    QUALITY-OF-SERVICE PROVISIONING FOR SMART CITY APPLICATIONS USING SOFTWARE-DEFINED NETWORKING

    In the current world, most cities have WiFi Access Points (AP) in every nook and corner. Hence upraising these cities to the status of a smart city is a more easily achievable task than before. Internet-of-Things (IoT) connections primarily use WiFi standards to form the veins of a smart city. Unfortunately, this vast potential of WiFi technology in the genesis of smart cities is somehow compromised due to its failure in meeting unique Quality-of-Service (QoS) demands of smart city applications. Out of the following QoS factors; transmission link bandwidth, packet transmission delay, jitter, and packet loss rate, not all applications call for the all of the factors at the same time. Since smart city is a pool of drastically unrelated services, this variable demand can actually be advantageous to optimize the network performance. This thesis work is an attempt to achieve one of those QoS demands, namely packet delivery latency. Three algorithms are developed to alleviate traffic load imbalance at APs so as to reduce packet forwarding delay. Software-Defined Networking (SDN) is making its way in the network world to be of great use and practicality. The algorithms make use of SDN features to control the connections to APs in order to achieve the delay requirements of smart city services. Real hardware devices are used to imitate a real-life scenario of citywide coverage consisting of WiFi devices and APs that are currently available in the market with neither of those having any additional requirements such as support for specific roaming protocol, running a software agent or sending probe packets. Extensive hardware experimentation proves the efficacy of the proposed algorithms

    SIP-based proactive and adaptive mobility management framework for heterogeneous networks

    Abstract In this paper, we present and evaluate the performance of a mobility management system called the Proactive and Adaptive Handover (PAHO) system. PAHO is an application-level approach that uses SIP to manage client-initiated connection handoff across heterogeneous networks based on the IEEE 802.21 framework with designated user/configuration policy. Unlike conventional systems which make sub-optimal decision when managing connection handoff due to limited awareness of the relevant context for the application/service being delivered, PAHO defines proper interface to interact with the application as to determine when and to where the handoff and/or codec switching should take place in the event of network performance degradation. The results showed that using the PAHO approach on an audio/video conferencing session helps reducing the overall handover delay from 10.766 s (on non-PAHO system) down to at least 288 ms, and slowing down the degradation of MOS value throughout the entire experiment in the event of signal degradation as well as network congestion. It is also shown that load balancing among the access points (AP) could be achieved with an improved Information Server (IS). r 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

    Load-Aware Traffic Control in Software-Defined Enterprise Wireless Local Area Networks

    With the growing popularity of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD), modern enterprise Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) deployments always consist of multiple Access Points (APs) to meet the fast-increasing demand for wireless access. In order to avoid network congestion which leads to issues such as suboptimal Quality of Service (QoS) and degraded user Quality of Experience (QoE), intelligent network traffic control is needed. Software Defined Networking (SDN) is an emerging architecture and intensively discussed as one of the most promising technologies to simplify network management and service development. In the SDN architecture, network management is directly programmable because it is decoupled from forwarding layer. Leveraging SDN to the existing enterprise WLANs framework, network services can be flexibly implemented to support intelligent network traffic control. This thesis studies the architecture of software-defined enterprise WLANs and how to improve network traffic control from a client-side and an AP-side perspective. By extending an existing software-defined enterprise WLANs framework, two adaptive algorithms are proposed to provide client-based mobility management and load balancing. Custom protocol messages and AP load metric are introduced to enable the proposed adaptive algorithms. Moreover, a software-defined enterprise WLAN system is designed and implemented on a testbed. A load-aware automatic channel switching algorithm and a QoS-aware bandwidth control algorithm are proposed to achieve AP-based network traffic control. Experimental results from the testbed show that the designed system and algorithms significantly improve the performance of traffic control in enterprise WLANs in terms of network throughput, packet loss rate, transmission delay and jitter

    An eco-friendly hybrid urban computing network combining community-based wireless LAN access and wireless sensor networking

