    Multimodal interaction: developing an interaction concept for a touchscreen incorporating tactile feedback

    The touchscreen, as an alternative user interface for applications that normally require mice and keyboards, has become more and more commonplace, showing up on mobile devices, on vending machines, on ATMs and in the control panels of machines in industry, where conventional input devices cannot provide intuitive, rapid and accurate user interaction with the content of the display. The exponential growth in processing power on the PC, together with advances in understanding human communication channels, has had a significant effect on the design of usable, human-factored interfaces on touchscreens, and on the number and complexity of applications available on touchscreens. Although computer-driven touchscreen interfaces provide programmable and dynamic displays, the absence of the expected tactile cues on the hard and static surfaces of conventional touchscreens is challenging interface design and touchscreen usability, in particular for distracting, low-visibility environments. Current technology allows the human tactile modality to be used in touchscreens. While the visual channel converts graphics and text unidirectionally from the computer to the end user, tactile communication features a bidirectional information flow to and from the user as the user perceives and acts on the environment and the system responds to changing contextual information. Tactile sensations such as detents and pulses provide users with cues that make selecting and controlling a more intuitive process. Tactile features can compensate for deficiencies in some of the human senses, especially in tasks which carry a heavy visual or auditory burden. In this study, an interaction concept for tactile touchscreens is developed with a view to employing the key characteristics of the human sense of touch effectively and efficiently, especially in distracting environments where vision is impaired and hearing is overloaded. As a first step toward improving the usability of touchscreens through the integration of tactile effects, different mechanical solutions for producing motion in tactile touchscreens are investigated, to provide a basis for selecting suitable vibration directions when designing tactile displays. Building on these results, design know-how regarding tactile feedback patterns is further developed to enable dynamic simulation of UI controls, in order to give users a sense of perceiving real controls on a highly natural touch interface. To study the value of adding tactile properties to touchscreens, haptically enhanced UI controls are then further investigated with the aim of mapping haptic signals to different usage scenarios to perform primary and secondary tasks with touchscreens. The findings of the study are intended for consideration and discussion as a guide to further development of tactile stimuli, haptically enhanced user interfaces and touchscreen applications

    Enhancing tele-operation - Investigating the effect of sensory feedback on performance

    The decline in the number of healthcare service providers in comparison to the growing numbers of service users prompts the development of technologies to improve the efficiency of healthcare services. One such technology which could offer support are assistive robots, remotely tele-operated to provide assistive care and support for older adults with assistive care needs and people living with disabilities. Tele-operation makes it possible to provide human-in-the-loop robotic assistance while also addressing safety concerns in the use of autonomous robots around humans. Unlike many other applications of robot tele-operation, safety is particularly significant as the tele-operated assistive robots will be used in close proximity to vulnerable human users. It is therefore important to provide as much information about the robot (and the robot workspace) as possible to the tele-operators to ensure safety, as well as efficiency. Since robot tele-operation is relatively unexplored in the context of assisted living, this thesis explores different feedback modalities that may be employed to communicate sensor information to tele-operators. The thesis presents research as it transitioned from identifying and evaluating additional feedback modalities that may be used to supplement video feedback, to exploring different strategies for communicating the different feedback modalities. Due to the fact that some of the sensors and feedback needed are not readily available, different design iterations were carried out to develop the necessary hardware and software for the studies carried out. The first human study was carried out to investigate the effect of feedback on tele-operator performance. Performance was measured in terms of task completion time, ease of use of the system, number of robot joint movements, and success or failure of the task. The effect of verbal feedback between the tele-operator and service users was also investigated. Feedback modalities have differing effects on performance metrics and as a result, the choice of optimal feedback may vary from task to task. Results show that participants preferred scenarios with verbal feedback relative to scenarios without verbal feedback, which also reflects in their performance. Gaze metrics from the study also showed that it may be possible to understand how tele-operators interact with the system based on their areas of interest as they carry out tasks. This findings suggest that such studies can be used to improve the design of tele-operation systems.The need for social interaction between the tele-operator and service user suggests that visual and auditory feedback modalities will be engaged as tasks are carried out. This further reduces the number of available sensory modalities through which information can be communicated to tele-operators. A wrist-worn Wi-Fi enabled haptic feedback device was therefore developed and a study was carried out to investigate haptic sensitivities across the wrist. Results suggest that different locations on the wrist have varying sensitivities to haptic stimulation with and without video distraction, duration of haptic stimulation, and varying amplitudes of stimulation. This suggests that dynamic control of haptic feedback can be used to improve haptic perception across the wrist, and it may also be possible to display more than one type of sensor data to tele-operators during a task. The final study carried out was designed to investigate if participants can differentiate between different types of sensor data conveyed through different locations on the wrist via haptic feedback. The effect of increased number of attempts on performance was also investigated. Total task completion time decreased with task repetition. Participants with prior gaming and robot experience had a more significant reduction in total task completion time when compared to participants without prior gaming and robot experience. Reduction in task completion time was noticed for all stages of the task but participants with additional feedback had higher task completion time than participants without supplementary feedback. Reduction in task completion time varied for different stages of the task. Even though gripper trajectory reduced with task repetition, participants with supplementary feedback had longer gripper trajectories than participants without supplementary feedback, while participants with prior gaming experience had shorter gripper trajectories than participants without prior gaming experience. Perceived workload was also found to reduce with task repetition but perceived workload was higher for participants with feedback reported higher perceived workload than participants without feedback. However participants without feedback reported higher frustration than participants without feedback.Results show that the effect of feedback may not be significant where participants can get necessary information from video feedback. However, participants were fully dependent on feedback when video feedback could not provide requisite information needed.The findings presented in this thesis have potential applications in healthcare, and other applications of robot tele-operation and feedback. Findings can be used to improve feedback designs for tele-operation systems to ensure safe and efficient tele-operation. The thesis also provides ways visual feedback can be used with other feedback modalities. The haptic feedback designed in this research may also be used to provide situational awareness for the visually impaired

