3D Geometric Analysis of Tubular Objects based on Surface Normal Accumulation
This paper proposes a simple and efficient method for the reconstruction and
extraction of geometric parameters from 3D tubular objects. Our method
constructs an image that accumulates surface normal information, then peaks
within this image are located by tracking. Finally, the positions of these are
optimized to lie precisely on the tubular shape centerline. This method is very
versatile, and is able to process various input data types like full or partial
mesh acquired from 3D laser scans, 3D height map or discrete volumetric images.
The proposed algorithm is simple to implement, contains few parameters and can
be computed in linear time with respect to the number of surface faces. Since
the extracted tube centerline is accurate, we are able to decompose the tube
into rectilinear parts and torus-like parts. This is done with a new linear
time 3D torus detection algorithm, which follows the same principle of a
previous work on 2D arc circle recognition. Detailed experiments show the

A framework for hull form reverse engineering and geometry integration into numerical simulations
The thesis presents a ship hull form specific reverse engineering and CAD integration framework. The reverse engineering part proposes three alternative suitable reconstruction approaches namely curves network, direct surface fitting, and triangulated surface reconstruction. The CAD integration part includes surface healing, region identification, and domain preparation strategies which used to adapt the CAD model to downstream application requirements. In general, the developed framework bridges a point cloud and a CAD model obtained from IGES and STL file into downstream applications
Methods of obtaining smooth surface in 2D/3D surface reconstruction
Surface reconstruction is an emergent research area in the field of computer aided design and manufacturing. There are various methods / algorithms which are working considerably well for surface reconstruction problem but we cannot say to the best of our knowledge that we got all the solutions. Missing surface can be repaired either by surface patch or by extending boundary curves. However, in both cases, surface smoothening problem arises in form of flat surface. Automatic normal orientation in point clouds of building interiors
Orienting surface normals correctly and consistently is a fundamental problem
in geometry processing. Applications such as visualization, feature detection,
and geometry reconstruction often rely on the availability of correctly
oriented normals. Many existing approaches for automatic orientation of normals
on meshes or point clouds make severe assumptions on the input data or the
topology of the underlying object which are not applicable to real-world
measurements of urban scenes. In contrast, our approach is specifically
tailored to the challenging case of unstructured indoor point cloud scans of
multi-story, multi-room buildings. We evaluate the correctness and speed of our
approach on multiple real-world point cloud datasets

A Study On Applications And Techniques Of Surface Re- Construction
This paper describes a general method for automatic reconstruction of accurate, concise, piecewise smooth surfaces from unorganized 3D points. Instances of surface reconstruction arise in numerous scientific and engineering applications, including reverseengineering, the automatic generation of CAD models from physical objects etc. Previous surface reconstruction methods have typically required additional knowledge, such as structure in the data, known surface genus, or orientation information. In contrast, the method outlined in this paper requires only the 3D coordinates of the data points. From the data, the method is able to automatically infer the topological type of the surface, its geometry, and the presence and location of features such as boundaries, creases, and corners. The surface reconstruction method has three major phases: Initial surface estimation, Mesh optimization, and piecewise smooth surface optimization.