    Computer-enhanced smart environments, distributed environmental monitoring, wireless communication, energy conservation and sustainable technologies, ubiquitous access to Internet-located data and services, user mobility and innovation as a tool for service differentiation are all significant contemporary research subjects and societal developments. This position paper presents the design of a hybrid municipal network infrastructure that, to a lesser or greater degree, incorporates aspects from each of these topics by integrating a community-based Wi-Fi access network with Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) functionality. The former component provides free wireless Internet connectivity by harvesting the Internet subscriptions of city inhabitants. To minimize session interruptions for mobile clients, this subsystem incorporates technology that achieves (near-)seamless handover between Wi-Fi access points. The WSN component on the other hand renders it feasible to sense physical properties and to realize the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm. This in turn scaffolds the development of value-added end-user applications that are consumable through the community-powered access network. The WSN subsystem invests substantially in ecological considerations by means of a green distributed reasoning framework and sensor middleware that collaboratively aim to minimize the network's global energy consumption. Via the discussion of two illustrative applications that are currently being developed as part of a concrete smart city deployment, we offer a taste of the myriad of innovative digital services in an extensive spectrum of application domains that is unlocked by the proposed platform

    Optimisation of Traffic Steering for Heterogeneous Mobile Networks

    Mobile networks have changed from circuit switched to IP-based mobile wireless packet switched networks. This paradigm shift led to new possibilities and challenges. The development of new capabilities based on IP-based networks is ongoing and raises new problems that have to be tackled, for example, the heterogeneity of current radio access networks and the wide range of data rates, coupled with user requirements and behaviour. A typical example of this shift is the nature of traffic, which is currently mostly data-based; further, forecasts based on market and usage trends indicate a data traffic increase of nearly 11 times between 2013 and 2018. The majority of this data traffic is predicted to be multimedia traffic, such as video streaming and live video streaming combined with voice traffic, all prone to delay, jitter, and packet loss and demanding high data rates and a high Quality of Service (QoS) to enable the provision of valuable service to the end-user. While the demands on the network are increasing, the end-user devices become more mobile and end-user demand for the capability of being always on, anytime and anywhere. The combination of end-user devices mobility, the required services, and the significant traffic loads generated by all the end-users leads to a pressing demand for adequate measures to enable the fulfilment of these requirements. The aim of this research is to propose an architecture which provides smart, intelligent and per end-user device individualised traffic steering for heterogeneous mobile networks to cope with the traffic volume and to fulfil the new requirements on QoS, mobility, and real-time capabilities. The proposed architecture provides traffic steering mechanisms based on individual context data per end-user device enabling the generation of individual commands and recommendations. In order to provide valuable services for the end-user, the commands and recommendations are distributed to the end-user devices in real-time. The proposed architecture does not require any proprietary protocols to facilitate its integration into the existing network infrastructure of a mobile network operator. The proposed architecture has been evaluated through a number of use cases. A proof-of-concept of the proposed architecture, including its core functionality, was implemented using the ns-3 network simulator. The simulation results have shown that the proposed architecture achieves improvements for traffic steering including traffic offload and handover. Further use cases have demonstrated that it is possible to achieve benefits in multiple other areas, such as for example improving the energy efficiency, improving frequency interference management, and providing additional or more accurate data to 3rd party to improve their services

    Attention to Wi-Fi Diversity: Resource Management in WLANs with Heterogeneous APs

    Many home networks integrate a small number (typically 2-4) of Wi-Fi Access Points (APs), with heterogeneous characteristics: different 802.11 variants, capabilities and security schemes. This paper proposes the consideration of these specific characteristics in order to improve the management of network resources. Three use cases are presented in order to showcase the potential benefits. By the use of a user-space AP, which works in coordination with a controller, the network is able to assign each connected station to the AP that best fits with its characteristics. The system also manages security, avoiding the need of adding specific elements for authentication, encryption or decryption. Extensions are proposed to an existing protocol that defines the communication between the AP and the controller, in order to communicate and store the specific characteristics of each AP and end device. This includes new association and handoff schemes that do not introduce any additional delay. The system has been implemented in a real environment, and a battery of tests has been run using three hardware platforms of different characteristics. The results show that handoffs between bands are possible, and estimate the processing delays, the Round-Trip Time and the handoff delay, which is small enough in order not to produce any significant disruption to the user (10-50 ms). Finally, the scenarios of interest have been replicated in a simulation environment, showing that significant benefits can be achieved if the specific characteristics of each AP and station are considered

