Observation-based Cooperation Enforcement in Ad Hoc Networks
Ad hoc networks rely on the cooperation of the nodes participating in the
network to forward packets for each other. A node may decide not to cooperate
to save its resources while still using the network to relay its traffic. If
too many nodes exhibit this behavior, network performance degrades and
cooperating nodes may find themselves unfairly loaded. Most previous efforts to
counter this behavior have relied on further cooperation between nodes to
exchange reputation information about other nodes. If a node observes another
node not participating correctly, it reports this observation to other nodes
who then take action to avoid being affected and potentially punish the bad
node by refusing to forward its traffic. Unfortunately, such second-hand
reputation information is subject to false accusations and requires maintaining
trust relationships with other nodes. The objective of OCEAN is to avoid this
trust-management machinery and see how far we can get simply by using direct
first-hand observations of other nodes' behavior. We find that, in many
scenarios, OCEAN can do as well as, or even better than, schemes requiring
second-hand reputation exchanges. This encouraging result could possibly help
obviate solutions requiring trust-management for some contexts.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figure
MagicPairing: Apple's Take on Securing Bluetooth Peripherals
Device pairing in large Internet of Things (IoT) deployments is a challenge
for device manufacturers and users. Bluetooth offers a comparably smooth trust
on first use pairing experience. Bluetooth, though, is well-known for security
flaws in the pairing process. In this paper, we analyze how Apple improves the
security of Bluetooth pairing while still maintaining its usability and
specification compliance. The proprietary protocol that resides on top of
Bluetooth is called MagicPairing. It enables the user to pair a device once
with Apple's ecosystem and then seamlessly use it with all their other Apple
devices. We analyze both, the security properties provided by this protocol, as
well as its implementations. In general, MagicPairing could be adapted by other
IoT vendors to improve Bluetooth security. Even though the overall protocol is
well-designed, we identified multiple vulnerabilities within Apple's
implementations with over-the-air and in-process fuzzing
The system architecture of the Pocket Companion
In the Moby Dick project we design the architecture of a so-called Pocket Companion. It is a small personal portable computer with wireless communication facilities for every day use. The typical use of the Pocket Companion induces a number of requirements concerning security, performance, energy consumption, communication and size. We have shown that these requirements are interrelated and can only be met optimal with one single architecture. The Pocket Companion architecture consists of a central switch with a security module surrounded by several modules. The Pocket Companion is a personal machine. Communication, and particularly wireless communication, is essential for the system to support electronic transactions. Such a system requires a good security infrastructure not only for safeguarding personal data, but also to allow safe (financial) transactions. The integration of a security module in the Pocket Companion architecture provides the basis for a secure environment.\ud
Because battery life is limited and battery weight is an important factor for the size and the weight of the Pocket Companion, energy consumption plays a crucial role in the architecture. An important theme of the architecture is: enough performance for minimal energy consumption

The Internet of Things makes possible to connect each everyday object to the
Internet, making computing pervasive like never before. From a security and
privacy perspective, this tsunami of connectivity represents a disaster, which
makes each object remotely hackable. We claim that, in order to tackle this
issue, we need to address a new challenge in security: education

Moreover, for foreign firms to gain access to WAPI technology, they would need to partner with one of two-dozen Chinese firms designated by the Chinese government. The policy ostensibly grew out of security concerns regarding Wi-Fi, although it is unclear whether WAPI is more secure. Beijing has now indefinitely postponed the implementation of this policy, but WAPI is still relevant. This iBrief argues that WAPI is illustrative of many Chinese technical barriers to trade in the high-tech sector, and evaluates this policy\u27s consistency with China\u27s WTO obligations

Pendekatan konstruktif dalam inovasi pengajaran dan pembelajaran Bahasa Melayu di Kolej Vokasional
Pendekatan konstruktif adalah pendekatan pengajaran dan pembelajaran yang
berpusatkan pelajar manakala inovasi pengajaran pula dikaitkan dengan kaedah
pengajaran yang terbaru demi mengukuhkan pemahaman pelajar. Pembelajaran
berasaskan pendekatan konstruktif merupakan elemen yang penting dan perlu
difahami oleh guru-guru bagi memantapkan proses pengajaran dan pembelajaran
sesuai dengan peredaran masa dan menjayakan proses tranformasi pendidikan
negara. Objektif kajian ini dijalankan untuk mengenal pasti pemahaman guru-guru
bahasa Melayu berkaitan inovasi, mengenal pasti perbezaan yang wujud antara guru
lelaki dan guru perempuan dalam mengamalkan inovasi, pengkaji juga melihat
adakah wujud perbezaan antara guru baru dan guru yang sudah berpengalaman
dalam aspek mengaplikasikan inovasi serta mengenal pasti kekangan-kekangan yang
dialami oleh para guru untuk mengaplikasikan inovasi di sekolah. Seramai 63 orang
guru bahasa Melayu dari lapan buah kolej vokasional telah dipilih sebagai responden
dalam kajian ini. Data dianalisis menggunakan perisian Winsteps 3.69.1.11 dengan
pendekatan Model Pengukuran Rasch. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahawa guruïżœguru bahasa Melayu memahami kepentingan inovasi dalam pengajaran dan
pembelajaran. Hasil kajian juga menunjukkan guru-guru perempuan lebih banyak
menerapkan unsur inovasi dalam pengajaran berbanding guru lelaki. Walaupun
begitu, aspek pengalaman tidak menunjukkan perbezaan dari segi pengamalan
inovasi sama ada guru baru ataupun guru yang sudah berpengalaman. Pengkaji juga
mengenal pasti beberapa kekangan yang dialami oleh guru-guru untuk mengamalkan
inovasi ini. Sebagai langkah untuk menangani masalah berkenaan, beberapa
cadangan telah dikemukakan oleh pengkaji bagi memastikan guru-guru dapat
merealisasikan proses pengajaran berkesan dengan penerapan inovasi mengikut
model pendekatan konstruktif. Pengkaji berharap, kajian ini dapat dijadikan sebagai
satu panduan kepada pelaksana kurikulum bagi memastikan budaya inovasi sentiasa
menjadi amalan dalam kalangan guru demi mengangkat profesionalisme guru di
Malaysia
