    Technical Report on: Tripedal Dynamic Gaits for a Quadruped Robot

    A vast number of applications for legged robots entail tasks in complex, dynamic environments. But these environments put legged robots at high risk for limb damage. This paper presents an empirical study of fault tolerant dynamic gaits designed for a quadrupedal robot suffering from a single, known ``missing'' limb. Preliminary data suggests that the featured gait controller successfully anchors a previously developed planar monopedal hopping template in the three-legged spatial machine.     Motion Planning and Control of Dynamic Humanoid Locomotion

    Inspired by human, humanoid robots has the potential to become a general-purpose platform that lives along with human. Due to the technological advances in many field, such as actuation, sensing, control and intelligence, it finally enables humanoid robots to possess human comparable capabilities. However, humanoid locomotion is still a challenging research field. The large number of degree of freedom structure makes the system difficult to coordinate online. The presence of various contact constraints and the hybrid nature of locomotion tasks make the planning a harder problem to solve. Template model anchoring approach has been adopted to bridge the gap between simple model behavior and the whole-body motion of humanoid robot. Control policies are first developed for simple template models like Linear Inverted Pendulum Model (LIPM) or Spring Loaded Inverted Pendulum(SLIP), the result controlled behaviors are then been mapped to the whole-body motion of humanoid robot through optimization-based task-space control strategies. Whole-body humanoid control framework has been verified on various contact situations such as unknown uneven terrain, multi-contact scenarios and moving platform and shows its generality and versatility. For walking motion, existing Model Predictive Control approach based on LIPM has been extended to enable the robot to walk without any reference foot placement anchoring. It is kind of discrete version of \u201cwalking without thinking\u201d. As a result, the robot could achieve versatile locomotion modes such as automatic foot placement with single reference velocity command, reactive stepping under large external disturbances, guided walking with small constant external pushing forces, robust walking on unknown uneven terrain, reactive stepping in place when blocked by external barrier. As an extension of this proposed framework, also to increase the push recovery capability of the humanoid robot, two new configurations have been proposed to enable the robot to perform cross-step motions. For more dynamic hopping and running motion, SLIP model has been chosen as the template model. Different from traditional model-based analytical approach, a data-driven approach has been proposed to encode the dynamics of the this model. A deep neural network is trained offline with a large amount of simulation data based on the SLIP model to learn its dynamics. The trained network is applied online to generate reference foot placements for the humanoid robot. Simulations have been performed to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed approach in generating bio-inspired and robust running motions.     RLOC: Terrain-Aware Legged Locomotion using Reinforcement Learning and Optimal Control

    We present a unified model-based and data-driven approach for quadrupedal planning and control to achieve dynamic locomotion over uneven terrain. We utilize on-board proprioceptive and exteroceptive feedback to map sensory information and desired base velocity commands into footstep plans using a reinforcement learning (RL) policy trained in simulation over a wide range of procedurally generated terrains. When ran online, the system tracks the generated footstep plans using a model-based controller. We evaluate the robustness of our method over a wide variety of complex terrains. It exhibits behaviors which prioritize stability over aggressive locomotion. Additionally, we introduce two ancillary RL policies for corrective whole-body motion tracking and recovery control. These policies account for changes in physical parameters and external perturbations. We train and evaluate our framework on a complex quadrupedal system, ANYmal version B, and demonstrate transferability to a larger and heavier robot, ANYmal C, without requiring retraining.Comment: 19 pages, 15 figures, 6 tables, 1 algorithm, submitted to T-RO; under revie

    DribbleBot: Dynamic Legged Manipulation in the Wild

    DribbleBot (Dexterous Ball Manipulation with a Legged Robot) is a legged robotic system that can dribble a soccer ball under the same real-world conditions as humans (i.e., in-the-wild). We adopt the paradigm of training policies in simulation using reinforcement learning and transferring them into the real world. We overcome critical challenges of accounting for variable ball motion dynamics on different terrains and perceiving the ball using body-mounted cameras under the constraints of onboard computing. Our results provide evidence that current quadruped platforms are well-suited for studying dynamic whole-body control problems involving simultaneous locomotion and manipulation directly from sensory observations.Comment: To appear at the IEEE Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA), 2023.     Design a Fall Recovery Strategy for a Wheel-Legged Quadruped Robot Using Stability Feature Space

    In this paper, we introduced a conceptual analysis to select stability features when performing predefined and precise motions on robots. By analyzing the different stable poses named features and the possible transitions towards different ones, the introduced concept allows to design more predictable and suitable motions when performing particular tasks. As an example of how the concept can be applied we use it on the fall recovery of the quadruped robot CENTAURO. This robot, which is equipped with a custom hybrid wheel-legged mobility system, have good intrinsic stability as other quadrupeds. However, the characteristics of the rough terrains where it might be deployed require complex maneuvers to cope with possible strong disturbances. To prevent and more importantly recover from falls, realignment of postural responses will not be adequate, and effective recovery procedures should be developed. This paper introduces the details of how the presented conceptual analysis provides and an effective fall recovery routine for CENTAURO based on a state machine. The performance of the proposed approach is evaluated with extensive simulation trials using the dynamic model of the CENTAURO robot showing good effectiveness in recovering the robot after fall on flat and inclined surfaces

    Legged locomotion over irregular terrains: State of the art of human and robot performance

    Legged robotic technologies have moved out of the lab to operate in real environments, characterized by a wide variety of unpredictable irregularities and disturbances, all this in close proximity with humans. Demonstrating the ability of current robots to move robustly and reliably in these conditions is becoming essential to prove their safe operation. Here, we report an in-depth literature review aimed at verifying the existence of common or agreed protocols and metrics to test the performance of legged system in realistic environments. We primarily focused on three types of robotic technologies, i.e., hexapods, quadrupeds and bipeds. We also included a comprehensive overview on human locomotion studies, being it often considered the gold standard for performance, and one of the most important sources of bioinspiration for legged machines. We discovered that very few papers have rigorously studied robotic locomotion under irregular terrain conditions. On the contrary, numerous studies have addressed this problem on human gait, being nonetheless of highly heterogeneous nature in terms of experimental design. This lack of agreed methodology makes it challenging for the community to properly assess, compare and predict the performance of existing legged systems in real environments. On the one hand, this work provides a library of methods, metrics and experimental protocols, with a critical analysis on the limitations of the current approaches and future promising directions. On the other hand, it demonstrates the existence of an important lack of benchmarks in the literature, and the possibility of bridging different disciplines, e.g., the human and robotic, towards the definition of standardized procedure that will boost not only the scientific development of better bioinspired solutions, but also their market uptake

    Disturbance Detection, Identification, and Recovery by Gait Transition in Legged Robots

    We present a framework for detecting, identifying, and recovering within stride from faults and other leg contact disturbances encountered by a walking hexapedal robot. Detection is achieved by means of a software contactevent sensor with no additional sensing hardware beyond the commercial actuators’ standard shaft encoders. A simple finite state machine identifies disturbances as due either to an expected ground contact, a missing ground contact indicating leg fault, or an unexpected “wall” contact. Recovery proceeds as necessary by means of a recently developed topological gait transition coordinator. We demonstrate the efficacy of this system by presenting preliminary data arising from two reactive behaviors — wall avoidance and leg-break recovery. We believe that extensions of this framework will enable reactive behaviors allowing the robot to function with guarded autonomy under widely varying terrain and self-health conditions
