    The ‘responsibility’ factor in imagining the future of education in China

    Design and creativity have been a considerable force for improving life conditions. A lot of effort has been invested in explaining the design process and creativity mainly through the design thinking methodology, but design accountability and responsible actions in the design process are, yet, to be fully explored. The concept of design ethics is now increasingly scrutinized on both the level of business organization and of the individual designer. A 4-day design workshop that involved creativity techniques provided the base to explore responsibility in the fuzzy front end of the design process. The future of education in 2030 was defined as the workshop's theme and fifty-six students from China were asked to create detailed alternative scenarios. A number of imagination exercises, implementation of technological innovations and macro-environment evolutions employed in the workshop are discussed. The aim was to incite moral and responsible actions among students less familiar with creative educational contexts of student-led discovery and collaborative learning.     Structuring the decision process

    This chapter includes a discussion of leadership decisions and stress. Many leaders are daily exposed to stress when they must make decisions, and there are often social reasons for this. Social standards suggest that a leader must be proactive and make decisions and not flee the situation. Conflict often creates stress in decision-making situations. It is important for leaders to understand that it is not stress in itself that leads to bad decisions, rather, bad decisions may be the result of time pressure in the sense that leaders have not been able to gather enough relevant information. Thus, it is worthwhile for leaders to be able to prioritize properly in order to cope with stressful situations. In some situations, a leader chooses to delegate the decisions to his/her team and then it is important to guard against «groupthink», a phenomenon where members of a team put consensus before anything else as a result of the peer pressure. A number of methods are presented that enable leaders to avoid this phenomenon. Often leaders are involved in decision-making situations where they are forced to navigate between objectives that are in strong conflict with each other. We are talking about «decision dilemmas». These are characterized by the existence of a conflict between the top leadership's desire to control the activities and their wish to give autonomy and independence to the various units.     Education makes the human being a fully realized project. It is a catalyst for the realization of the potentialities of humans. This can only be successfully done if it is acknowledged that the individual is full of immense potential. It’s the logic of learner-autonomy and all that it portends. In many an African setting this logic remains far-fetched. Teaching and learning in most African settings do not give room for the full application and realization of learner autonomy. It has grossly affected the realisation of the full potentials of individuals who are to be agents of development. This paper seeks to expose and address the process of teaching and learning in the African (Nigerian) setting in a way that shows how it defies the logic of learner- autonomy which subsequently affects human and social development. It concludes that education should permit learners to exploit their curiosities and creative acumen as major routes to development

    Validation of a set of design principles to promote knowledge productivity and innovation

    This study explores the learning processes that contribute to knowledge productivity: gradual improvement and radical innovation of an organisation’s procedure and products and services, based on the development and application of new knowledge. The research is based on the assumption that innovation is the result of a series of powerful social learning processes. Based on previous case study research we formulated a set of twelve design principles. Those principles reflect key factors relevant to the innovation processes. The study at hand presents the validation of this set of design principles. The method used is a set of circular scales with which people involved in innovation practices analysed their innovation process. From the data it reveals that the design principles do not miss elements that are essential for innovation practices. The two design principles that seem to be ambiguous and need further elaboration are principles 11 and 12. Furthermore it became clear that reflecting upon an innovation practice works best when doing it together instead of doing this individually

    Entrepreneurial marketing : a historical perspective on development and practice

    Entrepreneurial marketing is a term which is receiving increasing use. It essentially encompasses two very distinct areas of management: marketing and entrepreneurship. This article is dedicated to exploring the emergence of this area of theory, its history and the current developments in the interface between these two areas. Scholars from both the worlds of marketing and entrepreneurship have long identified similarities in the key issues concerning both. Recent years have seen the emergence of increased study in the area of overlap between the two disciplines. Academics working in this field are undertaking research in a number of key areas, namely entrepreneurial management, networking and the resource and skills implications of adopting an entrepreneurial approach to marketing activities. This research has now built up into a sizeable body of literature and this article introduces the reader to the essence of this research and identifies its usefulness in viewing many areas of management
