Markov Decision Processes with Applications in Wireless Sensor Networks: A Survey
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) consist of autonomous and resource-limited
devices. The devices cooperate to monitor one or more physical phenomena within
an area of interest. WSNs operate as stochastic systems because of randomness
in the monitored environments. For long service time and low maintenance cost,
WSNs require adaptive and robust methods to address data exchange, topology
formulation, resource and power optimization, sensing coverage and object
detection, and security challenges. In these problems, sensor nodes are to make
optimized decisions from a set of accessible strategies to achieve design
goals. This survey reviews numerous applications of the Markov decision process
(MDP) framework, a powerful decision-making tool to develop adaptive algorithms
and protocols for WSNs. Furthermore, various solution methods are discussed and
compared to serve as a guide for using MDPs in WSNs
Sensor Scheduling for Energy-Efficient Target Tracking in Sensor Networks
In this paper we study the problem of tracking an object moving randomly
through a network of wireless sensors. Our objective is to devise strategies
for scheduling the sensors to optimize the tradeoff between tracking
performance and energy consumption. We cast the scheduling problem as a
Partially Observable Markov Decision Process (POMDP), where the control actions
correspond to the set of sensors to activate at each time step. Using a
bottom-up approach, we consider different sensing, motion and cost models with
increasing levels of difficulty. At the first level, the sensing regions of the
different sensors do not overlap and the target is only observed within the
sensing range of an active sensor. Then, we consider sensors with overlapping
sensing range such that the tracking error, and hence the actions of the
different sensors, are tightly coupled. Finally, we consider scenarios wherein
the target locations and sensors' observations assume values on continuous
spaces. Exact solutions are generally intractable even for the simplest models
due to the dimensionality of the information and action spaces. Hence, we
devise approximate solution techniques, and in some cases derive lower bounds
on the optimal tradeoff curves. The generated scheduling policies, albeit
suboptimal, often provide close-to-optimal energy-tracking tradeoffs
Car-Park Management using Wireless Sensor Networks
A complete wireless sensor network solution for car-park management is presented in this paper. The system architecture and design are first detailed, followed by a description of the current working implementation, which is based on our DSYS25z sensing nodes. Results of a series of real experimental tests regarding connectivity, sensing and network performance are then discussed. The analysis of link characteristics in the car park scenario shows unexpected reliability patterns which have a strong influence on MAC and routing protocol design. Two unexpected link reliability patterns are identified and documented. First, the presence of the objects (cars) being sensed can cause significant interference and degradation in communication performance. Second, link quality has a high temporal correlation but a low spatial correlation. From these observations we conclude that a) the construction and maintenance of a fixed topology is not useful and b) spatial rather than temporal message replicates can improve transport reliability
A sub-mW IoT-endnode for always-on visual monitoring and smart triggering
This work presents a fully-programmable Internet of Things (IoT) visual
sensing node that targets sub-mW power consumption in always-on monitoring
scenarios. The system features a spatial-contrast binary
pixel imager with focal-plane processing. The sensor, when working at its
lowest power mode ( at 10 fps), provides as output the number of
changed pixels. Based on this information, a dedicated camera interface,
implemented on a low-power FPGA, wakes up an ultra-low-power parallel
processing unit to extract context-aware visual information. We evaluate the
smart sensor on three always-on visual triggering application scenarios.
Triggering accuracy comparable to RGB image sensors is achieved at nominal
lighting conditions, while consuming an average power between and
, depending on context activity. The digital sub-system is extremely
flexible, thanks to a fully-programmable digital signal processing engine, but
still achieves 19x lower power consumption compared to MCU-based cameras with

Towards efficient coexistence of IEEE 802.15.4e TSCH and IEEE 802.11
A major challenge in wide deployment of smart wireless devices, using
different technologies and sharing the same 2.4 GHz spectrum, is to achieve
coexistence across multiple technologies. The IEEE~802.11 (WLAN) and the IEEE
802.15.4e TSCH (WSN) where designed with different goals in mind and both play
important roles for respective applications. However, they cause mutual
interference and degraded performance while operating in the same space. To
improve this situation we propose an approach to enable a cooperative control
which type of network is transmitting at given time, frequency and place.
We recognize that TSCH based sensor network is expected to occupy only small
share of time, and that the nodes are by design tightly synchronized. We
develop mechanism enabling over-the-air synchronization of the Wi-Fi network to
the TSCH based sensor network. Finally, we show that Wi-Fi network can avoid
transmitting in the "collision periods". We provide full design and show
prototype implementation based on the Commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) devices.

Information Acquisition with Sensing Robots: Algorithms and Error Bounds
Utilizing the capabilities of configurable sensing systems requires
addressing difficult information gathering problems. Near-optimal approaches
exist for sensing systems without internal states. However, when it comes to
optimizing the trajectories of mobile sensors the solutions are often greedy
and rarely provide performance guarantees. Notably, under linear Gaussian
assumptions, the problem becomes deterministic and can be solved off-line.
Approaches based on submodularity have been applied by ignoring the sensor
dynamics and greedily selecting informative locations in the environment. This
paper presents a non-greedy algorithm with suboptimality guarantees, which does
not rely on submodularity and takes the sensor dynamics into account. Our
method performs provably better than the widely used greedy one. Coupled with
linearization and model predictive control, it can be used to generate adaptive
policies for mobile sensors with non-linear sensing models. Applications in gas

Towards Energy Neutrality in Energy Harvesting Wireless Sensor Networks: A Case for Distributed Compressive Sensing?
This paper advocates the use of the emerging distributed compressive sensing
(DCS) paradigm in order to deploy energy harvesting (EH) wireless sensor
networks (WSN) with practical network lifetime and data gathering rates that
are substantially higher than the state-of-the-art. In particular, we argue
that there are two fundamental mechanisms in an EH WSN: i) the energy diversity
associated with the EH process that entails that the harvested energy can vary
from sensor node to sensor node, and ii) the sensing diversity associated with
the DCS process that entails that the energy consumption can also vary across
the sensor nodes without compromising data recovery. We also argue that such
mechanisms offer the means to match closely the energy demand to the energy
supply in order to unlock the possibility for energy-neutral WSNs that leverage
EH capability. A number of analytic and simulation results are presented in
