    Effectiveness of Data Enrichment on Categorization: Two Case Studies on Short Texts and User Movements

    The widespread diffusion of mobile devices, e.g., smartphones and tablets, has made possible a huge increment in data generation by users. Nowadays, about a billion users daily interact on online social media, where they share information and discuss about a wide variety of topics, sometimes including the places they visit. Furthermore, the use of mobile devices makes available a large amount of data tracked by integrated sensors, which monitor several users’ activities, again including their position. The content produced by users are composed of few elements, such as only some words in a social post, or a simple GPS position, therefore a poor source of information to analyze. On this basis, a data enrichment process may provide additional knowledge by exploiting other related sources to extract additional data. The aim of this dissertation is to analyze the effectiveness of data enrichment for categorization, in particular on two domains, short texts and user movements. We de- scribe the concept behind our experimental design where users’ content are represented as abstract objects in a geometric space, with distances representing relatedness and similarity values, and contexts representing regions close to the each object where it is possibile to find other related objects, and therefore suitable as data enrichment source. Regarding short texts our research involves a novel approach on short text enrichment and categorization, and an extensive study on the properties of data used as enrich- ment. We analyze the temporal context and a set of properties which characterize data from an external source in order to properly select and extract additional knowledge related to textual content that users produce. We use Twitter as short texts source to build datasets for all experiments. Regarding user movements we address the problem of places categorization recognizing important locations that users visit frequently and intensively. We propose a novel approach on places categorization based on a feature space which models the users’ movement habits. We analyze both temporal and spa- tial context to find additional information to use as data enrichment and improve the importance recognition process. We use an in-house built dataset of GPS logs and the GeoLife public dataset for our experiments. Experimental evaluations on both our stud- ies highlight how the enrichment phase has a considerable impact on each process, and the results demonstrate its effectiveness. In particular, the short texts analysis shows how news articles are documents particularly suitable to be used as enrichment source, and their freshness is an important property to consider. User Movements analysis demonstrates how the context with additional data helps, even with user trajectories difficult to analyze. Finally, we provide an early stage study on user modeling. We exploit the data extracted with enrichment on the short texts to build a richer user profile.     Exploiting news to categorize tweets: Quantifying the impact of different news collections

    Short texts, due to their nature which makes them full of abbreviations and new coined acronyms, are not easy to classify. Text enrichment is emerging in the literature as a potentially useful tool. This paper is a part of a longer term research that aims at understanding the effectiveness of tweet enrichment by means of news, instead of the whole web as a knowledge source. Since the choice of a news collection may contribute to produce very different outcomes in the enrichment process, we compare the impact of three features of such collections: volume, variety, and freshness.     Collaborative recommendations with content-based filters for cultural activities via a scalable event distribution platform

    Nowadays, most people have limited leisure time and the offer of (cultural) activities to spend this time is enormous. Consequently, picking the most appropriate events becomes increasingly difficult for end-users. This complexity of choice reinforces the necessity of filtering systems that assist users in finding and selecting relevant events. Whereas traditional filtering tools enable e.g. the use of keyword-based or filtered searches, innovative recommender systems draw on user ratings, preferences, and metadata describing the events. Existing collaborative recommendation techniques, developed for suggesting web-shop products or audio-visual content, have difficulties with sparse rating data and can not cope at all with event-specific restrictions like availability, time, and location. Moreover, aggregating, enriching, and distributing these events are additional requisites for an optimal communication channel. In this paper, we propose a highly-scalable event recommendation platform which considers event-specific characteristics. Personal suggestions are generated by an advanced collaborative filtering algorithm, which is more robust on sparse data by extending user profiles with presumable future consumptions. The events, which are described using an RDF/OWL representation of the EventsML-G2 standard, are categorized and enriched via smart indexing and open linked data sets. This metadata model enables additional content-based filters, which consider event-specific characteristics, on the recommendation list. The integration of these different functionalities is realized by a scalable and extendable bus architecture. Finally, focus group conversations were organized with external experts, cultural mediators, and potential end-users to evaluate the event distribution platform and investigate the possible added value of recommendations for cultural participation