    Cortical Diagnostics: Measuring Brain Health through Somatosensation

    Over the past several years, a number of unique quantitative tactile based sensory testing methods were designed with the intent of obtaining objective metrics that would be sensitive to alterations in cortical information processing. The design of these tasks was based on information obtained from neurophysiological studies of the nonhuman primate (NHP) cerebral sensory cortical response to a variety of modes of natural skin stimulation, and these NHP studies typically exhibit characteristics of cortical modularity, or cortical-cortical dynamics that occur between adjacent and near-adjacent assemblies of cortical neurons. The initial goal of these studies was to demonstrate cortical correlates of perception by comparing observations of stimulus evoked activity in primary somatosensory cortex of non-human primates, and a secondary goal was to demonstrate that these measures of sensory perception were altered in a predictable fashion with neurological insult. To date, observations consistent with systemic cortical alterations have been made in individuals with neurotrauma (concussion/TBI, stroke), neurodevelopmental disorders (Autism, ADHD, Tourette's, OCD) and chronic pain (migraine, fibromyalgia, VVS, TMJD, carpal tunnel syndrome). One unifying theme of these findings is the role that cortical modularity plays in sensory information processing and that when cortical modularity is disrupted, significant quantifiable deficits in sensory information processing can be detected.Doctor of Philosoph

