In this report, the authors focus on the diverse challenges facing veterans in 12 states and communities that account for nearly one-third of all veterans nationwide. They report on the specific challenges of mental health care, employment, housing, family support, reintegration and legal matters with which veterans in the region are contending and propose steps to address them. Among their recommendations, Mr. Carter and Ms. Kidder urge private philanthropists, as well as public funders, to encourage communities to build collaboration and coordination mechanisms that allocate increasingly scarce resources efficiently an

Benefits of Location-Based Access Control:A Literature Study

Location-based access control (LBAC) has been suggested as a means to improve IT security. By 'grounding' users and systems to a particular location, \ud attackers supposedly have more difficulty in compromising a system. However, the motivation behind LBAC and its potential benefits have not been investigated thoroughly. To this end, we perform a structured literature review, and examine the goals that LBAC can potentially fulfill, \ud the specific LBAC systems that realize these goals and the context on which LBAC depends. Our paper has four main contributions:\ud first we propose a theoretical framework for LBAC evaluation, based on goals, systems and context. Second, we formulate and apply criteria for evaluating the usefulness of an LBAC system. Third, we identify four usage scenarios for LBAC: open areas and systems, hospitals, enterprises, and finally data centers and military facilities. Fourth, we propose directions for future research:\ud (i) assessing the tradeoffs between location-based, physical and logical access control, (ii) improving the transparency of LBAC decision making, and \ud (iii) formulating design criteria for facilities and working environments for optimal LBAC usage

    Human Relations Report

Any assessment of the state of human relations in the Chicago region needs to be multidimensional. At its most basic, such an assessment involves the quality of relationships, or relations, among individuals. Relations may manifest themselves in families, among friends, within neighborhoods, or in work, religious, educational, recreational or other social settings. There are no widely accepted measures of the quality of human relations, in part because different commentators view the subject differently. Quality human relations may have several outcomes: for people to be satisfied or experience a good quality of life; for people to be supportive and helpful to one another; or for people to treat one another fairly and equally. In some social settings, individuals with common characteristics share a common fate or have similar life experiences and opportunities. Other social settings are marked more by differences among groups than commonalities. Such differences can be readily observed in the cases of different racial, ethnic, age or language groups; among persons sharing a gender or sexual orientation; or among the disabled. These social groupings seem to have the most impact on people's condition and identity

SPIRITUAL CAPACITY AND SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP IN THE IMPROVEMENT OF WORKING CONDITIONS OF ORGANIZATIONS

Constant environment changes and the increases in the impact of information technology and communications have brought the human beings to the point of feeling being disorganized and alienated. Having a supporting system relying on which man can preserve his mental and spiritual calmness is now suggested as a necessity. Spirituality and faith are of the phenomena which are always encouraging people to be humanitarian and try to satisfy the needs of other people. When different dimensions of spirituality are applied in the working environment, individual satisfaction and creativity, organizational order, and long-term commercial success are increased. This paper mainly aims at studying the spiritual capacities and spiritual leadership in applied management, and after giving some general definitions of spirituality, it studies the role of spirituality and spiritual leadership in the efficiency of working environment and improvement of working conditions in the organizationsSpirituality, Spiritual Leadership, Spirituality at Work, Improvement in Working Condition

Narratives of an outsourced information systems failure in a small enterprise

    Get PDF
In this study we investigate a case of an outsourced information systems (IS) failure (OISF) within the collaborative partnership among asymmetric partners. A small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) is dealing with an independent software vendor (ISV) conducting a project of implementing an IS that fails. We used a narrative research methodology for our enquiry. In the construction of our narrative we followed the OISF framework as a theoretical touchstone. As a major conclusion we found that asymmetric collaborations with partners with inadequate managerial and technical IT capabilities are extremely prone to OISF’s. We showed that an outcome-based and fixed price contract is not an adequate instrument to conduct such a partnership and to avoid a failure
