    Disturbance Observer has been one of the most widely used robust control tools since it was proposed in 1983. This paper introduces the origins of Disturbance Observer and presents a survey of the major results on Disturbance Observer-based robust control in the last thirty-five years. Furthermore, it explains the analysis and synthesis techniques of Disturbance Observer-based robust control for linear and nonlinear systems by using a unified framework.     Non-Linear Robust Observers For Systems With Non-Collocated Sensors And Actuators

    Challenges in controlling highly nonlinear systems are not limited to the development of sophisticated control algorithms that are tolerant to significant modeling imprecision and external disturbances. Additional challenges stem from the implementation of the control algorithm such as the availability of the state variables needed for the computation of the control signals, and the adverse effects induced by non-collocated sensors and actuators. The present work investigates the adverse effects of non-collocated sensors and actuators on the phase characteristics of flexible structures and the ensuing implications on the performance of structural controllers. Two closed-loop systems are considered and their phase angle contours have been generated as functions of the normalized sensor location and the excitation frequency. These contours were instrumental in the development of remedial actions for rendering structural controllers immune to the detrimental effects of non-collocated sensors and actuators. Moreover, the current work has focused on providing experimental validation for the robust performances of a self-tuning observer and a sliding mode observer. The observers are designed based on the variable structure systems theory and the self-tuning fuzzy logic scheme. Their robustness and self-tuning characteristics allow one to use an imprecise model of the system and eliminate the need for the extensive tuning associated with a fixed rule-based expert fuzzy inference system. The first phase of the experimental work was conducted in a controlled environment on a flexible spherical robotic manipulator whose natural frequencies are configuration-dependent. Both controllers have yielded accurate estimates of the required state variables in spite of significant modeling imprecision. The observers were also tested under a completely uncontrolled environment, which involves a 16-ft boat operating in open-water under different sea states. Such an experimental work necessitates the development of a supervisory control algorithm to perform PTP tasks, prescribed throttle arm and steering tasks, surge speed and heading tracking tasks, or recovery maneuvers. This system has been implemented herein to perform prescribed throttle arm and steering control tasks based on estimated rather than measured state variables. These experiments served to validate the observers in a completely uncontrolled environment and proved their viability as reliable techniques for providing accurate estimates for the required state variables

    Two dimensional agonistic control

    The conventional method of precise multiple-axis motion control entails use of a multiple axis positioning system with each axis carrying not only the workpiece but also the positioning system of the remaining axes. The resultant structure is heavy, sluggish, and expensive. An alternative positioning technique is being investigated in which the motion of the workpiece is controlled by pulling it with tendons, each of which has its own actuator. Since the actuators can be mounted on the base of the structure instead of being carried by motion system of the other axes, they can be relatively large and powerful without the need for a massive structure such as is found in a conventional motion control system. This method of control is given the appellation agonistic, based on the usages of the word suggesting tension or a contest. Agonistic control system can be used for low cost accurate positioning of workpiece. The control task can be moving the workpiece from one point to another point and kept there or tracking a given trajectory. While the workpiece moves, the tendons should be always kept in tension. In this thesis, the model of two dimensional agonistic control (in the case of tendons of infinite elastic modulus) is established. It leads to a nonlinear multi-variable control problem. Based on this nonlinear model, a full-state feedback control law is synthesized. It is composed of two parts. The first part is a feedforward control to cancel the nonlinear dynamics. The second part is a PD control term which requires velocity information. In the practice, velocity measurement may be contaminated by noise. In order of only using position measurement in the control law, a nonlinear observer is designed to provide the velocity information. Numerical simulation is performed to verify the ability of the proposed control law. In reality, the tendon has some elasticity. This finite elasticity, if not accounted for, can render the closed-loop system unstable. The investigation shows that the effect of elastic tendons can be compensated for by appropriately modifying the control law designed for inelastic tendons. In particular, the control law is synthesized using the singular perturbation method. It consists of a fast control and a slow control. The fast control is used to stablize the oscillations incurred by the finite elasticity of the tendon. The slow control drives the system to track the desired trajectory. Robustness of the controller is enhanced by using sliding mode control. In the chapter 4, the design of observer in the elastic case is addressed. Linear uncertain system theory is used. The observer is globally stable. The use of decentralized control scheme makes very simple the controller design and reduces the computational complexity. It is very useful for real time agonistic control. A design approach is presented for the decentralized control scheme. A simple linear second order model is used instead of complex nonlinear model used in centralized version. In this approach, the tension in each tendon is treated as disturbance, estimated by an observer, to be compensated

