IGAA: An Efficient Optimization Technique for RFID Network Topology Design in Internet of Things

[[abstract]]Most RFID applications in the Internet of Things (IoTs) use multiple readers to read the IDs of multiple tags and form the RFID network. In such a network, unguarded reader deployment may generate over-crowded readers, cause interferences and, as a result, increases the deployment cost while degrading tag detection. Seeing that desirable reader deployment is crucial for RFID system performance, this paper introduces an optimization-based IGAA approach which outperforms existing RFID topology designs by turning up more favorable reader deployment and system performance. The new approach employs an advanced multi-objective fitness function and improved genetic annealing algorithms (GAA) to pursue a better RFID topology design. By involving an improved gene-stirring operation to help preserve good genes and locate optimal solutions for reader deployment, it is simple in operation but effective in practice. Experimental evaluation shows that when compared with related approaches, IGAA can yield better solution quality with less search time.[[notice]]補正完畢[[incitationindex]]EI[[booktype]]紙本[[booktype]]電子

    IEEE 802.15.4e: a Survey

Several studies have highlighted that the IEEE 802.15.4 standard presents a number of limitations such as low reliability, unbounded packet delays and no protection against interference/fading, that prevent its adoption in applications with stringent requirements in terms of reliability and latency. Recently, the IEEE has released the 802.15.4e amendment that introduces a number of enhancements/modifications to the MAC layer of the original standard in order to overcome such limitations. In this paper we provide a clear and structured overview of all the new 802.15.4e mechanisms. After a general introduction to the 802.15.4e standard, we describe the details of the main 802.15.4e MAC behavior modes, namely Time Slotted Channel Hopping (TSCH), Deterministic and Synchronous Multi-channel Extension (DSME), and Low Latency Deterministic Network (LLDN). For each of them, we provide a detailed description and highlight the main features and possible application domains. Also, we survey the current literature and summarize open research issues

Variations and Application Conditions Of the Data Type »Image« - The Foundation of Computational Visualistics

Few years ago, the department of computer science of the University Magdeburg invented a completely new diploma programme called 'computational visualistics', a curriculum dealing with all aspects of computational pictures. Only isolated aspects had been studied so far in computer science, particularly in the independent domains of computer graphics, image processing, information visualization, and computer vision. So is there indeed a coherent domain of research behind such a curriculum? The answer to that question depends crucially on a data structure that acts as a mediator between general visualistics and computer science: the data structure "image". The present text investigates that data structure, its components, and its application conditions, and thus elaborates the very foundations of computational visualistics as a unique and homogenous field of research. Before concentrating on that data structure, the theory of pictures in general and the definition of pictures as perceptoid signs in particular are closely examined. This includes an act-theoretic consideration about resemblance as the crucial link between image and object, the communicative function of context building as the central concept for comparing pictures and language, and several modes of reflection underlying the relation between image and image user. In the main chapter, the data structure "image" is extendedly analyzed under the perspectives of syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. While syntactic aspects mostly concern image processing, semantic questions form the core of computer graphics and computer vision. Pragmatic considerations are particularly involved with interactive pictures but also extend to the field of information visualization and even to computer art. Four case studies provide practical applications of various aspects of the analysis

Complex systems simulations to develop agency and citizenship skills through science education

In the era of big data, the progressively more widespread use of computational and data-intensive approaches is leading to changes in the ways of doing science and conducting research. The new methodologies and techniques are routine for researchers and professionals who make everyday use of big data analytics or simulations tools but are mainly unknown to ordinary people. Nevertheless, the impact of computational and data-intensive approaches has gone far beyond the scientific community, reaching the entire society. Indeed, the applications of machine learning and big data analytics, as well as the results and methods of computational simulations have reached people’s life and behaviour and, even more importantly, are at the methodological core of studies on urgent issues like the climate change or the pandemic, on which policymakers and citizens have to make decisions. Hence, the educational community cannot ignore the ongoing transformation of all people’s lives, behaviors, and culture. Within the research field of education to data science and computation, this dissertation addresses the issue of introducing in teaching-learning activities one of the methods of the on-going data science revolution: the computational simulations. Addressing the conceptual, methodological, and epistemological novelty of these objects, we will show how they embed, in a very specific, disciplinary-grounded way, the paradigm shift and cultural revolution of the data science age. We do that using lenses that come from the science of complexity, with its key-ideas that, originated from the physical modelling, can be applied to the analysis of a range of different phenomena. In the dissertation, we will guide the readers to recognize how dealing with simulations not only requires technical competences of coding, but a change of mindset and ways to think about the problems and the scientific method to address them

AIRO 2016. 46th Annual Conference of the Italian Operational Research Society. Emerging Advances in Logistics Systems Trieste, September 6-9, 2016 - Abstracts Book

The AIRO 2016 book of abstract collects the contributions from the conference participants. The AIRO 2016 Conference is a special occasion for the Italian Operations Research community, as AIRO annual conferences turn 46th edition in 2016. To reflect this special occasion, the Programme and Organizing Committee, chaired by Walter Ukovich, prepared a high quality Scientific Programme including the first initiative of AIRO Young, the new AIRO poster section that aims to promote the work of students, PhD students, and Postdocs with an interest in Operations Research. The Scientific Programme of the Conference offers a broad spectrum of contributions covering the variety of OR topics and research areas with an emphasis on “Emerging Advances in Logistics Systems”. The event aims at stimulating integration of existing methods and systems, fostering communication amongst different research groups, and laying the foundations for OR integrated research projects in the next decade. Distinct thematic sections follow the AIRO 2016 days starting by initial presentation of the objectives and features of the Conference. In addition three invited internationally known speakers will present Plenary Lectures, by Gianni Di Pillo, Frédéric Semet e Stefan Nickel, gathering AIRO 2016 participants together to offer key presentations on the latest advances and developments in OR’s research
