    Sight surfers: partilha e geonavegação em vídeos 360º

    Tese de mestrado em Engenharia Informática, apresentada à Universidade de Lisboa, através da Faculdade de Ciências, 2012Este relatório descreve o trabalho realizado no âmbiro da tese do Mestrado em Engenharia Informática do DIFCUL que está a ser desenvolvida no contexto do projecto “ImTV– “On-Demand Immersive-TV for Communities of Media Producers and Consu-mers” no grupo HCIM do laboratório de investigação LaSIGE do Departamento de Informática da Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa, com o título “Sight Sur-fers: Partilha e Geonavegação em Vídeos 360º”. Com os desenvolvimentos tecnológicos, o acesso a conteúdos audiovisuais através de várias plataformas tem vindo a destacar-se grandemente a uma escala global. E a visualização de vídeo interactivo em crossmedia é uma área que está a ganhar muita popularidade entre os utilizadores. Este trabalho apresenta formas de captação, submissão e indexação de vídeos georreferenciados. Também oferece formas de pesquisa e exploração dos conteúdos armazenados dentro do sistema. O foco principal do trabalho prende-se no desenvolvimento de formas de navegação e exploração de vídeo em 360º, no hipervídeo em 360º, com especial preocupação em oferecer soluções para os obstáculos colocados por este médium que são aumentados com a introdução do vídeo em 360º e no mapa com os dados georreferenciados. Também se pretende desenvolver mecanismos de detecção de cruzentos entre percursos e mecanismos de filtragem de vídeos georreferenciados. Todos os protótipos desenvolvidos foram testados por utilizadores, para compreender as suas limitações e determinar a sua utilidade, facilidade de uso e satisfação. Apesar de muitos dos utilizadores não estarem a par de recentes desenvolvimentos dentro do hipervídeo georreferenciado em 360º, na sua maioria gostaram da ideia e admitiram voltar a utilizá-la brevemente.This report describes the work being done in the context of the thesis of the Informatics Engeneering Masters of DIFCUL that is being developed in the course of the project named “ImTV– “On-Demand Immersive-TV for Communities of Media Producers and Consumers” belonging to the HCIM of the LaSIGE research laboratory of the Informatics Department of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, with the title of the thesis being “Sight Sufers: Sharing and Geonavigation in 360º Videos”. With the technological developments, the access to audiovisual contents on various platforms has been gaining great grounds on a global scale. And the visualization of interactive video in crossmedia is an area that has been getting a lot of popularity amongst users. This project offers ways for capture, submition and indexing of georreferenced videos. It also offers stored content search and exploration inside the system. The main goal of this work is in developing novel ideas to navigate and explore 360º videos, 360º hypervideo, with special focus on offering solutions for the main challenges that are raised by this medium and that are raised by the introduction of 360º video and the map with georreferencing data. Also there is the goal to develop route inter-section mechanisms and georreference video filtering mechanisms. All the implemented prototypes were submited to user testing, to comprehend their limitations and to assert their utility, ease of use and satisfaction. Although many of the user were not familiar with the developments of georreferenced 360º hypervideo, the majority of them liked the idea and admitted using it again soon

    Digital material: tracing new media in everyday life and technology

    Three decades of societal and cultural alignment of new media have yielded a host of innovations, trials, and problems, accompanied by versatile popular and academic discourse. New Media Studies crystallized internationally into an established academic discipline, and this begs the question: where do we stand now? Which new questions are emerging now that new media are being taken for granted, and which riddles are still unsolved? Is contemporary digital culture indeed all about 'you', the participating user, or do we still not really understand the digital machinery and how this constitutes us as 'you'? The contributors to the present book, all employed in teaching and researching new media and digital culture, assembled their 'digital material' into an anthology, covering issues ranging from desktop metaphors to Web 2.0 ecosystems, from touch screens to blogging and e-learning, from role-playing games and cybergothic music to wireless dreams. Together the contributions provide a showcase of current research in the field, from what may be called a 'digital-materialist' perspective.Nieuwe media zijn vanaf hun opkomst begeleid door revolutionaire beloften en bedreigingen: hypertekst zou lezers veranderen in auteurs, digitale beelden zouden de waarheid en werkelijkheid ondermijnen, en online communicatie zou alle afstanden overbruggen. 'Cyberspace' werd gevierd dan wel gevreesd als immaterieel en autonoom, losgezongen van onze dagelijkse leefwereld.     Underwater photoelicitation: a new experiential marine education technique

    Underwater photoelicitation, a new experiential marine education technique, combines digital cameras and direct experience in the marine environment. The research explores whether this technique increases awareness, fosters a sense of connection, changes attitudes and fosters positive environmental actions towards the oceans through community and school based programs. Results show that this technique is effective at increasing awareness and fostering a sense of connection, but that knowledge components are also necessary to facilitate pro-environmental attitudes and behaviors