    Variable Structure and Ultimate Boundedness control and stabilization of flexible robotic systems

    In this thesis we study the control of two link light weight elastic manipulator in the presence of uncertainty. The control of flexible robotic arm with uncertainty such as variable payload, joint angle frictional torque etc., is an interesting and important problem; Here we consider control of joint angles and stabilization of the flexible modes caused by the manuever of robotic arm by two methods. These are: (i) Variable Structure control and (ii) Nonlinear Ultimate Boundedness control. Nonlinear Ultimate Boundedness control is a continuous control wherein the joint angle tracking error is uniformly ultimately bounded in the closed-loop system; Analytical derivations of these two schemes are presented. A control logic is included which switches the stabilizer when the joint angle trajectory enters a specified neighborhood of the terminal state; Extensive simulations were carried out for several conditions of uncertainty and the results are presented.     Sliding mode control of robotics systems actuated by pneumatic muscles.

    This dissertation is concerned with investigating robust approaches for the control of pneumatic muscle systems. Pneumatic muscle is a novel type of actuator. Besides having a high ratio of power to weight and flexible control of movement, it also exhibits many analogical behaviors to natural skeletal muscle, which makes them the ideal candidate for applications of anthropomorphic robotic systems. In this dissertation, a new phenomenological model of pneumatic muscle developed in the Human Sensory Feedback Laboratory at Wright Patterson Air Force Base is investigated. The closed loop stability of a one-link planar arm actuated by two pneumatic muscles using linear state feedback is proved. Robotic systems actuated by pneumatic muscles are time-varying and nonlinear due to load variations and uncertainties of system parameters caused by the effects of heat. Sliding mode control has the advantage that it can provide robust control performance in the presence of model uncertainties. Therefore, it is mainly utilized and further complemented with other control methods in this dissertation to design the appropriate controller to perform the tasks commanded by system operation. First, a sliding mode controller is successfully proposed to track the elbow angle with bounded error in a one-Joint limb system with pneumatic muscles in bicep/tricep configuration. Secondly, fuzzy control, which aims to dynamically adjust the sliding surface, is used along with sliding mode control. The so-called fuzzy sliding mode control method is applied to control the motion of the end-effector in a two-Joint planar arm actuated by four groups of pneumatic muscles. Through computer simulation, the fuzzy sliding mode control shows very good tracking accuracy superior to nonfuzzy sliding mode control. Finally, a two-joint planar arm actuated by four groups of pneumatic muscles operated in an assumed industrial environment is presented. Based on the model, an integral sliding mode control scheme is proposed as an ultimate solution to the control of systems actuated by pneumatic muscles. As the theoretical proof and computer simulations show, the integral sliding mode controller, with strong robustness to model uncertainties and external perturbations, is superior for performing the commanded control assignment. Based on the investigation in this dissertation, integral sliding mode control proposed here is a very promising robust control approach to handle systems actuated by pneumatic muscles

