Journalism in Second Life
Our research seeks to understand the emerging journalism practiced in Second Life—a computer-generated alternative reality. Framed by postmodernism, this study uses an ideological analysis to evaluate the three Second Life newspapers: the Alphaville Herald, the Metaverse Messenger and the Second Life Newspaper. We suggest that journalism in Second Life focuses on community building and education, considers the influence of the on-line world to resident members\u27 off-line lives and raises important questions about freedom of expression
CMOL: Second Life for Silicon?
This report is a brief review of the recent work on architectures for the
prospective hybrid CMOS/nanowire/ nanodevice ("CMOL") circuits including
digital memories, reconfigurable Boolean-logic circuits, and mixed-signal
neuromorphic networks. The basic idea of CMOL circuits is to combine the
advantages of CMOS technology (including its flexibility and high fabrication
yield) with the extremely high potential density of molecular-scale
two-terminal nanodevices. Relatively large critical dimensions of CMOS
components and the "bottom-up" approach to nanodevice fabrication may keep CMOL
fabrication costs at affordable level. At the same time, the density of active
devices in CMOL circuits may be as high as 1012 cm2 and that they may provide
an unparalleled information processing performance, up to 1020 operations per

Blue Skies: Education in Second Life
This article examines the educational possibilities of the online environment of Second Life, by Linden Labs. Second Life’s economic growth has attracted the attention of corporations, non-profit organizations and government entities. Unlike traditional web-based instruction, Second Life provides a three-dimensional interface through which teachers and students can enjoy a limited form of eye-contact and body language. It also permits collaboration and learning in groups. The article goes on to discuss some of the advantages and disadvantages of using the interface for online learning. It goes on to examine current educational applications and possible future enhancements
Second Life: the seventh face of the library?

Purpose
This paper gives a brief introduction to Second Life, an outline of how one academic librarian has got involved with using it and reviews the issues that have arisen from a library perspective.
Approach
It offers a reflection on whether library activities in Second Life are different to library services in the real world and suggests that Second Life is just another ‘face’ of the library.
Findings
Second Life is still in the very early stages of development. There are various barriers and challenges to overcome before it can be used widely within universities. However, this paper shows it does provide an opportunity to experiment and explore what information resources are required in this environment and how librarianship and librarians need to evolve to cater for users in a three dimensional world.

This paper is based on personal experience and offers as many questions as answers

Lessons learned in developing a Second Life educational environment
Virtual worlds are rapidly spreading beyond gaming and entertainment into education and the corporate world. Should this trend continue, as forecast by the industry, then immersive applications will become more prominent, with bespoke software developed in the metaverse affording both opportunities and challenges. This paper reflects on the experience of developing a learning virtual space based on Second Life as part of an innovation project at The Open University, UK. The paper focuses on the lessons learnt from the viewpoint of managing the development of the learning environment, and could be of benefit to educators and educational technologists who are thinking to engage in this sort of development
