    Effective use of product quality information in meat processing

    This paper presents a case study on use of advanced product quality information in meat processing. To serve segmented customer demand meat processors consider use of innovative sensor technology to sort meat products to customer orders. To assess the use of this sensor technology a discrete-event simulation model is built. Various scenarios were defined for processing strategy (buffered or non-buffered), the number of end product groups to sort to and the availability of product quality information. The performance of these scenarios is measured w.r.t. order compliance, labor consumption and throughput-time. Our results reveal that the current processing and product sorting strategy is in-effective for sorting to a large number of end product groups. Furthermore, the current availability of product quality information is insufficient to ensure high levels of order compliance for advanced product quality products

    A ranking of the most known freeware and open source discrete-event simulation tools

    Freeware and open source simulation software can be of great relevant when applying simulation in companies that do not possess the required monetary resources to invest in traditional commercial software, since these can be unaffordable Even so, there is a lack of papers that contribute to literature with a comparison of opensource and freeware simulation tools. Furthermore, such existing papers fail to establish a proper assessment of these type of tools. In this regard, this paper proposes a study in which several freeware and open source discrete-event general purpose simulation tools were selected and compared, in order to propose a ranking based on the tools' popularity, considering several criteria. For this purpose, 30 criteria were used to assess the score of each tool, leading to a podium composed by SimPy, JSim and JaamSim.     How to Correctly Deal With Pseudorandom Numbers in Manycore Environments - Application to GPU programming with Shoverand

    International audienceStochastic simulations are often sensitive to the source of randomness that character-izes the statistical quality of their results. Consequently, we need highly reliable Random Number Generators (RNGs) to feed such applications. Recent developments try to shrink the computa-tion time by relying more and more General Purpose Graphics Processing Units (GP-GPUs) to speed-up stochastic simulations. Such devices bring new parallelization possibilities, but they also introduce new programming difficulties. Since RNGs are at the base of any stochastic simulation, they also need to be ported to GP-GPU. There is still a lack of well-designed implementations of quality-proven RNGs on GP-GPU platforms. In this paper, we introduce ShoveRand, a frame-work defining common rules to generate random numbers uniformly on GP-GPU. Our framework is designed to cope with any GPU-enabled development platform and to expose a straightfor-ward interface to users. We also provide an existing RNG implementation with this framework to demonstrate its efficiency in both development and ease of use
