    PDMSkin – On-Skin Gestures with Printable Ultra-Stretchable Soft Electronic Second Skin

    Innovative enabling technologies are key drivers of human augmentation. In this paper, we explore a new, conductive, and configurable material made from Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) that is capillary doped with silver particles (Ag) using an immiscible secondary fluid to build ultra-stretchable, soft electronics. Bonding silver particles directly with PDMS enables inherently stretchable Ag-PDMS circuits. Compared to previous work, the reduced silver consumption creates significant advantages, e.g., better stretchability and lower costs. The secondary fluid ensures self-assembling conductivity networks. Sensors are 3D-printed ultra-thin (200%. Therefore, printed circuits can attach tightly onto the body. Due to biocompatibility, devices can be implanted (e.g., open wounds treatment). We present a proof of concept on-skin interface that uses the new material to provide six distinct input gestures. Our quantitative evaluation with ten participants shows that we can successfully classify the gestures with a low spatial-resolution circuit. With few training data and a gradient boosting classifier, we yield 83% overall accuracy. Our qualitative material study with twelve participants shows that usability and comfort are well perceived; however, the smooth but easy to adapt surface does not feel tissue-equivalent. For future work, the new material will likely serve to build robust and skin-like electronics

    Interactive skin through a social- sensory speculative lens

    This paper uses a speculative lens to explore the social and sensory trajectories of Interactive Skin, a class of skin-worn epidermal devices that augment the human body in ways that are significant for affective techno-touch. The paper presents and discusses the use of a speculative narrative on Interactive Skin futures produced through an exploratory research-collaboration with a Human–Computer Interaction (HCI) lab, combining data from speculative methods (cultural probe returns and a future-orientated workshop) with an ethnographic sensitivity to writing. The speculative narrative is in the form of a found archive of fictional fragments that are research provocations in their own right. We discuss their potentials, including the ability to foster interdisciplinary dialogue between social and HCI researchers and to agitate the socio-technological space of interactive skin futures, as well as their limitations. The paper concludes that a socially orientated speculative approach can provide useful insights on the interconnection between the senses, society, and technology in the context of emergent affective techno-touch technologies

    The Making of Meaning through Dyadic Haptic Affective Touch

    Despite the importance of touch in human-human relations, research in affective tactile practices is in its infancy, lacking in-depth understanding needed to inform the design of remote digital touch communication. This paper reports two qualitative studies that explore tactile affective communication in specific social contexts, and the bi-directional creation, sending and interpretation of digital touch messages using a purpose-built research tool, the Tactile Emoticon. The system comprises a pair of remotely connected mitts which enable users in different locations to communicate through tactile messages, by orchestrating duration and level of three haptic sensations: vibration, pressure and temperature. Qualitative analysis shows the nuanced ways in which 68 participants configured these elements to make meaning from touch messages they sent and received. It points to the affect and emotion of touch, its sensoriality and ambiguity, the significance of context, social norms and expectations of touch participants. Findings suggest key design considerations for digital touch communication, where the emphasis shifts from generating ‘recognizable touches’ to tools that allow people to shape their touches and establish common understanding about their meaning
