    A semantic context management framework on mobile device

    We present a semantic context management framework named ContextTorrent, which can make various types of context information be semantically searchable and sharable among local and remote context-aware applications. We implement this framework on the Google Android platform with its elegant application support. An open source RDF parser has been extended to effectively get RDF triples from files or over the network. Three embedded database systems were evaluated for storing ontology represented contexts in the resource-constrained mobile devices. We use the FOAF ontology schema and a synthetic data set of up to 2500 records to evaluate the context query and storage performance.     Modularizing application and database evolution - an aspect-oriented framework for orthogonal persistence

    In the maintenance of software applications, database evolution is one common difficulty. In object‐oriented databases, this process comprises schema evolution and instance adaptation. Both tasks usually require significant effort from programmers and database administrators. In this paper, we propose orthogonal persistence and aspect‐oriented programming to support semi‐transparent database evolution. A default mechanism for instance evolution is defined, but the user may provide modularized solutions using the aspect‐oriented paradigm. We present our framework AOF4OOP to test the feasibility of our proposed approach. This prototype allows programmes to transparently access data in other versions of the database schema.     High Performance Frequent Subgraph Mining on Transactional Datasets

    Graph data mining has been a crucial as well as inevitable area of research. Large amounts of graph data are produced in many areas, such as Bioinformatics, Cheminformatics, Social Networks, and Web etc. Scalable graph data mining methods are getting increasingly popular and necessary due to increased graph complexities. Frequent subgraph mining is one such area where the task is to find overly recurring patterns/subgraphs. To tackle this problem, many main memory-based methods were proposed, which proved to be inefficient as the data size grew exponentially over time. In the past few years several research groups have attempted to handle the frequent subgraph mining (FSM) problem in multiple ways. Many authors have tried to achieve better performance using Graphic Processing Units (GPUs) which has multi-fold improvement over in-memory while dealing with large datasets. Later, Google\u27s MapReduce model with the Hadoop framework proved to be a major breakthrough in high performance large batch processing. Although MapReduce came with many benefits, its disk I/O and non-iterative style model could not help much for FSM domain since subgraph mining process is an iterative approach. In recent years, Spark has emerged to be the De Facto industry standard with its distributed in-memory computing capability. This is a right fit solution for iterative style of programming as well.     The exploration of a category theory-based virtual Geometrical product specification system for design and manufacturing

    In order to ensure quality of products and to facilitate global outsourcing, almost all the so-called “world-class” manufacturing companies nowadays are applying various tools and methods to maintain the consistency of a product’s characteristics throughout its manufacturing life cycle. Among these, for ensuring the consistency of the geometric characteristics, a tolerancing language − the Geometrical Product Specification (GPS) has been widely adopted to precisely transform the functional requirements from customers into manufactured workpieces expressed as tolerance notes in technical drawings. Although commonly acknowledged by industrial users as one of the most successful efforts in integrating existing manufacturing life-cycle standards, current GPS implementations and software packages suffer from several drawbacks in their practical use, possibly the most significant, the difficulties in inferring the data for the “best” solutions. The problem stemmed from the foundation of data structures and knowledge-based system design. This indicates that there need to be a “new” software system to facilitate GPS applications. The presented thesis introduced an innovative knowledge-based system − the VirtualGPS − that provides an integrated GPS knowledge platform based on a stable and efficient database structure with knowledge generation and accessing facilities. The system focuses on solving the intrinsic product design and production problems by acting as a virtual domain expert through translating GPS standards and rules into the forms of computerized expert advices and warnings. Furthermore, this system can be used as a training tool for young and new engineers to understand the huge amount of GPS standards in a relative “quicker” manner. The thesis started with a detailed discussion of the proposed categorical modelling mechanism, which has been devised based on the Category Theory. It provided a unified mechanism for knowledge acquisition and representation, knowledge-based system design, and database schema modelling. As a core part for assessing this knowledge-based system, the implementation of the categorical Database Management System (DBMS) is also presented in this thesis. The focus then moved on to demonstrate the design and implementation of the proposed VirtualGPS system. The tests and evaluations of this system were illustrated in Chapter 6. Finally, the thesis summarized the contributions to knowledge in Chapter 7. After thoroughly reviewing the project, the conclusions reached construe that the III entire VirtualGPS system was designed and implemented to conform to Category Theory and object-oriented programming rules. The initial tests and performance analyses show that the system facilitates the geometric product manufacturing operations and benefits the manufacturers and engineers alike from function designs, to a manufacturing and verification

    Model-driven generative programming for BIS mobile applications

    The burst on the availability of smart phones based on the Android platform calls for cost-effective techniques to generate mobile apps for general purpose, distributed business information systems (BIS). To mitigate this problem our research aims at applying model-driven techniques to automatically generate usable prototypes with a sound, maintainable, architecture. Following three base principles: model-based generation, separation of concerns, paradigm seamlessness, we try to answer the main guiding question – how to reduce development time and cost by transforming a given domain model into an Android application? To answer this question we propose to develop an application that follows a generative approach for mobile BIS apps that will mitigate the identified problems. Its input is a platform independent model (PIM), with business rules specified in OCL (Object Constraint Language). We adopted the Design Science Research methodology, that helps gaining problem understanding, identifying systemically appropriate solutions, and in effectively evaluating new and innovative solutions. To better evaluate our solution, besides resorting to third party tools to test specific components integration, we demonstrated its usage and evaluated how well it mitigates a subset of the identified problems in an observational study (we presented our generated apps to an outside audience in a controlled environment to study our model-based centered and, general apps understandability) and communicated its effectiveness to researchers and practitioners.O grande surto de disponibilidade de dispositivos mĂłveis para a plataforma Android requer, tĂ©cnicas generativas de desenvolvimento de aplicaçÔes para sistemas comuns e/ou distribuĂ­dos de informação empresariais/negĂłcio, que otimizem a relação custo-benefĂ­cio. Seguindo para tal trĂȘs princĂ­pios base: geração baseada no modelo, separação de aspetos, desenvolvimento sem soturas (sem mudança de paradigma), tentamos dar resposta Ă  pergunta orientadora – como reduzir o tempo e custo de desenvolvimento de uma aplicação Android por transformação de um dado modelo de domĂ­nio?     Exploring regularities in software with statistical models and their applications

    Software systems are becoming popular. They are used with different platforms for different applications. Software systems are developed with support from programming languages, which help developers work conveniently. Programming languages can have different paradigms with different form, syntactic structures, keywords, and representation ways. In many cases, however, programming languages are similar in different important aspects: 1. They are used to support description of specific tasks, 2. Source codes are written in languages and includes a limit set of distinctive tokens, many tokens are repeated like keywords, function calls, and 3. They follow specific syntactic rules to make machine understanding. Those points also respect the similarity between programming language and natural language. Due to its critical role in many applications, natural language processing (NLP) has been studied much and given many promising results like automatic cross-language translation, speech-to-text, information searching, etc. It is interesting to observe if there are similar characteristics between natural language and programming language and whether techniques in NLP can be reused for programming language processing? Recent works in software engineering (SE) shows that their similarities between NLP and programming language processing and techniques in NLP can be reused for PLP. This dissertation introduces my works with contributions in study of characteristics of programming languages, the models which employed them and the main applications that show the usefulness of the proposed models. Study in both three aspects has drawn interests from software engineering community and received awards due to their innovation and applicability. \u27 I hope that this dissertation will bring a systematic view of how advantage techniques in natural language processing and machine learning can be re-used and give huge benefit for programming language processing, and how those techniques are adapted with characteristics of programming language and software systems
