Series : AIP Conference Proceedings, Vol. 1479This paper presents a derivative-free nonmonotone hybrid tabu search to compute a solution of overdetermined systems of inequalities and equalities through the global optimization of an appropriate merit function. The proposed algorithm combines global and local searches aiming to reduce computational effort. Preliminary numerical results show the effectiveness of the combined heuristic.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT

An inexact restoration derivative-free filter method for nonlinear programming

    Get PDF
An inexact restoration derivative-free filter method for nonlinear programming is introduced in this paper. Each iteration is composed of a restoration phase, which reduces a measure of infeasibility, and an optimization phase, which reduces the objective function. The restoration phase is solved using a derivative-free method for solving underdetermined nonlinear systems with bound constraints, developed previously by the authors. An alternative for solving the optimization phase is considered. Theoretical convergence results and some preliminary numerical experiments are presented.Departamento de Matemátic

Filter-based DIRECT method for constrained global optimization

    Get PDF
This paper presents a DIRECT-type method that uses a filter methodology to assure convergence to a feasible and optimal solution of nonsmooth and nonconvex constrained global optimization problems. The filter methodology aims to give priority to the selection of hyperrectangles with feasible center points, followed by those with infeasible and non-dominated center points and finally by those that have infeasible and dominated center points. The convergence properties of the algorithm are analyzed. Preliminary numerical experiments show that the proposed filter-based DIRECT algorithm gives competitive results when compared with other DIRECT-type methods. The authors would like to thank two anonymous referees and the Associate Editor for their valuable comments and suggestions to improve the paper. The new method uses the filter set concept to accept, at each iteration, a population of trial solutions whenever they improve constraint violation or objective function, relative to the current solutions. The preliminary numerical experiments with a wellknown benchmark set of engineering design problems show the effectiveness of the proposed method.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT

Derivative-free methods for mixed-integer nonsmooth constrained optimization

    Get PDF
In this paper, we consider mixed-integer nonsmooth constrained optimization problems whose objective/constraint functions are available only as the output of a black-box zeroth-order oracle (i.e., an oracle that does not provide derivative information) and we propose a new derivative-free linesearch-based algorithmic framework to suitably handle those problems. We first describe a scheme for bound constrained problems that combines a dense sequence of directions (to handle the nonsmoothness of the objective function) with primitive directions (to handle discrete variables). Then, we embed an exact penalty approach in the scheme to suitably manage nonlinear (possibly nonsmooth) constraints. We analyze the global convergence properties of the proposed algorithms toward stationary points and we report the results of an extensive numerical experience on a set of mixed-integer test problems

Descent methods with linesearch in the presence of perturbations

    Get PDF
AbstractWe consider the class of descent algorithms for unconstrained optimization with an Armijo-type stepsize rule in the case when the gradient of the objective function is computed inexactly. An important novel feature in our theoretical analysis is that perturbations associated with the gradient are not assumed to be relatively small or to tend to zero in the limit (as a practical matter, we expect them to be reasonably small, so that a meaningful approximate solution can be obtained). This feature makes our analysis applicable to various difficult problems encounted in practice. We propose a modified Armijo-type rule for computing the stepsize which guarantees that the algorithm obtains a reasonable approximate solution. Furthermore, if perturbations are small relative to the size of the gradient, then our algorithm retains all the standard convergence properties of descent methods

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)This work takes advantage of the spectral projected gradient direction within the inexact restoration framework to address nonlinear optimization problems with nonconvex constraints. The proposed strategy includes a convenient handling of the constraints, together with nonmonotonic features to speed up convergence. The numerical performance is assessed by experiments with hard-spheres problems, pointing out that the inexact restoration framework provides an adequate environment for the extension of the spectral projected gradient method for general nonlinearly constrained optimization.31316281652Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)CNPq [E-26/171.164/2003 - APQ1]FAPESP [01/04597-4, 06/53768-0

Active-set strategy in Powell's method for optimization without derivatives

    Get PDF
In this article we present an algorithm for solving bound constrained optimization problems without derivatives based on Powell's method for derivative-free optimization. First we consider the unconstrained optimization problem. At each iteration a quadratic interpolation model of the objective function is constructed around the current iterate and this model is minimized to obtain a new trial point. The whole process is embedded within a trust-region framework. Our algorithm uses infinity norm instead of the Euclidean norm and we solve a box constrained quadratic subproblem using an active-set strategy to explore faces of the box. Therefore, a bound constrained optimization algorithm is easily extended. We compare our implementation with NEWUOA and BOBYQA, Powell's algorithms for unconstrained and bound constrained derivative free optimization respectively. Numerical experiments show that, in general, our algorithm require less functional evaluations than Powell's algorithms.