    Support of resource-aware vertical handovers in WLAN hotspots

    Endgeräte wie Smartphones oder Tablets bieten häufig eine Vielfalt drahtloser Zugänge zum Internet an. Üblicherweise schließt dies die 802.11 WLANs und auch Technologien drahtloser Weitverkehrsnetze (WWANs) aus dem Bereich LTE oder WiMAX ein. Aufgrund dieser Optionen haben sich die Endanwender daran gewöhnt, überall und zu jeder Zeit auf ihre Internetdienste zuzugreifen. Damit hat auch der Datenverkehr pro Anwender zugenommen, was eine Herausforderung insbesondere für die Betreiber von WWANs ist. Soweit verfügbar, favorisieren Endanwender heutzutage eher einen drahtlosen Zugang zum Internet über WLANs als über WWANs. Des Weiteren haben die 3GPP-Standardisierungsgremien Ansätze erarbeitet, die zusätzlich Verkehr aus WWANs in Netze mit geringerer Abdeckung wie WLAN- oder Femto-Zellen abgeben. Solche Ansätze werden auch als "Traffic Offloading" bezeichnet und haben das Ziel, die WWANs zu entlasten. Dabei werden jedoch eher einfache Strategien verfolgt, die auf der Nutzung zusätzlicher Kapazitäten heterogener Netze beruhen und dann angewendet werden, wenn ein alternatives Zugangsnetz für ein Endgerät verfügbar ist. Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit zeigen wir Gewinne auf, die entstehen, wenn man die Auswahl der Endgeräte für ein WLAN-Netz stattdessen auf Basis der von ihnen belegten Ressourcen durchführt. In diesem Kontext schlagen wir vor, Geräte mit stark negativem Einfluss auf die WLAN-Kapazität wieder zurück in das WWAN zu reichen, was wir als "Onloading" bezeichnen. Ein solches "Onloading" zieht Herausforderungen in unterschiedlichen Richtungen mit sich. Die fortschreitende Miniaturisierung hat in den letzten Jahren zu dem Trend geführt, die Anzahl der Netzwerkkarten (NICs) in Endgeräten zu reduzieren. Wir bezeichnen eine NIC als multimodal, wenn sie mehrere Funktechnologien unterstützt, aber zu einem bestimmten Zeitpunkt immer nur eine davon genutzt werden kann. Deswegen stellt für eine multimodale NIC das "Onloading" während einer laufenden Verbindung eine Herausforderung dar. Wir schlagen einen Ansatz vor, der vorbereitende Mechanismen für ein "Onloading" als auch eine laufende Verbindung im WLAN über eine solche NIC ermöglicht. Des Weiteren ist es wichtig, in einem WLAN Hotspot zu entscheiden, welche Geräte einen negativen Einfluss auf die Kapazität des Netzes haben. Dafür haben wir eine Metrik entwickelt, die eine Entscheidungsgrundlage für das Onloading bildet. Diese Metrik basiert rein auf einer Beobachtung des Netzes und seiner Geräte, ermöglicht jedoch keine Entscheidung für sich neu assoziierende Geräte im WLAN. Erschwerend kommt hinzu, dass viele Eigenschaften der NICs durch herstellerabhängige Implementierungen geprägt werden. Solche Algorithmen bieten eine zusätzliche Herausforderung, da ihre internen Abläufe üblicherweise unbekannt sind. Ein bekanntes Beispiel für solche Algorithmen stellt die Anpassung der WLAN-Link-Datenraten dar. Diese Algorithmen wählen die jeweiligen Modulations- und Kodierungsschemata (MCSs) für die drahtlosen Übertragungen aus. Robuste MCSs resultieren dabei in geringere Link-Datenraten und haben somit einen starken Einfluss auf die Kapazität einer WLAN-Zelle. Aus diesem Grund fokussieren wir uns auf eine Abschätzung der Datenratenwahl eines Endgerätes. Damit lassen sich im Vorfeld Aussagen treffen, ob ein Gerät starken Einfluss auf die WLAN-Kapazität haben wird, so dass es für ein "Onloading" in Frage kommt.End-user devices such as smart phones and tablets have become very popular as they offer a variety of wireless Internet accesses ranging from the WLAN standards to WWAN technologies such as LTE or even WiMAX. Due to these different wireless access options and new emerging applications—e.g., from the areas of video streaming, social networks, as well as Internet clouds—people are increasingly connecting to the Internet with their de- vices while being on the move. In line with this, the number of devices as well as the traffic demand of end users have been reported to increase rapidly over the last years which imposes a strong challenge especially for the operators of WWANs. Thereby, end users frequently tend to use settings that favor a connectivity to the Internet whenever possible rather over WLAN than over WWAN access. Further, the cellular standardization bodies of the 3GPP envision solutions to hand over on-going wireless sessions from cellular to other small cell accesses such as WLANs or femto cells. This is also known as traffic offloading essentially freeing capacity in terms of users with a certain service in the cellular accesses. Nevertheless this offloading follows a rather simple strategy to utilize additional capacity of heterogeneous accesses such as WLANs whenever being available for a given device. This thesis shows that stronger gains can be expected if the selection of devices to be served in WLANs is conducted in a resource-aware fashion including an evaluation of the WLAN traffic in terms of the channel occupation time and MAC overhead as result of contention, interference, and fluctuating channels. In this context, this thesis envisions to onload unfavorable devices negatively affecting the WLAN capacity back to WWAN accesses. A support of such an onloading imposes challenges in different dimensions. From the hardware design of devices, there is a strong trend to limit the number of separate network interface cards (NICs) due to space and cost issues. We refer to a multi-mode NIC if it covers multiple technologies, while at a given time only access to one technology is possible. Thus, smoothly onloading a device with such a NIC is by far not trivial. We present an approach that conducts handover preparation mechanisms, while also allowing a continuous WLAN communication over a multi-mode NIC. Further, it is by far not trivial to judge which subset of associated devices is negatively affecting the capacity of a WLAN hotspot. Thus, a careful evaluation of devices regarding a selection for an onloading back to WWAN accesses imposes a challenge yet. In this direction, we present a performance metric that identifies devices degrading the WLAN capacity. While our performance metric tackles a reactive selection, it falls short to support a predictive evaluation, e.g., of devices which just joined the WLAN cell. Even worse, proprietary algorithms inside a WLAN stack impose a severe challenge as their internal routines are usually not conveyed via typical management interfaces. A well-known example for this category of algorithms are the link data rate adaptation schemes, with which WLAN devices adjust the modulation and coding scheme (MCS) for their transmissions. As MCSs resulting in low link data rates may specifically degrade the capacity of a WLAN cell, we focus on an estimation regarding the data rate selection of a device as a third contribution of this thesis. This estimation enables to select devices that will likely degrade the capacity of the WLAN hotspot for an onloading in advance

