Optimal Ship Maintenance Scheduling Under Restricted Conditions and Constrained Resources
The research presented in this dissertation addresses the application of evolution algorithms, i.e. Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Differential Evolution algorithm (DE) to scheduling problems in the presence of restricted conditions and resource limitations. This research is motivated by the scheduling of engineering design tasks in shop scheduling problems and ship maintenance scheduling problems to minimize total completion time. The thesis consists of two major parts; the first corresponds to the first appended paper and deals with the computational complexity of mixed shop scheduling problems. A modified Genetic algorithm is proposed to solve the problem. Computational experiments, conducted to evaluate its performance against known optimal solutions for different sized problems, show its superiority in computation time and the high applicability in practical mixed shop scheduling problems. The second part considers the major theme in the second appended paper and is related to the ship maintenance scheduling problem and the extended research on the multi-mode resource-constrained ship scheduling problem. A heuristic Differential Evolution is developed and applied to solve these problems. A mathematical optimization model is also formulated for the multi-mode resource-constrained ship scheduling problem. Through the computed results, DE proves its effectiveness and efficiency in addressing both single and multi-objective ship maintenance scheduling problem
A reusable iterative optimization software library to solve combinatorial problems with approximate reasoning
Real world combinatorial optimization problems such as scheduling are
typically too complex to solve with exact methods. Additionally, the problems
often have to observe vaguely specified constraints of different importance,
the available data may be uncertain, and compromises between antagonistic
criteria may be necessary. We present a combination of approximate reasoning
based constraints and iterative optimization based heuristics that help to
model and solve such problems in a framework of C++ software libraries called
StarFLIP++. While initially developed to schedule continuous caster units in
steel plants, we present in this paper results from reusing the library
components in a shift scheduling system for the workforce of an industrial

A Generic Library of Problem Solving Methods for Scheduling Applications
In this thesis we propose a generic library of scheduling problem-solving methods. As a first approximation, scheduling can be defined as an assignment of jobs and activities to resources and time ranges in accordance with a number of constraints and requirements. In some cases optimisation criteria may also be included in the problem specification.
Although, several attempts have been made in the past at developing the libraries of scheduling problem-solvers, these only provide limited coverage. Many lack generality, as they subscribe to a particular scheduling domain. Others simply implement a particular problem-solving technique, which may be applicable only to a subset of the space of scheduling problems. In addition, most of these libraries fail to provide the required degree of depth and precision, which is needed both to obtain a formal account of scheduling problem solving and to provide effective support for development of scheduling applications by reuse.
Our library subscribes to the Task-Method-Domain-Application (TMDA) knowledge modelling framework, which provides a structured organisation for the different components of the library. In line with the organisation proposed by TMDA, we first developed a generic scheduling task ontology, which formalises the space of scheduling problems independently of any particular application domain, or problem solving method. Then we constructed a task-specific, but domain independent model of scheduling problem-solving, which generalises from the variety of approaches to scheduling problem-solving, which can be found in literature. The generic nature of this model was demonstrated by constructing seven methods for scheduling, as alternative specialisation of the model. Finally, we validated our library on a number of applications to demonstrate its generic nature and effective support for the analysis and development of scheduling applications
A distributed multi-agent framework for shared resources scheduling
Nowadays, manufacturers have to share some of their resources with partners due to the competitive economic environment. The management of the availability periods of shared resources causes a problem because it is achieved by the scheduling systems which assume a local environment where all resources are on the same site. Therefore, distributed scheduling with shared resources is an important research topic in recent years. In this communication, we introduce the architecture and behavior of DSCEP framework (distributed, supervisor, customer, environment, and producer) under shared resources situation with disturbances. We are using a simple example of manufacturing system to illustrate the ability of DSCEP framework to solve the shared resources scheduling problem in complex systems

A review of asset management literature on multi-asset systems
This article gives an overview of the literature on asset management for multi-unit systems with an emphasis on two multi-asset categories: fleet (a system of homogeneous assets) and portfolio (a system of heterogeneous assets). As asset systems become more complicated, researchers have employed different terms to refer to their specific problems. With an
objective to facilitate readers in searching conducive studies to their interests, this paper establishes a novel classification scheme for multi-unit systems in accordance with essential features such as diversity of assets and intervention options. Moreover, discerning differences in characteristics between cross-component and cross-asset interactions, we select three types of potential multi-component dependencies (performance, stochastic, and resource) and extend their notions to be applicable to multi-asset systems. The investigation into these dependencies enables the identification of problems that could exist in real industrial settings
but are yet to be determined in academia. Ultimately, we delve into modelling approaches adopted by previous researchers. This comprehensive information allows us to offer the insights into the current trends in multi-asset maintenance. We expect that the output of this review paper will not only stress research gaps on multi-asset systems, but more importantly
help systematise future studies on this aspect
On green routing and scheduling problem
