Economic Globalisation: The Process and its Potential, Social, Economic and Environmental Impacts

    Get PDF
After economic globalisation is defined, the factors that have favoured it in recent times are outlined and the process is placed in a historical context. Measures of the recent expansion in economic globalisation are given, such as trends in the proportion of global GDP traded internationally, and the relative size of global FDI. China’s comparative economic openness compared to the rest of the world is discussed. Potential positive and negative economic and social impacts of globalisation are explored, taking into account important economic theories. Particular attention is given to globalisation and the evolutionary dynamics of economic growth by considering the economic ‘catching up’ phase of countries, such as China, and by placing this in a general evolutionary context. The question is also posed of whether economic growth will eventually cease, and whether industrial and social structures could become defective once economic globalisation is well established and enters its mature phase. Economic growth fostered by growing globalisation also raises globally important environmental and natural resource issues of relevance to the sustainability of economic growth and to the fulfilment of human goals. Some of these issues are investigated, taking into account theories that provide an optimistic prognosis, as well as those which warn of dangers and difficulties ahead.globalisation, GDP, FDI, China, social impacts of globalisation, economic growth, Environmental Economics and Policy, International Development,

Despite the strategic position of serials publications amongst the materials acquired in the library most especially academic libraries and in spite of their unique values as dependable allies of academics and other researchers and the increasing cost of their acquisition, the management of serials has not enjoyed a corresponding attention from library managers as well as writers in the field of librarianship. Investigation was therefore conducted to appraise serials management practices in two polytechnic libraries. Attention was directed at such specific routines as selection and acquisition of serials, recording of titles, methods of serials dissemination, filling of gaps in back runs, binding of serials and other issues that are considered most crucial in serials management. Solutions were proffered to identified problems. Samaru Journal of Information Studies Vol. 7 (2) 2007: pp. 28-3

Welfare and distributional impacts of financial liberalization in an open economy : lessons from a multi-sectoral dynamic CGE model for Nepal

    Get PDF
By equalizing rates of return across sectors, financial liberalization improves efficiency and equalizes the distribution of income. Efficiency gained in the allocation of resources increases capital usage more in previously heavily repressed sectors such as agriculture and textile, allowing up to a 19 percent expansion in production and employment. The savings and investment responses, degree of factor substitutions, are higher in the complete liberalization than in partial or piecemeal liberalization. Income, consumption, utility and overall welfare of rural and urban households increase. Liberalization is not effective if savings are used in accumulations of unproductive assets i.e. gold, jewelry, urban land, and foreign exchange. Financial liberalization improves the distribution of income by raising the wage rate of rural labour than for urban labour as rural labour-intensive sectors invest more with increased access to financial institutions and demand more labour to complement additional capital employed in these sectors
