    Smart tourist information points by combining agents, semantics and AI techniques

    The tourism sector in the province of Teruel (Aragon, Spain) is increasing rapidly. Although the number of domestic and foreign tourists is continuously growing, there are some tourist attractions spread over a wide geographical area, which are only visited by a few people at specific times of the year. Additionally, having human tourist guides everywhere and speaking different languages is unfeasible. An integrated solution based on smart and interactive Embodied Conversational Agents (ECAs) tourist guides combined with ontologies would overcome this problem. This paper presents a smart tourist information points approach which gathers tourism information about Teruel, structured according to a novel lightweight ontology built on OWL (Ontology Web Language), known as TITERIA (Touristic Information of TEruel for Intelligent Agents). Our proposal, which combines TITERIA with the Maxine platform, is capable of responding appropriately to the users thanks to its Artificial Intelligence Modeling Language (AIML) database and the AI techniques added to Maxine. Preliminary results indicate that our prototype is able to inform users about interesting topics, as well as to propose other related information, allowing them to acquire a complete information about any issue.     Building multi-domain conversational systems from single domain resources

    Current Advances In The Development Of Mobile And Smart Devices Have Generated A Growing Demand For Natural Human-Machine Interaction And Favored The Intelligent Assistant Metaphor, In Which A Single Interface Gives Access To A Wide Range Of Functionalities And Services. Conversational Systems Constitute An Important Enabling Technology In This Paradigm. However, They Are Usually Defined To Interact In Semantic-Restricted Domains In Which Users Are Offered A Limited Number Of Options And Functionalities. The Design Of Multi-Domain Systems Implies That A Single Conversational System Is Able To Assist The User In A Variety Of Tasks. In This Paper We Propose An Architecture For The Development Of Multi-Domain Conversational Systems That Allows: (1) Integrating Available Multi And Single Domain Speech Recognition And Understanding Modules, (2) Combining Available System In The Different Domains Implied So That It Is Not Necessary To Generate New Expensive Resources For The Multi-Domain System, (3) Achieving Better Domain Recognition Rates To Select The Appropriate Interaction Management Strategies.     Personalization in cultural heritage: the road travelled and the one ahead

    Over the last 20 years, cultural heritage has been a favored domain for personalization research. For years, researchers have experimented with the cutting edge technology of the day; now, with the convergence of internet and wireless technology, and the increasing adoption of the Web as a platform for the publication of information, the visitor is able to exploit cultural heritage material before, during and after the visit, having different goals and requirements in each phase. However, cultural heritage sites have a huge amount of information to present, which must be filtered and personalized in order to enable the individual user to easily access it. Personalization of cultural heritage information requires a system that is able to model the user (e.g., interest, knowledge and other personal characteristics), as well as contextual aspects, select the most appropriate content, and deliver it in the most suitable way. It should be noted that achieving this result is extremely challenging in the case of first-time users, such as tourists who visit a cultural heritage site for the first time (and maybe the only time in their life). In addition, as tourism is a social activity, adapting to the individual is not enough because groups and communities have to be modeled and supported as well, taking into account their mutual interests, previous mutual experience, and requirements. How to model and represent the user(s) and the context of the visit and how to reason with regard to the information that is available are the challenges faced by researchers in personalization of cultural heritage. Notwithstanding the effort invested so far, a definite solution is far from being reached, mainly because new technology and new aspects of personalization are constantly being introduced. This article surveys the research in this area. Starting from the earlier systems, which presented cultural heritage information in kiosks, it summarizes the evolution of personalization techniques in museum web sites, virtual collections and mobile guides, until recent extension of cultural heritage toward the semantic and social web. The paper concludes with current challenges and points out areas where future research is needed

