Efficient computation of partition of unity interpolants through a block-based searching technique
In this paper we propose a new efficient interpolation tool, extremely
suitable for large scattered data sets. The partition of unity method is used
and performed by blending Radial Basis Functions (RBFs) as local approximants
and using locally supported weight functions. In particular we present a new
space-partitioning data structure based on a partition of the underlying
generic domain in blocks. This approach allows us to examine only a reduced
number of blocks in the search process of the nearest neighbour points, leading
to an optimized searching routine. Complexity analysis and numerical
experiments in two- and three-dimensional interpolation support our findings.
Some applications to geometric modelling are also considered. Moreover, the
associated software package written in \textsc{Matlab} is here discussed and
made available to the scientific community
L\'{e}vy-based growth models
In the present paper, we give a condensed review, for the nonspecialist
reader, of a new modelling framework for spatio-temporal processes, based on
L\'{e}vy theory. We show the potential of the approach in stochastic geometry
and spatial statistics by studying L\'{e}vy-based growth modelling of planar
objects. The growth models considered are spatio-temporal stochastic processes
on the circle. As a by product, flexible new models for space--time covariance
functions on the circle are provided. An application of the L\'{e}vy-based

Modelling of radionuclide migration through the geosphere with radial basis function method and geostatistics
The modelling of radionuclide transport through the geosphere is necessary in the safety assessment of repositories for radioactive waste. A number of key geosphere processes need to be considered when predicting the movement of radionuclides through the geosphere. The most important input data are obtained from field measurements, which are not available for all regions of interest. For example, the hydraulic conductivity, as input parameter, varies from place to place. In such cases geostatistical science offers a variety of spatial estimation procedures. To assess the a long term safety of a radioactive waste disposal system, mathematical models are used to describe the complicated groundwater flow, chemistry and potential radionuclide migration through geological formations. The numerical solution of partial differential equations (PDEs) has usually been obtained by finite difference methods (FDM), finite element methods (FEM), or finite volume methods (FVM). Kansa introduced the concept of solving PDEs using radial basis functions (RBFs) for hyperbolic, parabolic and elliptic PDEs. The aim of this study was to present a relatively new approach to the modelling of radionuclide migration through the geosphere using radial basis functions methods and to determine the average and sample variance of radionuclide concentration with regard to spatial variability of hydraulic conductivity modelled by a geostatistical approach. TVL<sub>1</sub>shape approximation from scattered 3D data
With the emergence in 3D sensors such as laser scanners and 3D reconstruction from cameras, large 3D point clouds can now be sampled from physical objects within a scene. The raw 3D samples delivered by these sensors however, contain only a limited degree of information about the environment the objects exist in, which means that further geometrical high-level modelling is essential. In addition, issues like sparse data measurements, noise, missing samples due to occlusion, and the inherently huge datasets involved in such representations makes this task extremely challenging. This paper addresses these issues by presenting a new 3D shape modelling framework for samples acquired from 3D sensor. Motivated by the success of nonlinear kernel-based approximation techniques in the statistics domain, existing methods using radial basis functions are applied to 3D object shape approximation. The task is framed as an optimization problem and is extended using non-smooth L1 total variation regularization. Appropriate convex energy functionals are constructed and solved by applying the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers approach, which is then extended using Gauss-Seidel iterations. This significantly lowers the computational complexity involved in generating 3D shape from 3D samples, while both numerical and qualitative analysis confirms the superior shape modelling performance of this new framework compared with existing 3D shape reconstruction techniques
TVL<sub>1</sub> Planarity Regularization for 3D Shape Approximation
The modern emergence of automation in many industries has given impetus to extensive research into mobile robotics. Novel perception technologies now enable cars to drive autonomously, tractors to till a field automatically and underwater robots to construct pipelines. An essential requirement to facilitate both perception and autonomous navigation is the analysis of the 3D environment using sensors like laser scanners or stereo cameras. 3D sensors generate a very large number of 3D data points when sampling object shapes within an environment, but crucially do not provide any intrinsic information about the environment which the robots operate within.
This work focuses on the fundamental task of 3D shape reconstruction and modelling from 3D point clouds. The novelty lies in the representation of surfaces by algebraic functions having limited support, which enables the extraction of smooth consistent implicit shapes from noisy samples with a heterogeneous density. The minimization of total variation of second differential degree makes it possible to enforce planar surfaces which often occur in man-made environments. Applying the new technique means that less accurate, low-cost 3D sensors can be employed without sacrificing the 3D shape reconstruction accuracy
Compactly supported radial basis functions: How and why?
Compactly supported basis functions are widely required and used in many applications. We explain why radial basis functions are preferred to multi-variate polynomials for scattered data approximation in high-dimensional space and give a brief description on how to construct the most commonly used compactly supported radial basis functions - the Wendland functions and the new found missing Wendland functions. One can construct a compactly supported radial basis function with required smoothness according to the procedure described here without sophisticated mathematics. Numerical investigation of Differential Biological-Models via GA-Kansa Method Inclusive Genetic Strategy
In this paper, we use Kansa method for solving the system of differential
equations in the area of biology. One of the challenges in Kansa method is
picking out an optimum value for Shape parameter in Radial Basis Function to
achieve the best result of the method because there are not any available
analytical approaches for obtaining optimum Shape parameter. For this reason,
we design a genetic algorithm to detect a close optimum Shape parameter. The
experimental results show that this strategy is efficient in the systems of
differential models in biology such as HIV and Influenza. Furthermore, we prove
that using Pseudo-Combination formula for crossover in genetic strategy leads

A Hybrid Radial Basis Function - Pseudospectral Method for Thermal Convection in a 3-D Spherical Shell
A novel hybrid spectral method that combines radial basis function (RBF) and Chebyshev pseudospectral (PS) methods in a “2+1” approach is presented for numerically simulating thermal convection in a 3-D spherical shell. This is the first study to apply RBFs to a full 3D physical model in spherical geometry. In addition to being spectrally accurate, RBFs are not defined in terms of any surface based coordinate system such as spherical coordinates. As a result, when used in the lateral directions, as in this study, they completely circumvent the pole issue with the further advantage that nodes can be “scattered” over the surface of a sphere. In the radial direction, Chebyshev polynomials are used, which are also spectrally accurate and provide the necessary clustering near the boundaries to resolve boundary layers. Applications of this new hybrid methodology are given to the problem of convection in the Earth’s mantle,which is modeled by a Boussinesq fluid at infinite Prandtl number. To see whether this numerical technique warrants further investigation, the study limits itself to an isoviscous mantle.Benchmark comparisons are presented with other currently used mantle convection codes for Rayleigh number 7 · 103 and 105. The algorithmic simplicity of the code (mostly due to RBFs)allows it to be written in less than 400 lines of Matlab and run on a single workstation. We find that our method is very competitive with those currently used in the literature