    CHORUS Deliverable 2.2: Second report - identification of multi-disciplinary key issues for gap analysis toward EU multimedia search engines roadmap

    After addressing the state-of-the-art during the first year of Chorus and establishing the existing landscape in multimedia search engines, we have identified and analyzed gaps within European research effort during our second year. In this period we focused on three directions, notably technological issues, user-centred issues and use-cases and socio- economic and legal aspects. These were assessed by two central studies: firstly, a concerted vision of functional breakdown of generic multimedia search engine, and secondly, a representative use-cases descriptions with the related discussion on requirement for technological challenges. Both studies have been carried out in cooperation and consultation with the community at large through EC concertation meetings (multimedia search engines cluster), several meetings with our Think-Tank, presentations in international conferences, and surveys addressed to EU projects coordinators as well as National initiatives coordinators. Based on the obtained feedback we identified two types of gaps, namely core technological gaps that involve research challenges, and “enablers”, which are not necessarily technical research challenges, but have impact on innovation progress. New socio-economic trends are presented as well as emerging legal challenges

    A New Approach to Information Extraction in User-Centric E-Recruitment Systems

    In modern society, people are heavily reliant on information available online through various channels, such as websites, social media, and web portals. Examples include searching for product prices, news, weather, and jobs. This paper focuses on an area of information extraction in e-recruitment, or job searching, which is increasingly used by a large population of users in across the world. Given the enormous volume of information related to job descriptions and users’ profiles, it is complicated to appropriately match a user’s profile with a job description, and vice versa. Existing information extraction techniques are unable to extract contextual entities. Thus, they fall short of extracting domain-specific information entities and consequently affect the matching of the user profile with the job description. The work presented in this paper aims to extract entities from job descriptions using a domain-specific dictionary. The extracted information entities are enriched with knowledge using Linked Open Data. Furthermore, job context information is expanded using a job description domain ontology based on the contextual and knowledge information. The proposed approach appropriately matches users’ profiles/queries and job descriptions. The proposed approach is tested using various experiments on data from real life jobs’ portals. The results show that the proposed approach enriches extracted data from job descriptions, and can help users to find more relevant jobs

    Content Recommendation Through Linked Data

    Nowadays, people can easily obtain a huge amount of information from the Web, but often they have no criteria to discern it. This issue is known as information overload. Recommender systems are software tools to suggest interesting items to users and can help them to deal with a vast amount of information. Linked Data is a set of best practices to publish data on the Web, and it is the basis of the Web of Data, an interconnected global dataspace. This thesis discusses how to discover information useful for the user from the vast amount of structured data, and notably Linked Data available on the Web. The work addresses this issue by considering three research questions: how to exploit existing relationships between resources published on the Web to provide recommendations to users; how to represent the user and his context to generate better recommendations for the current situation; and how to effectively visualize the recommended resources and their relationships. To address the first question, the thesis proposes a new algorithm based on Linked Data which exploits existing relationships between resources to recommend related resources. The algorithm was integrated into a framework to deploy and evaluate Linked Data based recommendation algorithms. In fact, a related problem is how to compare them and how to evaluate their performance when applied to a given dataset. The user evaluation showed that our algorithm improves the rate of new recommendations, while maintaining a satisfying prediction accuracy. To represent the user and their context, this thesis presents the Recommender System Context ontology, which is exploited in a new context-aware approach that can be used with existing recommendation algorithms. The evaluation showed that this method can significantly improve the prediction accuracy. As regards the problem of effectively visualizing the recommended resources and their relationships, this thesis proposes a visualization framework for DBpedia (the Linked Data version of Wikipedia) and mobile devices, which is designed to be extended to other datasets. In summary, this thesis shows how it is possible to exploit structured data available on the Web to recommend useful resources to users. Linked Data were successfully exploited in recommender systems. Various proposed approaches were implemented and applied to use cases of Telecom Italia
