrid algorithm based on Simulated Annealing and Genetic Algorithm. This multi-objective optimization method considers optimum fuel transfers while minimizing the error of orbital elements at the end of orbital maneuver. Trajectory optimization is conducted based on converting the orbit transfer problem into a parameter optimization one by assigning proper mathematical functions to the variation of thrust vector direction. Optimization problem is solved using intelligent boundary delimitation in a general optimization method. Taking advantage of nonlinear simulation, a technique is proposed to acquire good quantity for optimization variables, which results in enlarged convergence domain. Numerical example of a three dimensional optimal orbit transfer is analyzed and the accuracy of proposed algorithm is presented. Optimality and convergence of the proposed algorithm is discussed by comparing the results obtained by different approaches. Results confirm the efficiency of the proposed hybrid algorithm in comparison to Simulated Annealing and Genetic Algorithm

    Analysis of interplanetary solar sail trajectories with attitude dynamics

    We present a new approach to the problem of optimal control of solar sails for low-thrust trajectory optimization. The objective was to find the required control torque magnitudes in order to steer a solar sail in interplanetary space. A new steering strategy, controlling the solar sail with generic torques applied about the spacecraft body axes, is integrated into the existing low-thrust trajectory optimization software InTrance. This software combines artificial neural networks and evolutionary algorithms to find steering strategies close to the global optimum without an initial guess. Furthermore, we implement a three rotational degree-of-freedom rigid-body attitude dynamics model to represent the solar sail in space. Two interplanetary transfers to Mars and Neptune are chosen to represent typical future solar sail mission scenarios. The results found with the new steering strategy are compared to the existing reference trajectories without attitude dynamics. The resulting control torques required to accomplish the missions are investigated, as they pose the primary requirements to a real on-board attitude control system

    All Sky Survey Mission Observing Scenario Strategy

    This paper develops a general observing strategy for missions performing all-sky surveys, where a single spacecraft maps the celestial sphere subject to realistic constraints. The strategy is flexible such that targeted observations and variable coverage requirements can be achieved. This paper focuses on missions operating in Low Earth Orbit, where the thermal and stray-light constraints due to the Sun, Earth, and Moon result in interacting and dynamic constraints. The approach is applicable to broader mission classes, such as those that operate in different orbits or that survey the Earth. First, the instrument and spacecraft configuration is optimized to enable visibility of the targeted observations throughout the year. Second, a constraint-based high-level strategy is presented for scheduling throughout the year subject to a simplified subset of the constraints. Third, a heuristic-based scheduling algorithm is developed to assign the all-sky observations over short planning horizons. The constraint-based approach guarantees solution feasibility. The approach is applied to the proposed SPHEREx mission, which includes coverage of the North and South Celestial Poles, Galactic plane, and a uniform coverage all-sky survey, and the ability to achieve science requirements demonstrated and visualized.     Extension of the proximity-quotient control law for low-thrust propulsion

    In this paper, the proximity quotient control law, first developed by Petropoulos, is extended to account for both third body effects and solar radiation pressure. The perturbing effect of solar radiation pressure becomes relevant when dealing with solar sails, or large optics in space. Equations for the disturbing acceleration and disturbing potential function were derived for the perturbations, then analyzed to determine the minimum and maximum rate of changes of the Keplerian elements given the thrust vector and true anomaly of the spacecraft. These were then analytically incorporated into the Q-law feedback function. The complete mathematical derivations are presented. The extended Q-law is compared to the fully optimal control law, stemming from optimal control theory, for the same dynamical model. Two missions are used as test cases

    Space robotics: Recent accomplishments and opportunities for future research

    The Langley Guidance, Navigation, and Control Technical Committee (GNCTC) was one of six technical committees created in 1991 by the Chief Scientist, Dr. Michael F. Card. During the kickoff meeting Dr. Card charged the chairmen to: (1) establish a cross-Center committee; (2) support at least one workshop in a selected discipline; and (3) prepare a technical paper on recent accomplishments in the discipline and on opportunities for future research. The Guidance, Navigation, and Control Committee was formed and selected for focus on the discipline of Space robotics. This report is a summary of the committee's assessment of recent accomplishments and opportunities for future research. The report is organized as follows. First is an overview of the data sources used by the committee. Next is a description of technical needs identified by the committee followed by recent accomplishments. Opportunities for future research ends the main body of the report. It includes the primary recommendation of the committee that NASA establish a national space facility for the development of space automation and robotics, one element of which is a telerobotic research platform in space. References 1 and 2 are the proceedings of two workshops sponsored by the committee during its June 1991, through May 1992 term. The focus of the committee for the June 1992 - May 1993 term will be to further define to the recommended platform in space and to add an additional discipline which includes aircraft related GN&C issues. To the latter end members performing aircraft related research will be added to the committee. (A preliminary assessment of future opportunities in aircraft-related GN&C research has been included as appendix A.

    Genetic algorithms for satellite scheduling problems

    Recently there has been a growing interest in mission operations scheduling problem. The problem, in a variety of formulations, arises in management of satellite/space missions requiring efficient allocation of user requests to make possible the communication between operations teams and spacecraft systems. Not only large space agencies, such as ESA (European Space Agency) and NASA, but also smaller research institutions and universities can establish nowadays their satellite mission, and thus need intelligent systems to automate the allocation of ground station services to space missions. In this paper, we present some relevant formulations of the satellite scheduling viewed as a family of problems and identify various forms of optimization objectives. The main complexities, due highly constrained nature, windows accessibility and visibility, multi-objectives and conflicting objectives are examined. Then, we discuss the resolution of the problem through different heuristic methods. In particular, we focus on the version of ground station scheduling, for which we present computational results obtained with Genetic Algorithms using the STK simulation toolkit.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
