Visual ageing of human faces in three dimensions using morphable models and projection to latent structures
We present an approach to synthesising the effects of ageing on human face images using three-dimensional modelling. We extract a set of three dimensional face models from a set of two-dimensional face images by fitting a Morphable Model. We propose a method to age these face models using Partial Least Squares to extract from the data-set those factors most related to ageing. These ageing related factors are used to train an individually weighted linear model. We show that this is an effective means of producing an aged face image and compare this method to two other linear ageing methods for ageing face models. Developing a Sufficient Knowledge Base for Faces: Implicit Recognition Memory for Distinctive versus Typical Female Faces
Research on adults' face recognition abilities provides evidence for a distinctiveness effect such that distinctive faces are remembered better and more easily than typical faces. Research on this effect in the developmental literature is limited. In the current study, two experiments tested recognition memory for evidence of the distinctiveness effect. Study 1 tested infants (9- and 10-month olds) using a novelty preference paradigm. Infants were tested for immediate and delayed memory. Results indicated memory for only the most distinctive faces. Study 2 tested preschool children (3- and 4-year-olds) using an interactive story. Children were tested with an implicit (i.e. surprise) memory test. Results indicated a memory advantage for distinctive faces by three-year-old girls and four-year-old boys and girls. Contrary to traditional theories of changes in children's processing strategies, experience is also a critical factor in the development of face recognition abilities

Epistemic Closure in Folk Epistemology
We report the results of four empirical studies designed to investigate the extent to which an epistemic closure principle for knowledge is reflected in folk epistemology. Previous work by Turri (2015a) suggested that our shared epistemic practices may only include a source-relative closure principleâone that applies to perceptual beliefs but not to inferential beliefs. We argue that the results of our studies provide reason for thinking that individuals are making a performance error when their knowledge attributions and denials conflict with the closure principle. When we used research materials that overcome what we think are difficulties with Turriâs original materials, we found that participants did not reject closure. Furthermore, when we presented Turriâs original materials to non-philosophers with expertise in deductive reasoning (viz., professional mathematicians), they endorsed closure for both perceptual and inferential beliefs. Our results suggest that an unrestricted closure principleâone that applies to all beliefs, regardless of their sourceâprovides a better model of folk patterns of knowledge attribution than a source-relative closure principle
Visualization in cyber-geography: reconsidering cartography's concept of visualization in current usercentric cybergeographic cosmologies
This article discusses some epistemological problems of a semiotic and cybernetic
character in two current scientific cosmologies in the study of geographic
information systems (GIS) with special reference to the concept of visualization in
modern cartography.
Setting off from Michael Battyâs prolegomena for a virtual geography and Michael
Goodchildâs âHuman-Computer-Reality-Interactionâ as the field of a new media
convergence and networking of GIS-computation of geo-data, the paper outlines
preliminarily a common field of study, namely that of cybernetic geography, or just
âcyber-geography) owing to the principal similarities with second order cybernetics.
Relating these geographical cosmologies to some of Scienceâs dominant, historical
perceptions of the exploring and appropriating of Nature as an âinventory of
knowledgeâ, the article seeks to identify some basic ontological and epistemological
dimensions of cybernetic geography and visualization in modern cartography.
The points made is that a generalized notion of visualization understood as the use of
maps, or more precisely as cybergeographic GIS-thinking seems necessary as an
epistemological as well as a methodological prerequisite to scientific knowledge in
cybergeography. Moreover do these generalized concept seem to lead to a
displacement of the positions traditionally held by the scientist and lay-man citizen,
that is not only in respect of the perception of the matter studied, i.e. the field of
geography, but also of the manner in which the scientist informs the lay-man citizen
in the course of action in the public participation in decision making; a displacement
that seems to lead to a more critical, or perhaps even quasi-scientific approach as
concerns the lay-man user
The analysis of facial beauty: an emerging area of research in pattern analysis
Much research presented recently supports the idea that the human perception of attractiveness is data-driven and largely irrespective of the perceiver. This suggests using pattern analysis techniques for beauty analysis. Several scientific papers on this subject are appearing in image processing, computer vision and pattern analysis contexts, or use techniques of these areas. The Role of ICT in Women's Empowerment in Rural\ud Bangladesh
Rural women in Bangladesh have limited access to resources and public\ud
spheres due to socio-cultural restrictions. Women suffer from severe\ud
discrimination, and it is thought this is heightened due to a lack of access to\ud
information. Information communication and technology (ICT) is a potential tool\ud
that can reach rural women and enrich their knowledge. This paper discusses\ud
womenâs empowerment in terms of perceptual change in rural villages in\ud
Bangladesh after ICT intervention has been introduced by Non-Government\ud
Organizations (NGOs). Since empowerment is a complex phenomenon to measure\ud
because of its multidimensional aspects and its relationship with time as a process,\ud
the methodology used in this research was an integration of qualitative and\ud
quantitative methods. Using a structured questionnaire, data was collected from\ud
women in two different villages where ICT projects have been introduced. The\ud
change in womenâs perception after using ICT was compared with changes in\ud
women who did not use ICT. The results indicate that ICT intervention changed\ud
womenâs perception in a positive direction in one village but it did not change in\ud
the other village
