Combining Faceted Search with Data-analytic Visualizations on Top of a SPARQL Endpoint

This paper discusses practical experiences on creating data-analytic visualizations in a browser, on top of a SPARQL endpoint based on the results of faceted search. Four use cases related to Digital Humanities research in proposography are discussed where the SPARQL Faceter tool was used and extended in different ways. The Faceter tool allows the user to select a group of people with shared properties, e.g., people with the same place of birth, gender, profession, or employer. The filtered data can then be visualized, e.g., as column charts, with business graphics, sankey diagrams, or on a map. The use cases examine the potential of visualization as well as automated knowledge discovery in Digital Humanities research.Peer reviewe

The Figure of Maria Montessori (1870–1952) in Open Reference Electronic Editions

У статті проаналізовано відображення у відкритих довідкових електронних виданнях постаті Марії Монтессорі – видатної дослідниці у галузі психології та філософії, педагогіки й психіатрії, педагогині, яка розробила програму навчання, спираючись на власні наукові дослідження. Зокрема, розглянуто зміст публікацій про М. Монтессорі у електронних енциклопедіях в українському інформаційному просторі та закордонних енциклопедичних виданнях, до яких є вільний доступ. Для цього вивчено 7 енциклопедій універсального характеру («Велика сучасна енциклопедія», «Велика українська енциклопедія», «Енциклопедія Треккані», «Британіка», «Енциклопедія Брокгауза», «Педагогічна енциклопедія», «Велика данська енциклопедія»), 4 словники, присвячених історії, культурі, визначним постатям («Біографічний словник італійців», «Словник Британських педагогів», «Біографічний словник американських педагогів», «ДБЕ: біографічний словник освітян 1800‒2000 рр.» та онлайн-портал данських довідників. Проаналізовано створення та функціонування в інформаційному просторі електронних біографічних ресурсів. Досліджено, що найчастіше електронні енциклопедії, словники, а це ‒ цифрові аналоги друкованих видань ‒ поєднують відомості з різних джерел. На підставі дослідження розглянуто меню сайтів, схарактеризовано контент наповнення довідкових видань: праці М. Монтессорі, гіперпосилання на них, візуальні матеріали, праці дослідників її спадщини. Закцентовано увагу на онлайн-портал датських довідників, на сторінках якого зібрано оригінальні повнотекстові статті данських професіоналів і науковців про педагогічний доробок Монтессорі. Визначено, що розглянуті довідкові електронні видання (енциклопедії, словники) є важливим складником загальної репрезентованої інформації у відкритому доступі, відображають суспільні події та явища, фіксують історичні періоди і у лаконічній формі висвітлюють інформацію про Марію Монтессорі, а також є потужним базисом для збереження культурної спадщини певної нації, зокрема педагогічної спадщини італійської педагогині М. Монтессорі.The article analyzes the reflection in open reference electronic editions of the figure of Maria Montessori - an outstanding researcher in the field of psychology and philosophy, pedagogy and psychiatry, a pedagogue who developed a training program based on her own scientific research. In particular, the content of publications about M. Montessori in electronic encyclopedias in the Ukrainian information space and foreign encyclopedic editions to which there is free access was considered. For this, 7 encyclopedias of a universal nature were studied («Great Modern Encyclopedia», «Great Ukrainian Encyclopedia», «Trekkani Encyclopedia», «Britannica», «Brockhaus Encyclopedia», «Pedagogical Encyclopedia», «Great Danish Encyclopedia»), 4 dictionaries dedicated to history, culture, notable figures («Biographical Dictionary of Italians», «Dictionary of British Teachers», «Biographical Dictionary of American Teachers», «DBE: Biographical Dictionary of Educators 1800‒2000», and the online portal of Danish directories. The creation and functioning of electronic biographical resources in the information space is analyzed. It has been studied that most often electronic encyclopedias and dictionaries, which are digital analogues of printed publications, combine information from different sources. On the basis of the research, the menu of sites was considered, the content of reference publications was characterized: the works of M. Montessori, hyperlinks to them, visual materials, works of researchers of her heritage. Attention is focused on the online portal of Danish reference books, on the pages of which are collected original full-text articles by Danish professionals and scientists about Montessori's pedagogical development. It was determined that the considered reference electronic publications (encyclopedias, dictionaries) are an important component of the general represented information in open access, reflect social events and phenomena, record historical periods and in a concise form highlight information about Maria Montessori, and are also a powerful basis for preserving cultural heritage of a certain nation, in particular, the pedagogical heritage of Italian pedagogy M. Montessori