    Analysis, design and experimental evaluation of connectivity management in heterogeneous wireless environments

Wireless has become the primary access technology or even the only one, leading to an explosion in traffic demand. This challenges network providers to manage and configure new requirements without incrementing costs in the same amount. In addition to the growth in the use of mobile devices, there is a need to operate simultaneously different access technologies. As well, the great diversity of applications and the capabilities of mobile terminals makes possible for us to live in a hyper-connected world and offers new scenarios. This heterogeneity poses great challenges that need to be addressed to offer better performance and seamless experience to the final user. We need to orchestrate solutions to increase flexibility and empower interoperability. Connectivity management is handled from different angles. In the network stack, mobility is more easily handled by IP mobility protocols, since IP is the common layer between the different access technologies and the application diversity. From the end-user perspective, the connection manager is in charge of handling connectivity issues in mobile devices, but it is an unstandardized entity so its performance is heavily implementation-dependent. In this thesis we explore connectivity management from different angles. We study mobility protocols as they are part of our proposed solutions. In most of the cases we include an experimental evaluation of performance with 3G and IEEE 802.11 as the main technologies. We consider heterogeneous scenarios, with several access technologies where mobile devices have also several network interfaces. We evaluate how connectivity is handled as well as its influence in a handover. Based on the analysis of real traces from a cellular network, we confirm the suitability of more efficient mobility management. Moreover, we propose and evaluate three different solutions for providing mobility support in three different heterogeneous scenarios. We perform an experimental evaluation of a vehicular route optimization for network mobility, reporting on the challenges and lessons learned in such a complicated networking environment. We propose an architecture for supporting mobility and enhance handover in a passive optical network deployment.