    A context aware recommender system for tourism with ambient intelligence

    Recommender system (RS) holds a significant place in the area of the tourism sector. The major factor of trip planning is selecting relevant Points of Interest (PoI) from tourism domain. The RS system supposed to collect information from user behaviors, personality, preferences and other contextual information. This work is mainly focused on user’s personality, preferences and analyzing user psychological traits. The work is intended to improve the user profile modeling, exposing relationship between user personality and PoI categories and find the solution in constraint satisfaction programming (CSP). It is proposed the architecture according to ambient intelligence perspective to allow the best possible tourist place to the end-user. The key development of this RS is representing the model in CSP and optimizing the problem. We implemented our system in Minizinc solver with domain restrictions represented by user preferences. The CSP allowed user preferences to guide the system toward finding the optimal solutions; RESUMO O sistema de recomendação (RS) detém um lugar significativo na área do sector do turismo. O principal fator do planeamento de viagens é selecionar pontos de interesse relevantes (PoI) do domínio do turismo. O sistema de recomendação (SR) deve recolher informações de comportamentos, personalidade, preferências e outras informações contextuais do utilizador. Este trabalho centra-se principalmente na personalidade, preferências do utilizador e na análise de traços fisiológicos do utilizador. O trabalho tem como objetivo melhorar a modelação do perfil do utilizador, expondo a relação entre a personalidade deste e as categorias dos POI, assim como encontrar uma solução com programação por restrições (CSP). Propõe-se a arquitetura de acordo com a perspetiva do ambiente inteligente para conseguir o melhor lugar turístico possível para o utilizador final. A principal contribuição deste SR é representar o modelo como CSP e tratá-lo como problema de otimização. Implementámos o nosso sistema com o solucionador em Minizinc com restrições de domínio representadas pelas preferências dos utilizadores.     Movement Analytics: Current Status, Application to Manufacturing, and Future Prospects from an AI Perspective

    Data-driven decision making is becoming an integral part of manufacturing companies. Data is collected and commonly used to improve efficiency and produce high quality items for the customers. IoT-based and other forms of object tracking are an emerging tool for collecting movement data of objects/entities (e.g. human workers, moving vehicles, trolleys etc.) over space and time. Movement data can provide valuable insights like process bottlenecks, resource utilization, effective working time etc. that can be used for decision making and improving efficiency. Turning movement data into valuable information for industrial management and decision making requires analysis methods. We refer to this process as movement analytics. The purpose of this document is to review the current state of work for movement analytics both in manufacturing and more broadly. We survey relevant work from both a theoretical perspective and an application perspective. From the theoretical perspective, we put an emphasis on useful methods from two research areas: machine learning, and logic-based knowledge representation. We also review their combinations in view of movement analytics, and we discuss promising areas for future development and application. Furthermore, we touch on constraint optimization. From an application perspective, we review applications of these methods to movement analytics in a general sense and across various industries. We also describe currently available commercial off-the-shelf products for tracking in manufacturing, and we overview main concepts of digital twins and their applications

