    A novel haptic model and environment for maxillofacial surgical operation planning and manipulation

    This paper presents a practical method and a new haptic model to support manipulations of bones and their segments during the planning of a surgical operation in a virtual environment using a haptic interface. To perform an effective dental surgery it is important to have all the operation related information of the patient available beforehand in order to plan the operation and avoid any complications. A haptic interface with a virtual and accurate patient model to support the planning of bone cuts is therefore critical, useful and necessary for the surgeons. The system proposed uses DICOM images taken from a digital tomography scanner and creates a mesh model of the filtered skull, from which the jaw bone can be isolated for further use. A novel solution for cutting the bones has been developed and it uses the haptic tool to determine and define the bone-cutting plane in the bone, and this new approach creates three new meshes of the original model. Using this approach the computational power is optimized and a real time feedback can be achieved during all bone manipulations. During the movement of the mesh cutting, a novel friction profile is predefined in the haptical system to simulate the force feedback feel of different densities in the bone

    Virtual manufacturing: prediction of work piece geometric quality by considering machine and set-up

The design and development cycle can thus be reduced as manufacturing constraints are taken into account as early as possible. Thus, the design phase takes into account the manufacturing constraints as the customer requirements; more these constraints must not restrict the creativity of design. Also to facilitate the choice of the most suitable system for a specific process, Virtual Manufacturing is supplemented with developments of numerical computations (Altintas et al. 2005, Bianchi et al. 1996) in order to compare at low cost several solutions developed with several hypothesis without manufacturing of prototypes. In this context, the authors want to predict the work piece geometric more accurately by considering machine defects and work piece set-up, through the use of process simulation. A particular case study based on a 3 axis milling machine will be used here to illustrate the authors’ point of view.     Detection of Communities within the Multibody System Dynamics Network and Analysis of Their Relations

    Multibody system dynamics is already a well developed branch of theoretical, computational and applied mechanics. Thousands of documents can be found in any of the well-known scientific databases. In this work it is demonstrated that multibody system dynamics is built of many thematic communities. Using the Elsevier’s abstract and citation database SCOPUS, a massive amount of data is collected and analyzed with the use of the open source visualization tool Gephi. The information is represented as a large set of nodes with connections to study their graphical distribution and explore geometry and symmetries. A randomized radial symmetry is found in the graphical representation of the collected information. Furthermore, the concept of modularity is used to demonstrate that community structures are present in the field of multibody system dynamics. In particular, twenty-four different thematic communities have been identified. The scientific production of each community is analyzed, which allows to predict its growing rate in the next years. The journals and conference proceedings mainly used by the authors belonging to the community as well as the cooperation between them by country are also analyzed

    High value and long life products require continuous maintenance throughout their life cycle to achieve required performance with optimum through-life cost. This paper presents foundations and technologies required to offer the maintenance service. Component and system level degradation science, assessment and modelling along with life cycle ‘big data’ analytics are the two most important knowledge and skill base required for the continuous maintenance. Advanced computing and visualisation technologies will improve efficiency of the maintenance and reduce through-life cost of the product. Future of continuous maintenance within the Industry 4.0 context also identifies the role of IoT, standards and cyber security

    Modelling, identification and application of phenomenological constitutive laws over a large strain rate and temperature range

    A review of the different phenomenological thermo-viscoplastic constitutive models often applied to forging and machining processes is presented. Several of the most common models have been identified using a large experimental database (Hor et al., 2013). The latter consists of the tests were done in compression on cylindrical shaped specimens and in shear using hat-shaped specimens. The comparison between these different models is shown that the group of decoupled empirical constitutive models (e.g. the Johnson and Cook (1983) model), despite their simple identification procedures, are relatively limited, especially over a large range of strain rates and temperatures. Recent studies have led to the proposal of coupled empirical models. Three models in this class have also been studied. The Lurdos (2008) model shows the best accuracy but requires a large experimental database to identify its high number of parameters. After this comparison, a constitutive equation is proposed by modifying the TANH model (Calamaz et al., 2010). Coupling between the effects of strain rate and temperature is introduced. This model is easier to identify and does not require knowledge of the saturation stress. Compared to other models, it better reproduces the experimental results especially in the semi-hot and hot domains. In order to study real machining conditions, an orthogonal cutting tests is considered. The comparison between experimental test results and numerical simulations conducted using the previously identified constitutive models shows that the decoupled empirical models are not capable of reproducing the experimental observations. However, the coupled constitutive models, that take into account softening, improve the accuracy of these simulations