Rediscovering Ranganathan: A Prismatic View of His Life through the Knowledge Graph Spectrum

The present study puts forward a novel biographical knowledge graph (KG) on Prof. S. R. Ranganathan, one of the pioneering figures in the Library and Information Science (LIS) domain. It has been found that most of the relevant facts about Ranganathan exist in a variety of resources (e.g., books, essays, journal articles, websites, blogs, etc.), offering information in a fragmented and piecemeal way. With this dedicated KG (henceforth known as RKG), we hope to furnish a 360-degree view of his life and achievements. To the best of our knowledge, such a dedicated representation is unparalleled in its scope and coverage: using state-of-the-art technology for anyone to openly access, use/re-use, and contribute. Inspired by Ranganathan's theories and ideas, the KG was developed using a "facet-based methodology" at two levels: in the identification of the vital biographical aspects and the development of the ontological model. Finally, with this study, we call for a community-driven effort to enhance the KG and pay homage to the Father of Library Science on the hundredth anniversary of his revitalizing the LIS domain through his enduring participation.Comment: 22 pages, 16 figure

Analyzing biography collections historiographically as Linked Data : Case National Biography of Finland

Biographical collections are available on the Web for close reading. However, the underlying texts can also be used for data analysis and distant reading, if the documents are available as data. Such data is usable for creating intelligent user interfaces to biographical data, including Digital Humanities tooling for visualizations, data analysis, and knowledge discovery in biographical and prosopographical research. In this paper, we re-use biographical collection data from a historiographical perspective for analyzing the underlying collection. For example: What kind of people have been included in the collection? Does the language used for describing female biographees differ from that for men? As a case study, the Finnish National Biography, available as part of the Linked Open Data service and semantic portal BiographySampo - Finnish Biographies on the Semantic Web is used. The analyses show interesting results related to, e.g., how specific prosopographical groups, such as women or professional groups are represented and portrayed. Various novel statistics and network analyses of the biographees are presented. Our analyses give new insights to the editors of the National Biography as well as to researchers in biography, prosopography, and historiography. The presented approach can be applied also to similar biography collections in other countries.Peer reviewe

Створення інформаційно-бібліографічного ресурсу «Видатні педагоги України та світу» та його вплив на розвиток цифрової гуманітаристики

