    Reliable multicast transport architecture designed for heterogeneous mobile IP environment using cross-layer information for enhanced Quality of Service (QoS) and seamless handover is discussed. In particular, application-specific reliable multicast retransmission schemes are proposed, which are aimed to minimize the protocol overhead taking into account behaviour of mobile receivers (loss of connectivity and handover) and the specific application requirements for reliable delivery (such as carousel, one-to-many download and streaming delivery combined with recording). The proposed localized retransmission strategies are flexible configured for tree-based multicast transport. Cross layer interactions in order to enhance reliable transport and support seamless handover is discussed considering IEEE 802.21 media independent handover mechanisms. The implementation is based on Linux IPv6 environment. Simulations in ns2 focusing on the benefits of the proposed multicast retransmission schemes for particular application scenarios are presented

    Supporting service discovery, querying and interaction in ubiquitous computing environments.

    In this paper, we contend that ubiquitous computing environments will be highly heterogeneous, service rich domains. Moreover, future applications will consequently be required to interact with multiple, specialised service location and interaction protocols simultaneously. We argue that existing service discovery techniques do not provide sufficient support to address the challenges of building applications targeted to these emerging environments. This paper makes a number of contributions. Firstly, using a set of short ubiquitous computing scenarios we identify several key limitations of existing service discovery approaches that reduce their ability to support ubiquitous computing applications. Secondly, we present a detailed analysis of requirements for providing effective support in this domain. Thirdly, we provide the design of a simple extensible meta-service discovery architecture that uses database techniques to unify service discovery protocols and addresses several of our key requirements. Lastly, we examine the lessons learnt through the development of a prototype implementation of our architecture

    A grid computing system is designed for solving complicated scientific and commercial problems effectively,whereas mobile computing is a traditional distributed system having computing capability with mobility and adopting wireless communications. Media and Entertainment fields can take advantage from both paradigms by applying its usage in gaming applications and multimedia data management. Multimedia data has to be stored and retrieved in an efficient and effective manner to put it in use. In this paper, we proposed an application layer protocol for delivery of multimedia data in wireless girds i.e. multimedia grid protocol (MMGP). To make streaming efficient a new video compression algorithm called dWave is designed and embedded in the proposed protocol. This protocol will provide faster, reliable access and render an imperceptible QoS in delivering multimedia in wireless grid environment and tackles the challenging issues such as i) intermittent connectivity, ii) device heterogeneity, iii) weak security and iv) device mobility.Comment: 20 pages, 15 figures, Peer Reviewed Journa

    The main goal pursued in this Thesis is to contribute towards the design and development of an end-to-end solution/system that would assist in reliable, consistence, less packet-loss delivery of high-quality video signals of pre-recorded presentations, training lectures, live events such as seminars over standard IP networks. This Thesis will focus on the existing Internet Service Provider, Oman Telecommunications Company (Omantel) and its best delivery of high-bandwidth data such as video to its Local and regional offices and departments over IP networks. This video-over-IP system aims to accumulate the technical scientific knowledge required to be able to offer high-quality video, which is fully scalable over IP networks. It aims to convert this knowledge into experimental prototypes, which, after the Thesis, can be developed into an integrated generic environment for Video-over-IP service development and content production. The objective is to initially define the functionality of content Services that can be incorporated into the operations of Oman telecommunications company networks. Then define the functional characteristics and system requirements necessary for the deployment of content streaming services over Omantel IP based networks. The design of this system would be combined with streaming high-quality video, while maintaining scalability and bandwidth efficiencies required for large-scale enterprise deployment. The design would encompass various components that are needed to capture, store and deliver streaming video to desktops. It will investigate on what is required to deliver quality video over Omantel IP networks and will recommend the actual products and solutions for achieving the end result

    Performance Evaluation of Scalable Multi-cell On-Demand Broadcast Protocols

    As mobile data service becomes popular in today's mobile network, the data traffic burden irrevocably increases. LTE 4G, as the next-generation mobile technology, provides high data rates and improved spectral efficiency for data transmission. Currently in the mobile network, mobile data service solely relies on the point-to-point unicast transmission. In the ever-evolving 4G mobile network, mobile broadcast may serve as a supplemental means of pushing mobile data content from the data server to the mobile user devices. As part of the LTE 4G specifications, the mobile broadcast technology referred to as eMBMS is designed for supporting the mobile data service. From eMBMS, SFN broadcast transmission scheme allows data broadcasting to be synchronized in all cells of a defined core network area. LTE 4G also enables single-cell broadcast scheme in which data broadcasting is taking place independently in every cell. In this thesis, besides SFN or single-cell broadcast transmission, a hybrid broadcast transmission scheme in which SFN and single-cell broadcast transmission are used interchangeably in the same network based on the network conditions is proposed. For on-demand data service, the pull-based scheduling protocols from previous work are originally designed to work in a single-cell case scenario. With slight modifications, the batching/cbd protocol can be adapted for multi-cell data service. A new combined scheduling protocol, that is cyclic/cd,fft protocol, is devised as the second candidate for multi-cell data transmission scheduling. Based on the three broadcast transmission schemes and the two broadcast scheduling protocols, six mobile broadcast protocols are proposed. The mobile broadcast models, which correspond to the six mobile broadcast protocols, are evaluated by analysis and simulation experiment. By analysis, the cost equations are derived for calculating average server bandwidth, average client delay and maximum client delay of the mobile broadcast models. In the experiment, the input parameters of broadcast test models are assessed one at a time. The experimental results show that the hybrid broadcast transmission together with cyclic/cd,fft protocol would provide the best server bandwidth performance and the SFN broadcast transmission together with batching/cbd protocol provides the best average delay performance
