    Real-time scheduling in multicore : time- and space-partitioned architectures

    Tese de doutoramento, Informática (Engenharia Informática), Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de Ciências, 2014The evolution of computing systems to address size, weight and power consumption (SWaP) has led to the trend of integrating functions (otherwise provided by separate systems) as subsystems of a single system. To cope with the added complexity of developing and validating such a system, these functions are maintained and analyzed as components with clear boundaries and interfaces. In the case of real-time systems, the adopted component-based approach should maintain the timeliness properties of the function inside each individual component, regardless of the remaining components. One approach to this issue is time and space partitioning (TSP)—enforcing strict separation between components in the time and space domains. This allows heterogeneous components (different real-time requirements, criticality, developed by different teams and/or with different technologies) to safely coexist. The concepts of TSP have been adopted in the civil aviation, aerospace, and (to some extent) automotive industries. These industries are also embracing multiprocessor (or multicore) platforms, either with identical or nonidentical processors, but are not taking full advantage thereof because of a lack of support in terms of verification and certification. Furthermore, due to the use of the TSP in those domains, compatibility between TSP and multiprocessor is highly desired. This is not the present case, as the reference TSP-related specifications in the aforementioned industries show limited support to multiprocessor. In this dissertation, we defend that the active exploitation of multiple (possibly non-identical) processor cores can augment the processing capacity of the time- and space-partitioned (TSP) systems, while maintaining a compromise with size, weight and power consumption (SWaP), and open room for supporting self-adaptive behavior.     Efficient Allocation And Enforcement Of Interfaces In Compositional Real-Time Systems

    Compositional real-time research has become one of the emerging trends in embedded and real-time systems due to the increasing scale and complexity of such systems. In this design paradigm, a large system is decomposed into smaller and simpler components, each of which abstracts their temporal requirements via interfaces. Such systems are mostly implemented by resource partitions to ensure that the components receive resources according to their interfaces. Potential implementations of a resource partition are via server-based interfaces or demand-based interfaces. In this context, our thesis in this dissertation is as follows: Currently, server-based interfaces ensure strong temporal isolation among components at the cost of resource over-provisioning whereas demand-based interfaces precisely model the resource demand of a component without the guarantee of temporal isolation. For both these models, efficient and effective resource allocation as well as strict temporal isolation among components can be achieved. Specifically, we can obtain efficient and near-optimal bandwidth allocation schemes and admission controllers for periodic resource model and arbitrary demand-based interface respectively. Furthermore, efficient slack reclamation technique can be obtained to allocate unused processing resources at runtime while still enforcing the given interface. To support our thesis, we address efficient resource allocation among components with server-based interfaces by providing fully-polynomial-time approximation schemes (FPTAS) for allocating processing resource to components scheduled by earliest-deadline-first (EDF) or fixed-priority (FP) scheduling algorithm. For enforcing temporal isolation of demand-based interfaces, we provide a parametric approximate admission control algorithm, which has polynomial-time complexity in terms of number of active jobs in the system and the approximation parameter. Finally, to address efficient reclamation of unused processing resources, we give a novel technique to optimally and efficiently determine maximum allowable runtime slack for a component with arbitrary interface, considering active jobs in the system and guaranteeing system schedulability even for worst-case future job arrival scenarios. We expect that these techniques can ultimately be used to minimize the size, weight, and power requirements of real-time and embedded systems by reducing the processing resource requirements of such systems

    Scheduling Real-Time Multi-Task Applications in an Open System

    This paper focuses on the problem of providing isolation and real-time execution in scheduling multi-thread applications on a single processor. The proposed scheduling algorithm can be applied in a wide range of different situations, such as in a multimedia real-time systems, where applications may require a guaranteed level of Quality of Service, or in a network link, where different flows of packets may require a certain level of service. This algorithm does not require the exact knowledge of the service times and interarrival times of the tasks: hence, it is especially suited for soft real-time and multimedia environments