The article reveals the specifics of creation, content, functions and value of the electronic information and bibliographic resource "Outstanding Educators of Ukraine and the World" of V. O. Sukhomlynskyi State Scientific and Pedagogical Library of the National Academy of Educational Sciences of Ukraine in a comparative dimension with similar Ukrainian and foreign electronic biographical resources. The goals of the development of the electronic biographical resource have been formulated; the specifics of formation of its content and structure have been characterized; the importance of electronic biographical resources in the domestic and foreign educational and scientific space as a component of digital humanities has been substantiated. The influence of the use of electronic biographical resources on public opinion and on a person in the educational dimension has been investigated. It has been proven that in the context of the digital transformation of the scientific sphere and the integration of the Ukrainian education into the European educational and scientific space, the development of electronic information and specialized bibliographic resources, dedicated to well-known personalities in the sphere of education, history and culture, got significant repercussions. We have substantiated why the electronic resource "Outstanding Educators of Ukraine and the World", containing information about Ukrainian and foreign educators and public figures, is a unique specialist resource without analogues. It is a significant contribution to the development of digital pedagogical biographics and it makes it possible, through the prism of scientific biographies, to trace systematically the development of the Ukrainian and foreign education, pedagogical thought in both macrohistorical and microhistorical dimensions and to contribute to the restoration of the national pedagogical memory. The representation via the electronic resource of the generalized knowledge about the humanistic ideas of the Ukrainian and foreign educators and public figures of the past is of great importance for education in general, in particular for pedagogical education in Ukraine, namely in the system of professional training; it is a source of formation of a pedagogical worldview in students who will be teachers in the future, increasing their spiritual culture in the face of global civilizational challenges. We have revealed that the information and bibliographic resource requires further updating, taking into account the new achievements of the Ukrainian and foreign historical, educational and biographical studies and the latest information technologies. The priority tasks for improving the electronic resource have been identified, in particular: the prospects for the content and the ways of updating information and making qualitative changes in the functionality of the electronic educational resource.У статті розкрито особливості створення, зміст, функції, значення електронного інформаційно-бібліографічного ресурсу «Видатні педагоги України та світу» Державної науково-педагогічної бібліотеки України імені В. О. Сухомлинського Національної академії педагогічних наук України у порівняльному вимірі з аналогічними світовими та українськими електронними біографічними ресурсами. Виявлено причини, сформульовано цілі розроблення електронних біографічних ресурсів; схарактеризовано особливості формування контенту ресурсів, їх структури; аргументовано значення електронних біографічних ресурсів у вітчизняному та зарубіжному освітньо-науковому просторі як складника цифрової гуманітаристики. Досліджено вплив використання електронних біографічних ресурсів на суспільну думку та людину в освітньому вимірі. Доведено, що в умовах цифрової трансформації наукової сфери та інтеграції української освіти до європейського освітньо-наукового простору набуло значного резонансу розроблення електронних інформаційно-бібліографічних ресурсів галузевого спрямування, присвячених відомим діячам освіти, історії, культури. Аргументовано, що електронний ресурс «Видатні педагоги України та світу», котрий містить інформацію про українських і зарубіжних педагогів і освітян, є унікальним галузевим ресурсом, аналогів якому не знайдено. Він є вагомим внеском у розвиток цифрової педагогічної біографіки й дозволяє крізь призму наукових біографій системно простежувати розвиток української і зарубіжної освіти, педагогічної думки як у макроісторичних, так і в мікроісторичних вимірах, сприяє відновленню національної педагогічної пам’яті. Репрезентація за допомогою електронного ресурсу узагальненого знання про гуманістичні ідеї українських і зарубіжних педагогів чи освітян минулого має велике значення для освіти загалом, зокрема педагогічної освіти України, а саме в системі професійної підготовки, та є джерелом формування в студентів – майбутніх педагогів – педагогічного світогляду, підвищення їх духовної культури в умовах глобальних цивілізаційних викликів. З’ясовано, що інформаційно-бібліографічний ресурс потребує подальшого оновлення з урахуванням нових здобутків українських і зарубіжних історико-освітніх, історичних та біографічних студій, новітніх інформаційних технологій тощо. Визначено пріоритетні завдання щодо вдосконалення електронного ресурсу, зокрема перспективи змістового наповнення, шляхи оновлення відомостей та внесення якісних змін до функціоналу цифрового науково-освітнього ресурсу

Semantic national biography of Finland

This paper presents the vision of publishing and utilizing textual biographies as Linked (Open) Data on the Semantic Web. As a case study, we publish the live stories of the National Biography of Finland, created by the Finnish Literature Society, as semantic, i.e., machine "understandable" metadata in a SPARQL endpoint using the Linked Data Finland (LDF.fi) service. On top of the data service various Digital Humanities applications are built. The applications include searching and studying individual personal histories as well as historical research of groups of persons using methods of prosopography. The biographical data is enriched by extracting events from unstructured and semi-structured texts, and by linking entities internally and to external data sources. A faceted semantic search engine is provided for filtering groups of people from the data for prosopographical research. An extension of the event-based CIDOC CRM ontology is used as the underlying data model, where lives are seen as chains of interlinked events populated from the data of the biographies and additional data sources, such as museum collections, library databases, and archives.Peer reviewe
