    A methodology to support strategic decisions in future human space exploration: from scenario definition to building blocks assessment

    The human exploration of multiple deep space destinations (e.g. Cis-Lunar, NEAs), in view of the final challenge of sending astronauts to Mars, represents a current and consistent study domain especially in terms of its possible scenarios and mission architectures assessments, as proved by the numerous on-going activities about this topic and moreover by the global exploration roadmap. After exploring and analysing different possible solutions to identify the most flexible path, a detailed characterisation of several Design Reference Missions (DRMs) represents a necessity in order to evaluate the feasibility and affordability of deep space exploration missions, specifically in terms of enabling technological capabilities. The study presented in this paper was aimed at defining an evolutionary scenario for deep space exploration in the next 30 years with the final goal of sending astronauts on the surface of Mars by the end of 2030 decade. Different destinations were considered as targets to build the human exploration scenario, with particular attention to Earth-Moon Lagrangian points, NEA and Moon. For all the destinations selected as part of the exploration scenario, the assessment and characterisation of the relative Design Reference Missions were performed. Specifically they were defined in terms of strategies, architectures and mission elements. All the analyses were based on a pure technical approach with the objective of evaluating the feasibility of a long term strategy for capabilities achievement and technological development to enable future space exploration.     Fast Power and Energy Efficiency Analysis of FPGA-based Wireless Base-band Processing

    Nowadays, demands for high performance keep on increasing in the wireless communication domain. This leads to a consistent rise of the complexity and designing such systems has become a challenging task. In this context, energy efficiency is considered as a key topic, especially for embedded systems in which design space is often very constrained. In this paper, a fast and accurate power estimation approach for FPGA-based hardware systems is applied to a typical wireless communication system. It aims at providing power estimates of complete systems prior to their implementations. This is made possible by using a dedicated library of high-level models that are representative of hardware IPs. Based on high-level simulations, design space exploration is made a lot faster and easier. The definition of a scenario and the monitoring of IP's time-activities facilitate the comparison of several domain-specific systems.     Asteroid exploration and utilization: The Hawking explorer

    The Earth is nearing depletion of its natural resources at a time when human beings are rapidly expanding the frontiers of space. The resources which may exist on asteroids could have enormous potential for aiding and enhancing human space exploration as well as life on Earth. With the possibly limitless opportunities that exist, it is clear that asteroids are the next step for human existence in space. This report comprises the efforts of NEW WORLDS, Inc. to develop a comprehensive design for an asteroid exploration/sample return mission. This mission is a precursor to proof-of-concept missions that will investigate the validity of mining and materials processing on an asteroid. Project STONER (Systematic Transfer of Near Earth Resources) is based on two utilization scenarios: (1) moving an asteroid to an advantageous location for use by Earth; and (2) mining an asteroids and transporting raw materials back to Earth. The asteroid explorer/sample return mission is designed in the context of both scenarios and is the first phase of a long range plane for humans to utilize asteroid resources. The report concentrates specifically on the selection of the most promising asteroids for exploration and the development of an exploration scenario. Future utilization as well as subsystem requirements of an asteroid sample return probe are also addressed

    Computational Urban Planning: Using the Value Lab as Control Center

    Urban planning involves many aspects and various disciplines, demanding an asynchronous planning approach. The level of complexity rises with each aspect to be considered and makes it difficult to find universally satisfactory solutions. To improve this situation we propose a new approach, which complement traditional design methods with a computational urban plan- ning method that can fulfil formalizable design requirements automatically. Based on this approach we present a design space exploration framework for complex urban planning projects. For a better understanding of the idea of design space exploration, we introduce the concept of a digital scout which guides planners through the design space and assists them in their creative explorations. The scout can support planners during manual design by informing them about potential im- pacts or by suggesting different solutions that fulfill predefined quality requirements. The planner can change flexibly between a manually controlled and a completely automated design process. The developed system is presented using an exemplary urban planning scenario on two levels from the street layout to the placement of building volumes. Based on Self-Organizing Maps we implemented a method which makes it possible to visualize the multi-dimensional solution space in an easily analysable and comprehensible form

    Demonstrating Controlled Change for Autonomous Space Vehicles

    Recent research discusses concepts of infield changes to overcome the drawbacks of conventional lab-based system design processes. In this paper, we evaluate the concept of controlled change by applying it to a demonstration of a potential future space exploration scenario with mobile robots. The robots are capable of executing several image computations for exploration, object detection and pose estimation, which can be allocated to both FPGA-and processor resources of a System-on-Chip. The demonstrator addresses three scenarios which cover application-, environment-, and platform change. The system adapts itself to any of the named changes. This capability can increase the autonomy of future space missions. Exemplary, the demonstrator executes adaption of applications during operation to fulfill the mission goals, adaption of reliability under changing environment conditions, and adaption to sensor failure

    Solar Electric Propulsion for Mars Exploration

    Highly propellant-efficient electric propulsion is being combined with advanced solar power technology to provide a non-nuclear transportation option for the human exploration of Mars. By virtue of its high specific impulse, electric propulsion offers a greater change in spacecraft velocity for each pound of propellant than do conventional chemical rockets. As a result, a mission to Mars based on solar electric propulsion (SEP) would require fewer heavy-lift launches than a traditional all-chemical space propulsion scenario would. Performance, as measured by mass to orbit and trip time, would be comparable to the NASA design reference mission for human Mars exploration, which utilizes nuclear thermal propulsion; but it would avoid the issues surrounding the use of nuclear reactors in space
