Because of their specific features (isolation, important sea shores, difficult access, scattering, limited natural resources, prone to cultural disasters, large imports, etc.) islands and small island states need to be protected. They represent case studies regarding sustainable tourism, just like arid zones and mountainous regions. This article takes Cyprus as an example to assess positive and negative aspects which, from a tourist point of view, characterize each of the traditional pillars of sustainability: social, environmental and economic, including patrimonial and cultural. The appraisal as described is largely positive.Cyprus; Sustainability; Tourism; Social; Economic; Environmental; Island

Kerinci is a Malayic language spoken primarily in Sungai Penuh City and Kerinci Regency, Sumatra which is considered unique as most lexicons have two or more forms, differing in the phonological realisation of their final syllables. These word-final syllable rhymes are referred to as Absolute and Oblique forms since they bear syntactic functions. This paper describes phonological alternation in numerals and their morphosyntactic functions based on data from a synchronic descriptive study conducted in Koto Renah village, Sungai Penuh, Kerinci. The study reveals that most cardinal and ordinal numbers have two or more forms. The last unit of a compound numeral is the absolute form, while all preceding units are oblique forms. The phrasal alternations in numerals lends credence to the view that the Kerinci language is indeed unique

The “Tinker” Figure in the Children’s Fiction of Patricia Lynch

    Get PDF
This article explores the representation of Travellers or “tinkers” in some of Patricia Lynch’s children’s books from the first half of the twentieth century. One of the first children’s writers to create a world directly recognizable to her young readers, in which she used to shape a concept of “Irishness,” Lynch establishes the “tinker” as a bridging figure between the realism of rural Ireland and the magical “other world” of the supernatural, but belonging properly to neither. Tinkers are tools through which the child is taught, by negative example, to value the domestic realm and to be a good citizen. Relief from the domestic routine should be found in fairy tales, and not in the actual world of the tinkers. Excluded from both the real world and its acceptable alternative, Travellers are denied a legitimate status within an Irish context. Lynch suggests that the only way for a Traveller to become legitimate is to cease being a Traveller. This article explores the representation of Travellers or “tinkers” in some of Patricia Lynch’s children’s books from the first half of the twentieth century.