    Context-aware Plan Repair in Environments shared by Multiple Agents

    [ES] La monitorización de la ejecución de un plan es crucial para un agente autónomo que realiza su labor en un entorno dinámico, pues influye en su capacidad de reaccionar ante los cambios. Mientras ejecuta su plan puede sufrir un fallo y, en su esfuerzo por solucionarlo, puede interferir sin saberlo con otros agentes que operan en su mismo entorno. Por otra parte, para actuar racionalmente es necesario que el agente sea consciente del contexto y pueda recopilar y ampliar su información a partir de lo que percibe para poder compensar su conocimiento previo parcial o incorrecto del problema y lograr el mejor resultado posible ante las nuevas situaciones que aparecen. El trabajo realizado en esta tesis permite a los agentes autónomos ejecutar sus planes en un entorno dinámico y adaptarse a eventos inesperados y circunstancias desconocidas. Pueden utilizar su percepción del contexto para proporcionar respuestas deliberativas conscientes y ser capaces así de aprovechar las oportunidades que surgen o reparar los fallos sin perturbar a otros agentes. Este trabajo se centra en el desarrollo de una arquitectura independiente del dominio capaz de manejar las necesidades de agentes con este tipo de comportamiento autónomo. Los tres pilares de la arquitectura propuesta los forman el sistema inteligente para la simulación de la ejecución en entornos dinámicos, la adquisición de conocimiento consciente del contexto para ampliar la base de datos del agente y la reparación de planes ante fallos u oportunidades tratando de interferir lo mínimo con los planes de otros agentes. El sistema inteligente de simulación de la ejecución permite al agente representar el plan en una línea de tiempo, actualizar periódicamente su estado interno con información del mundo real y disparar nuevos eventos en momentos concretos. Los eventos se procesan en el contexto del plan; si se detecta un error, el simulador reformula el problema de planificación, invoca de nuevo al planificador y reanuda la ejecución. El simulador es una aplicación de consola y ofrece una interfaz gráfica diseñada específicamente para una aplicación inteligente de turismo. El módulo de adquisición de conocimiento sensible al contexto utiliza operaciones semánticas para aumentar dinámicamente la lista predefinida de tipos de objetos de la tarea de planificación con nuevos tipos relevantes. Esto permite que el agente sea consciente de su entorno, enriquezca el modelo de su tarea y pueda razonar a partir de un conocimiento incompleto. Con todo esto se consigue potenciar la autonomía del sistema y la conciencia del contexto. La novedosa estrategia de reparación de planes le permite a un agente reparar su plan al detectar un fallo de manera responsable con el resto de agentes que comparten su mismo entorno de ejecución. El agente utiliza una nueva métrica, el compromiso del plan, como función heurística para guiar la búsqueda hacia un plan solución comprometido con el plan original, en el sentido de que se trata de respetar los compromisos adquiridos con otros agentes al mismo tiempo que se alcanzan los objetivos originales. En consecuencia, la comunidad de agentes sufrirá menos fallos por cambios bruscos en el entorno o requerirá menos tiempo para ejecutar las acciones correctoras si el fallo es inevitable. Estos tres módulos han sido desarrollados y evaluados en varias aplicaciones como un asistente turístico, una agencia de reparación de electrodomésticos y un asistente del hogar.[CA] El monitoratge de l'execució d'un pla és crucial per a un agent autònom que realitza la seua labor en un entorn dinàmic, perquè influeix en la seua capacitat de reaccionar davant els canvis. Mentre executa el seu pla pot patir una fallada i, en el seu esforç per solucionar-lo, pot interferir sense saber-ho amb altres agents que operen en el seu mateix entorn. D'altra banda, per a actuar racionalment és necessari que l'agent siga conscient del context i puga recopilar i ampliar la seua informació a partir del que percep per a poder compensar el seu coneixement previ parcial o incorrecte del problema i aconseguir el millor resultat possible davant les noves situacions que apareixen. El treball realitzat en aquesta tesi permet als agents autònoms executar els seus plans en un entorn dinàmic i adaptar-se a esdeveniments inesperats i circumstàncies desconegudes. Poden utilitzar la seua percepció del context per a proporcionar respostes deliberatives conscients i ser capaces així d'aprofitar les oportunitats que sorgeixen o reparar les fallades sense