Socializing, Shared Experience and Popular Culture

We argue that socializing is an important economic activity because it is vital to our well being, and that an important input into the activity of socializing is the set of experiences that is shared by the participants. Clearly, a person's experiences are generated, in part, by standard economic choices, and therefore the set of shared experiences in any social encounter is driven by the prior economic choices of individual participants. One implication is that these prior choices are not purely private since the utility that individual participants derive from a social encounter is linked to them. Our model of this link provides an explanation of a number of interesting phenomena, including certain sorts of conformity, the domination of one culture by another, and the existence of superstars.

Business and sustainability - a shared experience

One of the aims of university education is to prepare young people to be responsible citizens for the future. In the business world, the notion of sustainability is increasingly recognised as an important agenda. Both the Higher Education Funding Council (2008) and the Quality Assurance Agency (2014) acknowledge the critical role of higher education in educating socially responsible and ethically aware graduates. In line with this trend, many business schools have responded by offering sustainability related subjects and exploring pedagogical tools for engagement. Developing sustainability literacy (Stibbe 2011), shifting mindsets (Stubbs and Cocklin, 2008), developing critical thinking skills (Brookfield, 2011) and creating significant learning experiences for students (Dee Fink 2003) are just some examples of approaches which have proved successful. However, such initiatives and the concept of sustainability itself pose some difficult educational challenges for both educators and students. This paper explores the impact of an innovative module on business and sustainability entitled Develop Sustainable Enterprises which is offered as an option to second year students in the Business School at Canterbury Christ Church University. This is the second year that the module has run and sixty five students elected to participate. Evidence of impact has been gathered (a) using a pre and post module questionnaire; (b) through the ‘voices’ of four students who have responded to the module in different ways. Tutor reflections provide an additional viewpoint. The student contributions make this an unusual and strongly grounded presentation which will illustrate a shared experience between students and tutor on a learning journey

Too Many Options Dilute Shared Experience

Despite the red carpet glitter of the Oscars, it is no secret that Hollywood has had a far from perfect year at the box office. And unfortunately for Tinsel Town, its problems go beyond the obvious need for more successful films. The way we experience both movies and television has evolved. We don\u27t do things together the way we once did. We rent movies and watch them at home rather than going to a local movie theater with family and friends. Box office returns suffer and the centrality of film in our lives is weakened. The same fragmentation is true in television. Sadly, the kind of cultural reference points provided by the likes of Johnny Carson, Lucille Ball, Jackie Gleason, and more - including the superstar network news anchors in their prime - are fading. They provided a snug sense of intimacy that comes from a shared common experience. The result? Significant social change brought on by audience fragmentation. The root cause? A proliferation of entertainment options impelled by niche-driven marketing

Proceedings 31st AEDEAN Conference. 2008. MarĂa JesĂșs Lorenzo Modia. Ed. 889-898. A Coruña: Universidade. ISBN: 978-84-9749-278-2[Abstract] Ecofeminism originated in political activism in the late 70s and 80s and only found its way into literary criticism in the 90s. Throughout human history, nature has constantly been feminized and women naturalized, particularly due to aspects of fertility and natural cycles. While some feminists reject this association of women and nature, others embraced the relationship between women and nature, based on the shared experience of oppression and domination. Ecofeminists highlight the conceptual connection between the domination of women and the domination of nature as being located in an oppressive and patriarchal conceptual framework characterized by a logic of domination. This round table pretends to analyze both ecofeminist literary theory and representative literary works. The panelists will discuss writers such as Ana Castillo, Alicia Gaspar de Alba and Octavia Butler. We will also show several photographs from the campaigns of the PETA organization and analyze them from an ecofeminist approach

Collective Awe: The Effects of Shared Experience

Awe, as a complex positive emotion that mixes wonder, veneration, and/or dread, has been shown to induce a small sense of self. In the current research, we focused on the question of whether sharing an awe experience has an impact on that experience. We conducted two studies in which we explored the effects of “collective awe” as it relates to awe intensity, awe-related emotions, self-diminishment, and wellbeing. In addition, based on previous research, we hypothesized that participants with higher awe intensity ratings and awe-related emotion scores would score higher on self-diminishment and wellbeing measures than participants with lower awe intensity ratings and awe-related emotion scores. In Study 1, participants wrote about a time when they experienced awe as either an individual or shared experience. Study 2 participants watched an awe-inducing or neutral video, either alone or with another person. In both studies, participants completed measures of awe and awe-related emotions, self-diminishment, and wellbeing. We found little evidence that shared and individual awe experiences differ. There was also conflicting evidence for the hypothesized impact of awe on self-diminishment. Lastly, we found some evidence in support for the hypothesized impact of awe on wellbeing. Future research is needed to understand the impact of shared experience on awe and how it is associated with different aspects of self-diminishment as well as how and when it is associated with wellbeing

Pervasive technologies that now exist in the urban setting have greatly improved the ability to connect on a macro-level, but have minimized the intimate shared experience of community on a micro level. This paper explores how technology has changed rituals within the global community and has contributed new methods to the process of human interaction. Technology’s influence on civic engagement, business meetings, shopping and socializing are examined to assess the impact technology has on human connections
