An agent-based framework for selection of partners in dynamic virtual enterprises
Advances in computer networking technology and open system standards have made practically
feasible to create and manage virtual enterprises. A virtual enterprise, VE, is usually defined as a
temporary alliance of enterprises that come together to share their skills, core competencies, and
resources in order to better respond to business opportunities, and whose cooperation is supported by
computer networks.
The materialization of this paradigm, although enabled by recent advances in communication
technologies, computer networks and logistics, requires an appropriate architectural framework and
support tools.
In this paper we propose an agent-based model of a dynamic VE to support the different selection
processes that are used in selecting the partners for a dynamic VE, where the partners of a VE are
represented by agents. Such a framework will form the basis for tools that provide automated support
for creation, and operation, of dynamic virtual enterprises

Session - MP-Fd Supply Chain Management & Logistics 4: cie182hk-1Conference Theme: Soft Computing Techniques for Advanced Manufacturing and Service SystemsIn response to the global business competitive environment, it is common for several companies to participate in a virtual enterprise (VE) to cooperate and collaborate dynamically to complete a common business opportunity. This paper proposes an agent-based negotiation model to support the partner selection process in a VE. To begin with, the VE partner selection problem is abstracted as a buyer-seller relationship such that the VE initiator is the buyer and the VE partners are sellers or vice verse. In the multi-agent system (MAS) that supports the proposed negotiation model, autonomous agents are established to represent various parties and functions of the VE. For instance, a buyer agent represents the VE initiator and the potential partners are represented by seller agents. Thus, the VE partner evaluation and selection problem is the process of finding the partners that are able to provide the buyer with the right quality products and services at the right price and at the right time. Situational Enterprise Services
The ability to rapidly find potential business partners as well as rapidly set up a collaborative business process is desirable in the face of market turbulence. Collaborative business processes are increasingly dependent on the integration of business information systems. Traditional linking of business processes has a large ad hoc character. Implementing situational enterprise services in an appropriate way will deliver the business more flexibility, adaptability and agility.
Service-oriented architectures (SOA) are rapidly becoming the dominant computing paradigm. It is now being embraced by organizations everywhere as the key to business agility. Web 2.0 technologies such as AJAX on the other hand provide good user interactions for successful service discovery, selection, adaptation, invocation and service construction. They also balance automatic integration of services and human interactions, disconnecting content from presentation in the delivery of the service. Another Web technology, such as semantic Web, makes automatic service discovery, mediation and composition possible. Integrating SOA, Web 2.0 Technologies and Semantic Web into a service-oriented virtual enterprise connects business processes in a much more horizontal fashion. To be able run these services consistently across the enterprise, an enterprise infrastructure that provides enterprise architecture and security foundation is necessary.
The world is constantly changing. So does the business environment. An agile enterprise needs to be able to quickly and cost-effectively change how it does business and who it does business with. Knowing, adapting to diffident situations is an important aspect of todayâs business environment. The changes in an operating environment can happen implicitly and explicitly. The changes can be caused by different factors in the application domain. Changes can also happen for the purpose of organizing information in a better way. Changes can be further made according to the users' needs such as incorporating additional functionalities. Handling and managing diffident situations of service-oriented enterprises are important aspects of business environment. In the chapter, we will investigate how to apply new Web technologies to develop, deploy and executing enterprise services
Tools for enterprises collaboration in virtual enterprises
Virtual Enterprise (VE) is an organizational collaboration concept which provides a competitive edge in the globalized business environment. The life cycle of a VE consists of four stages i.e. opportunity identification (Pre-Creation), partner selection (Creation), operation and dissolution. The success of VEs depends upon the efficient execution of their VE-lifecycles along with knowledge enhancement for the partner enterprises to facilitate the future formation of efficient VEs. This research aims to study the different issues which occur in the VE lifecycle and provides a platform for the formation of high performance enterprises and VEs.
In the pre-creation stage, enterprises look for suitable partners to create their VE and to exploit a market opportunity. This phase requires explicit and implicit information extraction from enterprise data bases (ECOS-ontology) for the identification of suitable partners. A description logic (DL) based query system is developed to extract explicit and implicit information and to identify potential partners for the creation of the VE.