pertorbar a altres agents. Aquest treball se centra en el desenvolupament d'una arquitectura independent del domini capaç de manejar les necessitats d'agents amb aquesta mena de comportament autònom. Els tres pilars de l'arquitectura proposada els formen el sistema intel·ligent per a la simulació de l'execució en entorns dinàmics, l'adquisició de coneixement conscient del context per a ampliar la base de dades de l'agent i la reparació de plans davant fallades o oportunitats tractant d'interferir el mínim amb els plans d'altres agents. El mòdul d'adquisició de coneixement sensible al context utilitza operacions semàntiques per a augmentar dinàmicament la llista predefinida de tipus d'objectes de la tasca de planificació amb nous tipus rellevants. Això permet que l'agent siga conscient del seu entorn, enriquisca el model de la seua tasca i puga raonar a partir d'un coneixement incomplet. Amb tot això s'aconsegueix potenciar l'autonomia del sistema i la consciència del context. La nova estratègia de reparació de plans li permet a un agent reparar el seu pla en detectar una fallada de manera responsable amb la resta d'agents que comparteixen el seu mateix entorn d'execució. L'agent utilitza una nova mètrica, el compromís del pla, com a funció heurística per a guiar la cerca cap a un pla solució compromés amb el pla original, en el sentit que es tracta de respectar els compromisos adquirits amb altres agents al mateix temps que s'aconsegueixen els objectius originals. En conseqüència, la comunitat d'agents patirà menys fallades per canvis bruscos en l'entorn o requerirà menys temps per a executar les accions correctores si la fallada és inevitable. Aquests tres mòduls han sigut desenvolupats i avaluats en diverses aplicacions com un assistent turístic, una agència de reparació d'electrodomèstics i un assistent de la llar.[EN] Execution Monitoring is crucial for the success of an autonomous agent executing a plan in a dynamic environment as it influences its ability to react to changes. While executing its plan in a dynamic world, it may suffer a failure and, in its endeavour to fix the problem, it may unknowingly disrupt other agents operating in the same environment. Additionally, being rational requires the agent to be context-aware, gather information and extend what is known from what is perceived to compensate for partial or incorrect prior knowledge and achieve the best possible outcome in various novel situations. The work carried out in this PhD thesis allows the autonomous agents executing a plan in a dynamic environment to adapt to unexpected events and unfamiliar circumstances, utilise their perception of context and provide context-aware deliberative responses for seizing an opportunity or repairing a failure without disrupting other agents. This work is focused on developing a domain-independent architecture capable of handling the requirements of such autonomous behaviour. The architecture pillars are the intelligent system for execution simulation in a dynamic environment, the context-aware knowledge acquisition for planning applications and the plan commitment repair. The intelligent system for execution simulation in a dynamic environment allows the agent to transform the plan into a timeline, periodically update its internal state with real-world information and create timed events. Events are processed in the context of the plan; if a failure occurs, the simulator reformulates the planning problem, reinvokes a planner and resumes the execution. The simulator is a console application and has a GUI designed specifically for smart tourism. The context-aware knowledge acquisition module utilises semantic operations to dynamically augment the predefined list of object types of the planning task with relevant new object types. This allows the agent to be context-aware of the environment and the task and reason with incomplete knowledge, boosting the system's autonomy and context-awareness. The novel plan commitment repair strategy among multiple agents sharing the same execution environment allows the agent to repair its plan responsibly when a failure is detected. The agent utilises a new metric, plan commitment, as a heuristic to guide the search for the most committed repair plan to the original plan from the perspective of commitments made to other agents whilst achieving the original goals. Consequently, the community of agents will suffer fewer failures due to the sudden changes or will have less lost time if the failure is inevitable.     Development of Context-Aware Recommenders of Sequences of Touristic Activities