    Fictocritical Cyberfeminism: A Paralogical Model for Post-Internet Communication

    This dissertation positions the understudied and experimental writing practice of fictocriticism as an analog for the convergent and indeterminate nature of “post-Internet” communication as well a cyberfeminist technology for interfering and in-tervening in metanarratives of technoscience and technocapitalism that structure contemporary media. Significant theoretical valences are established between twen-tieth century literary works of fictocriticism and the hybrid and ephemeral modes of writing endemic to emergent, twenty-first century forms of networked communica-tion such as social media. Through a critical theoretical understanding of paralogy, or that countercultural logic of deploying language outside legitimate discourses, in-volving various tactics of multivocity, mimesis and metagraphy, fictocriticism is ex-plored as a self-referencing linguistic machine which exists intentionally to occupy those liminal territories “somewhere in among/between criticism, autobiography and fiction” (Hunter qtd. in Kerr 1996). Additionally, as a writing practice that orig-inated in Canada and yet remains marginal to national and international literary scholarship, this dissertation elevates the origins and ongoing relevance of fictocriti-cism by mapping its shared aims and concerns onto proximal discourses of post-structuralism, cyberfeminism, network ecology, media art, the avant-garde, glitch feminism, and radical self-authorship in online environments. Theorized in such a matrix, I argue that fictocriticism represents a capacious framework for writing and reading media that embodies the self-reflexive politics of second-order cybernetic theory while disrupting the rhetoric of technoscientific and neoliberal economic forc-es with speech acts of calculated incoherence. Additionally, through the inclusion of my own fictocritical writing as works of research-creation that interpolate the more traditional chapters and subchapters, I theorize and demonstrate praxis of this dis-tinctively indeterminate form of criticism to empirically and meaningfully juxtapose different modes of knowing and speaking about entangled matters of language, bod-ies, and technologies. In its conclusion, this dissertation contends that the “creative paranoia” engendered by fictocritical cyberfeminism in both print and digital media environments offers a pathway towards a more paralogical media literacy that can transform the terms and expectations of our future media ecology

    Cultural Capital and Habitus in Golf Consumption: Embedded Mechanisms of Transference

    This study looks to advance our understanding of the increasingly nuanced cultural capital, subcultural capital, and habitus in consumer research by exploring how individuals transfer dispositions of habitus and embodied forms of capital across field boundaries. Using an ethnographic and autoethnographic approach, the research examines how mechanisms of transference, embedded in the habitus and homogeneity between valorizing field structures, permit individuals to utilize aggregated forms of cultural and subcultural capital sculpted by the field of golf. Through participant observation, interviews, journals, and over two years of exhaustive golf performance, both in the Northeast of England and further abroad, the research illustrates how narratives of soft skills and emotional capital shape the dispositions of individuals acquired, developed, and complemented by significant secondary socialization. This research contributes to the existing consumer research and consumer culture theory by extending understandings and conceptualisations of marketplace cultures, particularly subcultures of sport, and how cultural resources and distinctive practices previously thought to be contextdependent might be transferred. Further, the research engages with the middle-class habitus to portray these dispositions with characteristics other of the normative exclusionary and marginalizing. Emergent themes of communication, patience, discipline, asceticism, and critical practice indicate elements of ubiquity in soft skills and emotional capital, highlighted by a varied participant demographic recognising the value of these themes in other fields. By exploring these narratives of cultural and subcultural capital acquisition, development, and transference in the context of golf, the research also contributes to the conceptualisation of sports consumption and its relationship with cultural capital; illustrating sport as a context through which cultural and subcultural capital can be acquired, developed, and augmented rather than contexts in which more traditional forms of capital are simply displayed

    Obiter Dicta

    "Stitched together over five years of journaling, Obiter Dicta is a commonplace book of freewheeling explorations representing the transcription of a dozen notebooks, since painstakingly reimagined for publication. Organized after Theodor Adorno’s Minima Moralia, this unschooled exercise in aesthetic thought—gleefully dilettantish, oftentimes dangerously close to the epigrammatic—interrogates an array of subject matter (although inescapably circling back to the curiously resemblant histories of Western visual art and instrumental music) through the lens of drive-by speculation. Erick Verran’s approach to philosophical inquiry follows the brute-force literary technique of Jacques Derrida to exhaustively favor the material grammar of a signifier over hand-me-down meaning, juxtaposing outer semblances with their buried systems and our etched-in-stone intuitions about color and illusion, shape and value, with lessons stolen from seemingly unrelatable disciplines. Interlarded with extracts of Ludwig Wittgenstein but also Wallace Stevens, Cormac McCarthy as well as Roland Barthes, this cache of incidental remarks eschews what’s granular for the biggest picture available, leaving below the hyper-specialized fields of academia for a bird’s-eye view of their crop circles. Obiter Dicta is an unapologetic experiment in intellectual dot-connecting that challenges much long-standing wisdom about everything from illuminated manuscripts to Minecraft and the evolution of European music with lyrical brevity; that is, before jumping to the next topic.