    Interactive surfaces are a growing trend in many domains. As one possible manifestation of Mark Weiser’s vision of ubiquitous and disappearing computers in everywhere objects, we see touchsensitive screens in many kinds of devices, such as smartphones, tablet computers and interactive tabletops. More advanced concepts of these have been an active research topic for many years. This has also influenced automotive cockpit development: concept cars and recent market releases show integrated touchscreens, growing in size. To meet the increasing information and interaction needs, interactive surfaces offer context-dependent functionality in combination with a direct input paradigm. However, interfaces in the car need to be operable while driving. Distraction, especially visual distraction from the driving task, can lead to critical situations if the sum of attentional demand emerging from both primary and secondary task overextends the available resources. So far, a touchscreen requires a lot of visual attention since its flat surface does not provide any haptic feedback. There have been approaches to make direct touch interaction accessible while driving for simple tasks. Outside the automotive domain, for example in office environments, concepts for sophisticated handling of large displays have already been introduced. Moreover, technological advances lead to new characteristics for interactive surfaces by enabling arbitrary surface shapes. In cars, two main characteristics for upcoming interactive surfaces are largeness and shape. On the one hand, spatial extension is not only increasing through larger displays, but also by taking objects in the surrounding into account for interaction. On the other hand, the flatness inherent in current screens can be overcome by upcoming technologies, and interactive surfaces can therefore provide haptically distinguishable surfaces. This thesis describes the systematic exploration of large and shaped interactive surfaces and analyzes their potential for interaction while driving. Therefore, different prototypes for each characteristic have been developed and evaluated in test settings suitable for their maturity level. Those prototypes were used to obtain subjective user feedback and objective data, to investigate effects on driving and glance behavior as well as usability and user experience. As a contribution, this thesis provides an analysis of the development of interactive surfaces in the car. Two characteristics, largeness and shape, are identified that can improve the interaction compared to conventional touchscreens. The presented studies show that large interactive surfaces can provide new and improved ways of interaction both in driver-only and driver-passenger situations. Furthermore, studies indicate a positive effect on visual distraction when additional static haptic feedback is provided by shaped interactive surfaces. Overall, various, non-exclusively applicable, interaction concepts prove the potential of interactive surfaces for the use in automotive cockpits, which is expected to be beneficial also in further environments where visual attention needs to be focused on additional tasks.Der Einsatz von interaktiven OberflĂ€chen weitet sich mehr und mehr auf die unterschiedlichsten Lebensbereiche aus.     Safe and seamless transfer of control authority - exploring haptic shared control during handovers

    This research aimed at investigating the impact of lateral assistance systems on drivers' performance and behaviour during transitions from Highly Automated Driving (HAD). The thesis focused on non-critical transitions and analysed the differences between system and user-initiated transitions. Hence, two experiments were developed and conducted in driving simulators to address questions relating to how handover procedures, which provide varying levels of lateral assistance, affect drivers' performance and behaviour at different stages of the transition. In particular, it was investigated which type of assistance yields better results depending on who initiated the transition of control. Drivers were induced to be Out-Of-The-Loop (OOTL) during periods of HAD and then exposed to both system and user-initiated transitions. Results showed that after user-initiated transitions, drivers were generally more engaged with the steering task and the provided assistance was not helpful and, in some cases, caused steering conflicts and a comfort drop. On the contrary, after system-initiated transitions, drivers were not engaged with the steering control and were more prone to gaze wandering. Strong lateral assistance proved to be most beneficial within the first 5 seconds of the transition, when drivers were not committed to the steering control. The provision of assistance at an operational level, namely when drivers had to keep the lane centre, was not enough to ensure good performance at a tactical level. Drivers were able to cope with tactical tasks, presented as lane changes, only after around 10 seconds from the start of the transitions in both user and system initiated cases (Chapter 3 and Chapter 4). The introduction of non-continuous lateral assistance, used to trigger steering conflicts and, in turn, a faster steering engagement, did not yield particular benefits during user-initiated transitions but it might have triggered a faster re-engagement process in system-initiated ones (Chapter 5). The results suggest that assisting drivers after user-initiated transitions is not advisable as the assistance might induce steering conflicts. On the contrary, it is extremely beneficial to assist drivers during system-initiated transitions because of their low engagement with the driving task. The thesis concludes with a general overview of the conducted studies and a discussion on future studies to take this research forward

    Multi-Sensory Interaction for Blind and Visually Impaired People

    This book conveyed the visual elements of artwork to the visually impaired through various sensory elements to open a new perspective for appreciating visual artwork. In addition, the technique of expressing a color code by integrating patterns, temperatures, scents, music, and vibrations was explored, and future research topics were presented. A holistic experience using multi-sensory interaction acquired by people with visual impairment was provided to convey the meaning and contents of the work through rich multi-sensory appreciation. A method that allows people with visual impairments to engage in artwork using a variety of senses, including touch, temperature, tactile pattern, and sound, helps them to appreciate artwork at a deeper level than can be achieved with hearing or touch alone. The development of such art appreciation aids for the visually impaired will ultimately improve their cultural enjoyment and strengthen their access to culture and the arts. The development of this new concept aids ultimately expands opportunities for the non-visually impaired as well as the visually impaired to enjoy works of art and breaks down the boundaries between the disabled and the non-disabled in the field of culture and arts through continuous efforts to enhance accessibility.