    En els últims anys, els sistemes de recomanació s'han fet omnipresents a la xarxa. Molts serveis web, inclosa la transmissió de pel·lícules, la cerca web i el comerç electrònic, utilitzen sistemes de recomanació per facilitar la presa de decisions. El turisme és una indústria molt representada a la xarxa. Hi ha diversos serveis web (e.g. TripAdvisor, Yelp) que es beneficien de la integració de sistemes recomanadors per ajudar els turistes a explorar destinacions turístiques. Això ha augmentat la investigació centrada en la millora dels recomanadors turístics per resoldre els principals problemes als quals s'enfronten. Aquesta tesi proposa nous algorismes per a sistemes recomanadors turístics que aprenen les preferències dels turistes a partir dels seus missatges a les xarxes socials per suggerir una seqüència d'activitats turístiques que s'ajustin a diversos contextes i incloguin activitats afins. Per aconseguir-ho, proposem mètodes per identificar els turistes a partir de les seves publicacions a Twitter, identificant les activitats experimentades en aquestes publicacions i perfilant turistes similars en funció dels seus interessos, informació contextual i períodes d'activitat. Aleshores, els perfils d'usuari es combinen amb un algorisme de mineria de regles d'associació per capturar relacions implícites entre els punts d'interès de cada perfil. Finalment, es fa un rànquing de regles i un procés de selecció d'un conjunt d'activitats recomanables. Es va avaluar la precisió de les recomanacions i l'efecte del perfil d'usuari. A més, ordenem el conjunt d'activitats mitjançant un algorisme multi-objectiu per enriquir l'experiència turística. També realitzem una segona fase d'anàlisi dels fluxos turístics a les destinacions que és beneficiós per a les organitzacions de gestió de destinacions, que volen entendre la mobilitat turística. En general, els mètodes i algorismes proposats en aquesta tesi es mostren útils en diversos aspectes dels sistemes de recomanació turística.En los últimos años, los sistemas de recomendación se han vuelto omnipresentes en la web. Muchos servicios web, incluida la transmisión de películas, la búsqueda en la web y el comercio electrónico, utilizan sistemas de recomendación para ayudar a la toma de decisiones. El turismo es una industria altament representada en la web. Hay varios servicios web (e.g. TripAdvisor, Yelp) que se benefician de la inclusión de sistemas recomendadores para ayudar a los turistas a explorar destinos turísticos. Esto ha aumentado la investigación centrada en mejorar los recomendadores turísticos y resolver los principales problemas a los que se enfrentan. Esta tesis propone nuevos algoritmos para sistemas recomendadores turísticos que aprenden las preferencias de los turistas a partir de sus mensajes en redes sociales para sugerir una secuencia de actividades turísticas que se alinean con diversos contextos e incluyen actividades afines. Para lograr esto, proponemos métodos para identificar a los turistas a partir de sus publicaciones en Twitter, identificar las actividades experimentadas en estas publicaciones y perfilar turistas similares en función de sus intereses, contexto información y periodos de actividad. Luego, los perfiles de usuario se combinan con un algoritmo de minería de reglas de asociación para capturar relaciones entre los puntos de interés que aparecen en cada perfil. Finalmente, un proceso de clasificación de reglas y selección de actividades produce un conjunto de actividades recomendables. Se evaluó la precisión de las recomendaciones y el efecto de la elaboración de perfiles de usuario. Ordenamos además el conjunto de actividades utilizando un algoritmo multi-objetivo para enriquecer la experiencia turística. También llevamos a cabo un análisis de los flujos turísticos en los destinos, lo que es beneficioso para las organizaciones de gestión de destinos, que buscan entender la movilidad turística. En general, los métodos y algoritmos propuestos en esta tesis se muestran útiles en varios aspectos de los sistemas de recomendación turística.In recent years, recommender systems have become ubiquitous on the web. Many web services, including movie streaming, web search and e-commerce, use recommender systems to aid human decision-making. Tourism is one industry that is highly represented on the web. There are several web services (e.g. TripAdvisor, Yelp) that benefit from integrating recommender systems to aid tourists in exploring tourism destinations. This has increased research focused on improving tourism recommender systems and solving the main issues they face. This thesis proposes new algorithms for tourism recommender systems that learn tourist preferences from their social media data to suggest a sequence of touristic activities that align with various contexts and include affine activities. To accomplish this, we propose methods for identifying tourists from their frequent Twitter posts, identifying the activities experienced in these posts, and profiling similar tourists based on their interests, contextual information, and activity periods. User profiles are then combined with an association rule mining algorithm for capturing implicit relationships between points of interest apparent in each profile. Finally, a rule ranking and activity selection process produces a set of recommendable activities. The recommendations were evaluated for accuracy and the effect of user profiling. We further order the set of activities using a multi-objective algorithm to enrich the tourist experience. We also carry out a second-stage analysis of tourist flows at destinations which is beneficial to destination management organisations seeking to understand tourist mobility. Overall, the methods and algorithms proposed in this thesis are shown to be useful in various aspects of tourism recommender systems