In the creation phase, the identified partners are analysed using different risks paradigms and a cooperative game theoretic approach is used to develop a revenue sharing mechanism based on enterprises inputs and risk minimization for optimal partner selection.
In the operation phases, interoperability remains a key issue for seamless transfer of knowledge information and data. DL-based ontology mapping is applied in this research to provide interoperability in the VE between enterprises with different domains of expertise.
In the dissolution stage, knowledge acquired in the VE lifecycle needs to be disseminated among the enterprises to enhance their competitiveness. A DL-based ontology merging approach is provided to accommodate new knowledge with existing data bases with logical consistency.
Finally, the proposed methodologies are validated using the case study. The results obtained in the case study illustrate the applicability and effectiveness of proposed methodologies in each stage of the VE life cycle
Modeling Virtual Organization Architecture with the Virtual Organization Breeding Methodology
While Enterprise Architecture Modeling (EAM) methodologies become more and
more popular, an EAM methodology tailored to the needs of virtual organizations
(VO) is still to be developed. Among the most popular EAM methodologies, TOGAF
has been chosen as the basis for a new EAM methodology taking into account
characteristics of VOs presented in this paper. In this new methodology,
referred as Virtual Organization Breeding Methodology (VOBM), concepts
developed within the ECOLEAD project, e.g. the concept of Virtual Breeding
Environment (VBE) or the VO creation schema, serve as fundamental elements for
development of VOBM. VOBM is a generic methodology that should be adapted to a
given VBE. VOBM defines the structure of VBE and VO architectures in a
service-oriented environment, as well as an architecture development method for
virtual organizations (ADM4VO). Finally, a preliminary set of tools and methods

Implementation of virtual manufacturing by a technology licensing company
NoThe paper considers the implementation of a virtual manufacturing system as an alternative to outward technology licensing in a high technology industrial sector. Brief theoretical definition and description of the two strategy options is provided to give background and context. This is followed by empirical material from a longitudinal case study of a company that has developed a virtual manufacturing system in addition to its pre-existing outward technology licensing business stream. A summary account of the company history and development is followed by description of the virtual manufacturing proposal. Analysis of this identified a number of competencies that would be required in order to succeed. The final part of the paper describes the company's response to this analysis and discusses early implementation of the virtual system. It is shown that implementation of the proposal has represented a positive response to the business challenges facing the company
A COLLABORATIVE MODEL FOR VIRTUAL ENTERPRISE
Collaborative process characteristics have three dimensions: actors, activities and actionâs logic. The aim of this paper is to present a virtual portalâs model that helps managing consortiums. Dynamic management for business processes modeling & execution in workflows
Contemporary workflow-management systems cannot represent change or evolution
of business processes. When a change is needed due to external reason, an
offline procedure is invoked in order to create a new workflow engine template
for the future instances in the workflow enactment module. The standard
interfaces do not deal with the business process metadata in a way that can
actually change it as a reaction to inbound knowledge. There are many relevant
cases, especially in the virtual enterprise arena, where the business process
is not deterministic and is influenced by external parameters (such as the
selection of virtual partners), so the knowledge of what should be done is
available, however it is external to the system. There is a need to develop a
modeling mechanism that enables to transfer process definitions in an
automatic way, without the need for human interference. One way of confronting
with these issues is the use of a rule-based engine to monitor business
process execution. This engine will contain internal meta-rules that refer to
metadata entities, i.e. rules that describe how to act on other rules
(business process routing) when a change is detected, while executing all
needed consistency checks
Agile and Pro-Active Public Administration as a Collaborative Networked Organization
In highly competitive, globalized economies and societies of always-on-line
people intensively using the Internet and mobile phones, public administrations
have to adapt to new challenges. Enterprises and citizens expect public
administrations to be agile and pro-active to foster development. A way to
achieve agility and pro-activity is application of a model of Collaborative
Network Organizations in its two forms: Virtual Organizations (VO) and Virtual
Organization Breeding Environments (VOBE). In the paper, advantages are shown
of public administration playing a role of a Virtual Organization customer on
the one hand, and a Virtual Organization member on the other hand. It is also
shown how public administration playing a role of a Virtual Organization
Breeding Environment may improve its agility and promote advanced technologies
and management methods among local organizations. It is argued in the paper
that public administration should provide a Virtual Organization Breeding
