Exploring the Relationship Between a ‘Facebook Group’ and Face-to-Face Interactions in ‘Weak-Tie’ Residential Communities

    Get PDF
Using Facebook Groups to connect otherwise anonymous people that live in a single urban development is a relatively new phenomenon. Within residential developments there are a number of common management and performance issues experienced by many isolated inhabitants that are identified through building performance evaluation studies. Facebook is a ubiquitous social network tool and powerful communication platform, particularly popular among young adults. This paper explores the use of Facebook in relation to management and performance issues in two cases of Facebook Group usage within residential communities in the UK. Data was collected through longitudinal digital and physical visits to the residential communities and to the Facebook Group sites. Findings are presented in relation to home learning, site/neighbourhood and self-organising initiatives. We propose that weak-tie residential communities can develop collective efficacy and work together for the overall good of the residential development through communicating on a Facebook Group. This helps to improve the physical environment, facilitating further collective action. There is a clear overlap between social media narrative and the physical experience of daily life, which can help to empower residents

Internal Factors within Entrepreneurs that Influence the Acceptance and Use of Social Commerce among SMEs in Malaysia

Current technological advances, particularly in information and communications technology (ICT) and social media have sparked a phenomenon in the business world. The existence of social commerce (s-commerce), which is a combination of e-commerce and social media, has opened up greater opportunities for SMEs in Malaysia. The use of s-commerce as a medium for marketing and buying and selling is capable of helping SMEs to increase the sales and profitability of their businesses. However, according to studies conducted by SME Corp Malaysia, the usage of e-commerce and social media is still low. Attitude and self-efficacy are variables that are often used in studies related to entrepreneurs and their intention to accept a new business innovation or technology. Therefore, this study was undertaken to identify the internal factors within entrepreneurs, namely attitude and self-efficacy, which influence the acceptance and use of s-commerce among SMEs in Malaysia.

UNDERSTANDING USERS’ WILLINGNESS TO REPORT ONLINE HARASSMENT ON SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES: THE ROLE OF EFFICACY

    Get PDF
Online harassment is an emerging global societal problem, with its pervasiveness and persistence creating long-lasting adverse psychological consequences to victims. While many social networking sites (SNSs) have started launching online reporting systems to combat online harassment, surprisingly, little empirical research has examined users’ willingness to use the system for reporting online harassment. In this study, we propose a research model explaining the role of efficacy in using the online reporting system of SNSs to report online harassment. We expect that the results of this study make significant contributions to research and practice

In the digital era nowadays, social media has become a central part that cannot be separated from adolescents' daily lives. This can have a positive or negative impact, depending on adolescents' online resilience, namely the ability to survive in difficult, dangerous, and risky situations in the online world. This study aimed to analyze the influence of parenting style, friendship quality, and social media self-efficacy on adolescent online resilience. This study used an explanatory design located in Bogor City, West Java. This study involved 224 adolescents selected based on a purposive sampling technique, with the criteria being 15-18 years old, having complete parents and living together, and using social media. Data obtained through self-reporting using online questionnaires are then processed and analyzed using descriptive analysis and multiple linear regression tests on the SPSS 25.0 program. The majority of parents apply authoritative parenting styles predominantly. More than half of adolescents have the quality of friendship, social media self-efficacy, and online resilience in the moderate category. The results showed that the quality of friendship and social media self-efficacy significantly affected adolescent online resilience

Exploring the efficacy of Facebook groups for collective occupant learning about using their homes

The need for quality learning about how to use a home has been an issue gradually emerging from building performance evaluation (BPE) studies carried out in occupied energy efficient homes (Brown & Cole, 2009; Day & Gunderson, 2014). The BPE gap between the internal environment control as intended by designers and the actual inhabitant practices is associated with unpredicted energy consumption and poor indoor air quality (Balvers et al., 2012). The key inhabitant related causes of the ‘performance gap’ are a discrepancy between user needs and design intentions, lack of user understanding and skills to interact with the available controls and insufficient maintenance. These findings indicate that modifying tacit home use practices, adjusting them to new, more technically advanced contexts, is still not sufficiently addressed by the current learning opportunities offered by the professional actors. This paper explores how self-organised closed Facebook Groups set up independently by the residents of two UK case study urban developments have become supportive environments for such learning

Background The number of people living with a long-term condition is increasing worldwide. Social media offers opportunities for patients to exchange information and experiences with others with the same condition, potentially leading to better self-management and improved patient outcomes, at minimal costs to health service providers. Objective This paper describes how an online network with a range of social media platforms was created, with the help of a group of patients with chronic kidney disease, and specialist professionals. The project evaluation considered whether information needs and health-related and social outcomes were met. Methods Longitudinal in-depth evaluation of the creation of the moderated network; observation of the use of the platforms; self-efficacy surveys (baseline and 6 months); semistructured interviews (at baseline and 6 months). Results 15 patients and professionals participated in the co-design of the network (hub), initially launched with 50 patients. Several platforms were needed to engage patients at different levels, and encourage generation of information, with the support of moderators. 14 separate patients participated in the evaluation. Satisfaction of information needs through social engagement improved self-efficacy (in 13 participants) with better self-care and management of illness. Social outcomes included seeking employment and an increase in social capital. Conclusion: An online network (hub) with several social media platforms helped patients with chronic kidney disease to manage their condition. Careful design with users resulted in a sustainable network with wider applicability across health and social care
