    Is a Semantic Web Agent a Knowledge-Savvy Agent?

    The issue of knowledge sharing has permeated the field of distributed AI and in particular, its successor, multiagent systems. Through the years, many research and engineering efforts have tackled the problem of encoding and sharing knowledge without the need for a single, centralized knowledge base. However, the emergence of modern computing paradigms such as distributed, open systems have highlighted the importance of sharing distributed and heterogeneous knowledge at a larger scale—possibly at the scale of the Internet. The very characteristics that define the Semantic Web—that is, dynamic, distributed, incomplete, and uncertain knowledge—suggest the need for autonomy in distributed software systems. Semantic Web research promises more than mere management of ontologies and data through the definition of machine-understandable languages. The openness and decentralization introduced by multiagent systems and service-oriented architectures give rise to new knowledge management models, for which we can’t make a priori assumptions about the type of interaction an agent or a service may be engaged in, and likewise about the message protocols and vocabulary used. We therefore discuss the problem of knowledge management for open multi-agent systems, and highlight a number of challenges relating to the exchange and evolution of knowledge in open environments, which pertinent to both the Semantic Web and Multi Agent System communities alike

    Semantic Web Based Relational Database Access With Conflict Resolution

    This thesis focuses on (1) accessing relational databases through Semantic Web technologies and (2) resolving conflicts that usually arises when integrating data from heterogeneous source schemas and/or instances. In the first part of the thesis, we present an approach to access relational databases using Semantic Web technologies. Our approach is built on top of Ontop framework for Ontology Based Data Access. It extracts both Ontop mappings and an equivalent OWL ontology from an existing database schema. The end users can then access the underlying data source through SPARQL queries. The proposed approach takes into consideration the different relationships between the entities of the database schema when it extracts the mapping and the equivalent ontology. Instead of extracting a flat ontology that is an exact copy of the database schema, it extracts a rich ontology. The extracted ontology can also be used as an intermediary between a domain ontology and the underlying database schema. Our approach covers independent or master entities that do not have foreign references, dependent or detailed entities that have some foreign keys that reference other entities, recursive entities that contain some self references, binary join entities that relate two entities together, and n-ary join entities that map two or more entities in an n-ary relation. The implementation results indicate that the extracted Ontop mappings and ontology are accurate. i.e., end users can query all data (using SPARQL) from the underlying database source in the same way as if they have written SQL queries. In the second part, we present an overview of the conflict resolution approaches in both conventional data integration systems and collaborative data sharing communities. We focus on the latter as it supports the needs of scientific communities for data sharing and collaboration. We first introduce the purpose of the study, and present a brief overview of data integration. Next, we talk about the problem of inconsistent data in conventional integration systems, and we summarize the conflict handling strategies used to handle such inconsistent data. Then we focus on the problem of conflict resolution in collaborative data sharing communities. A collaborative data sharing community is a group of users who agree to share a common database instance, such that all users have access to the shared instance and they can add to, update, and extend this shared instance. We discuss related works that adopt different conflict resolution strategies in the area of collaborative data sharing, and we provide a comparison between them. We find that a Collaborative Data Sharing System (CDSS) can best support the needs of certain communities such as scientific communities. We then discuss some open research opportunities to improve the efficiency and performance of the CDSS. Finally, we summarize our work so far towards achieving these open research directions

    Data Management in the APPA System

    International audienceCombining Grid and P2P technologies can be exploited to provide high-level data sharing in large-scale distributed environments. However, this combination must deal with two hard problems: the scale of the network and the dynamic behavior of the nodes. In this paper, we present our solution in APPA (Atlas Peer-to-Peer Architecture), a data management system with high-level services for building large-scale distributed applications. We focus on data availability and data discovery which are two main requirements for implementing large-scale Grids. We have validated APPA's services through a combination of experimentation over Grid5000, which is a very large Grid experimental platform, and simulation using SimJava. The results show very good performance in terms of communication cost and response time

    Summary Management in P2P Systems

    International audienceSharing huge, massively distributed databases in P2P systems is inherently difficult. As the amount of stored data increases, data localization techniques become no longer suf- ficient. A practical approach is to rely on compact database summaries rather than raw database records, whose access is costly in large P2P systems. In this paper, we consider summaries that are synthetic, multidimensional views with two main virtues. First, they can be directly queried and used to approximately answer a query without exploring the original data. Second, as semantic indexes, they support locating relevant nodes based on data content. Our main contribution is to define a summary model for P2P systems, and the appropriate algorithms for summary management. Our performance evaluation shows that the cost of query routing is minimized, while incurring a low cost of summary maintenance

    In modern enterprises, workflow technology is commonly used for business process automation. Established business processes represent successful business practice and become a crucial part of corporate assets. In the Internet era, electronic business is chosen by more and more organisations as a preferred way of conducting business practice. In response to the increasing demands for cross-organisational business automation, especially those raised by the B2B electronic commerce community, the concept of collaboration between automated business processes, i.e. workflow collaboration, is emerging. Otherwise, automation would be confined within individual organisations and cross-organisational collaboration would still have to be carried out manually. However, much of the previous research work overlooks the acquisition of the compatible workflows at build time and simply assumes that compatibility is achieved through face-toface negotiation followed by a design from scratch approach that creates collaborative workflows based on the agreement resulted from the negotiation. The resource-intensive and error-prone approach can hardly keep up with the pace of today’s marketplace with increasing transaction volume and complexity. This thesis identifies the requirements for cross-organisational workflow collaboration (COWCO) through an integrated approach, proposes a comprehensive supporting framework, explains the key enabling techniques of the framework, and implements and evaluates them in the form of a prototype system – COWCO-Guru. With the support of such a framework, cross-organisational workflow collaboration can be managed and conducted with reduced human effort, which will further facilitate cross-organisational e-business, especially B2B e-commerce practices

    A Concurrency Control Method Based on Commitment Ordering in Mobile Databases

    Disconnection of mobile clients from server, in an unclear time and for an unknown duration, due to mobility of mobile clients, is the most important challenges for concurrency control in mobile database with client-server model. Applying pessimistic common classic methods of concurrency control (like 2pl) in mobile database leads to long duration blocking and increasing waiting time of transactions. Because of high rate of aborting transactions, optimistic methods aren`t appropriate in mobile database. In this article, OPCOT concurrency control algorithm is introduced based on optimistic concurrency control method. Reducing communications between mobile client and server, decreasing blocking rate and deadlock of transactions, and increasing concurrency degree are the most important motivation of using optimistic method as the basis method of OPCOT algorithm. To reduce abortion rate of transactions, in execution time of transactions` operators a timestamp is assigned to them. In other to checking commitment ordering property of scheduler, the assigned timestamp is used in server on time of commitment. In this article, serializability of OPCOT algorithm scheduler has been proved by using serializability graph. Results of evaluating simulation show that OPCOT algorithm decreases abortion rate and waiting time of transactions in compare to 2pl and optimistic algorithms.Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures, Journal: International Journal of Database Management Systems (IJDMS