    Line-of-sight-stabilization and tracking control for inertial platforms

    Nowadays, line of sight stabilization and tracking using inertially stabilized platforms (ISPs) are still challenging engineering problems. With a growing demand for high-precision applications, more involved control techniques are necessary to achieve better performance. In this work, kinematic and dynamic models for a three degrees-of-freedom ISP are presented. These models are based in the vehicle-manipulator system (VMS) framework for modeling of robot manipulators operating in a mobile base (vehicles). The dynamic model follows the Euler-Lagrange formulation and is implemented by numeric simulations using the iterative Newton-Euler method. Two distinct control strategies for both stabilization and tracking are proposed: (i) computed torque control and (ii) sliding mode control using the recent SuperTwisting Algorithm (STA) combined with a High-Order Sliding Mode Observer (HOSMO). Simulations using data from a simulated vessel allow us to compare the performance of the computed torque controllers with respect to the commonly used P-PI controller. Besides, the results obtained for the sliding mode controllers indicate that the Super-Twisting algorithm offers ideal robustness to the vehicle motion disturbances and also to parametric uncertainties, resulting in a stabilization precision of approximately 0,8 mrad.Hoje em dia, a estabilização e o rastreamento da linha de visada utilizando plataformas inerciais continuam a constituir desafiadores problemas de engenharia. Com a crescente demanda por aplicações de alta precisão, técnicas de controle complexas são necessárias para atingir melhor desempenho. Neste trabalho, modelos cinemáticos e dinâmicos para uma plataforma mecânica de estabilização inercial são apresentados. Tais modelos se baseiam no formalismo para sistemas veículo-manipulator para a modelagem de manipuladores robóticos operando em uma base móvel (veículo). O modelo dinâmico apresentado segue a formulação analítica de Euler-Lagrange e é implementado em simulações numéricas através do método iterativo de Newton-Euler. Duas estratégias de controle distintas para estabilização e rastreamento são propostas: (i) controle por torque-computado e (ii) controle por modos deslizantes utilizando o recente algoritmo Super-Twisting combinado com um observador baseado em modos deslizantes de alta ordem. Simulações utilizando dados de movimentação de um navio simulado permitem comparar o desempenho dos controladores por torque computado em relação a um tipo comum de controlador linear utilizado na literatura: o P-PI. Além disso, os resultados obtidos para o controle por modos deslizantes permitem concluir que o algoritmo Super-Twisting apresenta rejeição ideal a perturbações provenientes do movimento do veículo e também a incertezas paramétricas, resultando em precisão de estabilização de aproximadamente 0,8 mrad

    Bio-inspired robotic control in underactuation: principles for energy efficacy, dynamic compliance interactions and adaptability.

    Biological systems achieve energy efficient and adaptive behaviours through extensive autologous and exogenous compliant interactions. Active dynamic compliances are created and enhanced from musculoskeletal system (joint-space) to external environment (task-space) amongst the underactuated motions. Underactuated systems with viscoelastic property are similar to these biological systems, in that their self-organisation and overall tasks must be achieved by coordinating the subsystems and dynamically interacting with the environment. One important question to raise is: How can we design control systems to achieve efficient locomotion, while adapt to dynamic conditions as the living systems do? In this thesis, a trajectory planning algorithm is developed for underactuated microrobotic systems with bio-inspired self-propulsion and viscoelastic property to achieve synchronized motion in an energy efficient, adaptive and analysable manner. The geometry of the state space of the systems is explicitly utilized, such that a synchronization of the generalized coordinates is achieved in terms of geometric relations along the desired motion trajectory. As a result, the internal dynamics complexity is sufficiently reduced, the dynamic couplings are explicitly characterised, and then the underactuated dynamics are projected onto a hyper-manifold. Following such a reduction and characterization, we arrive at mappings of system compliance and integrable second-order dynamics with the passive degrees of freedom. As such, the issue of trajectory planning is converted into convenient nonlinear geometric analysis and optimal trajectory parameterization. Solutions of the reduced dynamics and the geometric relations can be obtained through an optimal motion trajectory generator. Theoretical background of the proposed approach is presented with rigorous analysis and developed in detail for a particular example. Experimental studies are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. Towards compliance interactions with the environment, accurate modelling or prediction of nonlinear friction forces is a nontrivial whilst challenging task. Frictional instabilities are typically required to be eliminated or compensated through efficiently designed controllers. In this work, a prediction and analysis framework is designed for the self-propelled vibro-driven system, whose locomotion greatly relies on the dynamic interactions with the nonlinear frictions. This thesis proposes a combined physics-based and analytical-based approach, in a manner that non-reversible characteristic for static friction, presliding as well as pure sliding regimes are revealed, and the frictional limit boundaries are identified. Nonlinear dynamic analysis and simulation results demonstrate good captions of experimentally observed frictional characteristics, quenching of friction-induced vibrations and satisfaction of energy requirements. The thesis also performs elaborative studies on trajectory tracking. Control schemes are designed and extended for a class of underactuated systems with concrete considerations on uncertainties and disturbances. They include a collocated partial feedback control scheme, and an adaptive variable structure control scheme with an elaborately designed auxiliary control variable. Generically, adaptive control schemes using neural networks are designed to ensure trajectory tracking. Theoretical background of these methods is presented with rigorous analysis and developed in detail for particular examples. The schemes promote the utilization of linear filters in the control input to improve the system robustness.
