    For differential equations with r parameters, 2r+1 experiments are enough for identification

    Given a set of differential equations whose description involves unknown parameters, such as reaction constants in chemical kinetics, and supposing that one may at any time measure the values of some of the variables and possibly apply external inputs to help excite the system, how many experiments are sufficient in order to obtain all the information that is potentially available about the parameters? This paper shows that the best possible answer (assuming exact measurements) is 2r+1 experiments, where r is the number of parameters.Comment: This is a minor revision of the previously submitted report; a couple of typos have been fixed, and some comments and two new references have been added.     The theory and techniques applicable to the on-line diagnosis of sequential systems, were investigated. A complete model for the study of on-line diagnosis is developed. First an appropriate class of system models is formulated which can serve as a basis for a theoretical study of on-line diagnosis. Then notions of realization, fault, fault-tolerance and diagnosability are formalized which have meaningful interpretations in the the context of on-line diagnosis. The diagnosis of systems which are structurally decomposed and are represented as a network of smaller systems is studied. The fault set considered is the set of faults which only affect one component system is the network. A characterization of those networks which can be diagnosed using a purely combinational detector is achieved. A technique is given which can be used to realize any network by a network which is diagnosable in the above sense. Limits are found on the amount of redundancy involved in any such technique

    The realization and application of parallel linear feedback shift registers

    Two methods for serial-to-parallel transformation of linear feedback shift registers are briefly discussed. A third method for transformation is rigorously developed using a next-state and output equation representation of the linear feedback shift register. An algorithm is developed for simplifying the parallel machine resulting from serial-to-parallel transformation, where simplification is defined as reduction in the required number of modulo 2 adders.
