    Markov Decision Processes with Applications in Wireless Sensor Networks: A Survey

    Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) consist of autonomous and resource-limited devices. The devices cooperate to monitor one or more physical phenomena within an area of interest. WSNs operate as stochastic systems because of randomness in the monitored environments. For long service time and low maintenance cost, WSNs require adaptive and robust methods to address data exchange, topology formulation, resource and power optimization, sensing coverage and object detection, and security challenges. In these problems, sensor nodes are to make optimized decisions from a set of accessible strategies to achieve design goals. This survey reviews numerous applications of the Markov decision process (MDP) framework, a powerful decision-making tool to develop adaptive algorithms and protocols for WSNs. Furthermore, various solution methods are discussed and compared to serve as a guide for using MDPs in WSNs

    Robotic Wireless Sensor Networks

    In this chapter, we present a literature survey of an emerging, cutting-edge, and multi-disciplinary field of research at the intersection of Robotics and Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) which we refer to as Robotic Wireless Sensor Networks (RWSN). We define a RWSN as an autonomous networked multi-robot system that aims to achieve certain sensing goals while meeting and maintaining certain communication performance requirements, through cooperative control, learning and adaptation. While both of the component areas, i.e., Robotics and WSN, are very well-known and well-explored, there exist a whole set of new opportunities and research directions at the intersection of these two fields which are relatively or even completely unexplored. One such example would be the use of a set of robotic routers to set up a temporary communication path between a sender and a receiver that uses the controlled mobility to the advantage of packet routing. We find that there exist only a limited number of articles to be directly categorized as RWSN related works whereas there exist a range of articles in the robotics and the WSN literature that are also relevant to this new field of research. To connect the dots, we first identify the core problems and research trends related to RWSN such as connectivity, localization, routing, and robust flow of information. Next, we classify the existing research on RWSN as well as the relevant state-of-the-arts from robotics and WSN community according to the problems and trends identified in the first step. Lastly, we analyze what is missing in the existing literature, and identify topics that require more research attention in the future

    Pick and Place Without Geometric Object Models

    We propose a novel formulation of robotic pick and place as a deep reinforcement learning (RL) problem. Whereas most deep RL approaches to robotic manipulation frame the problem in terms of low level states and actions, we propose a more abstract formulation. In this formulation, actions are target reach poses for the hand and states are a history of such reaches. We show this approach can solve a challenging class of pick-place and regrasping problems where the exact geometry of the objects to be handled is unknown. The only information our method requires is: 1) the sensor perception available to the robot at test time; 2) prior knowledge of the general class of objects for which the system was trained. We evaluate our method using objects belonging to two different categories, mugs and bottles, both in simulation and on real hardware. Results show a major improvement relative to a shape primitives baseline

    An algorithm and system for finding the next best view in a 3-D object modeling task

    Sensor placement for 3-D modeling is a growing area of computer vision and robotics. The objective of a sensor placement system is to make task-directed decisions for optimal pose selection.This thesis proposes a Next Best View (NBV) solution to the sensor placement problem. Our algorithm computes the next best view by optimizing an objective function that measures the quantity of unknown information in each of a group of potential viewpoints. The potential views are either placed uniformly around the object or are calculated from the surface normals of the occupancy grid model. Foreach iteration, the optimal pose from the objective function calculation is selected to initiate the collection of new data. The model is incrementally updated from the information acquired in each new view. This process terminates when the number of recovered voxels ceases to increase, yielding the final model.We tested two different algorithms on 8 objects of various complexity, including objects with simple concave, simple hole, and complex hole self-occlusions. The First algorithm chooses new views optimally but is slow to compute. The second algorithm is fast but not as effective as the first algorithm. The two NBV algorithm successfully model all 8 of the tested objects. The models compare well visually with the original objects within the constraints of occupancy grid resolution.Objects of complexity greater than mentioned above were not tested due to the time required for modeling. A mathematical comparison was not made between the objects and their corresponding models since we are concerned only with the acquisition of complete models, not the accuracy of the models

    Multi-View Picking: Next-best-view Reaching for Improved Grasping in Clutter

    Camera viewpoint selection is an important aspect of visual grasp detection, especially in clutter where many occlusions are present. Where other approaches use a static camera position or fixed data collection routines, our Multi-View Picking (MVP) controller uses an active perception approach to choose informative viewpoints based directly on a distribution of grasp pose estimates in real time, reducing uncertainty in the grasp poses caused by clutter and occlusions. In trials of grasping 20 objects from clutter, our MVP controller achieves 80% grasp success, outperforming a single-viewpoint grasp detector by 12%.     A bistable soft gripper with mechanically embedded sensing and actuation for fast closed-loop grasping

    Soft robotic grippers are shown to be high effective for grasping unstructured objects with simple sensing and control strategies. However, they are still limited by their speed, sensing capabilities and actuation mechanism. Hence, their usage have been restricted in highly dynamic grasping tasks. This paper presents a soft robotic gripper with tunable bistable properties for sensor-less dynamic grasping. The bistable mechanism allows us to store arbitrarily large strain energy in the soft system which is then released upon contact. The mechanism also provides flexibility on the type of actuation mechanism as the grasping and sensing phase is completely passive. Theoretical background behind the mechanism is presented with finite element analysis to provide insights into design parameters. Finally, we experimentally demonstrate sensor-less dynamic grasping of an unknown object within 0.02 seconds, including the time to sense and actuate

    Unscented Bayesian Optimization for Safe Robot Grasping

    We address the robot grasp optimization problem of unknown objects considering uncertainty in the input space. Grasping unknown objects can be achieved by using a trial and error exploration strategy. Bayesian optimization is a sample efficient optimization algorithm that is especially suitable for this setups as it actively reduces the number of trials for learning about the function to optimize. In fact, this active object exploration is the same strategy that infants do to learn optimal grasps. One problem that arises while learning grasping policies is that some configurations of grasp parameters may be very sensitive to error in the relative pose between the object and robot end-effector. We call these configurations unsafe because small errors during grasp execution may turn good grasps into bad grasps. Therefore, to reduce the risk of grasp failure, grasps should be planned in safe areas. We propose a new algorithm, Unscented Bayesian optimization that is able to perform sample efficient optimization while taking into consideration input noise to find safe optima. The contribution of Unscented Bayesian optimization is twofold as if provides a new decision process that drives exploration to safe regions and a new selection procedure that chooses the optimal in terms of its safety without extra analysis or computational cost. Both contributions are rooted on the strong theory behind the unscented transformation, a popular nonlinear approximation method. We show its advantages with respect to the classical Bayesian optimization both in synthetic problems and in realistic robot grasp simulations. The results highlights that our method achieves optimal and robust grasping policies after few trials while the selected grasps remain in safe regions.Comment: conference pape
