    MONICA in Hamburg: Towards Large-Scale IoT Deployments in a Smart City

    Modern cities and metropolitan areas all over the world face new management challenges in the 21st century primarily due to increasing demands on living standards by the urban population. These challenges range from climate change, pollution, transportation, and citizen engagement, to urban planning, and security threats. The primary goal of a Smart City is to counteract these problems and mitigate their effects by means of modern ICT to improve urban administration and infrastructure. Key ideas are to utilise network communication to inter-connect public authorities; but also to deploy and integrate numerous sensors and actuators throughout the city infrastructure - which is also widely known as the Internet of Things (IoT). Thus, IoT technologies will be an integral part and key enabler to achieve many objectives of the Smart City vision. The contributions of this paper are as follows. We first examine a number of IoT platforms, technologies and network standards that can help to foster a Smart City environment. Second, we introduce the EU project MONICA which aims for demonstration of large-scale IoT deployments at public, inner-city events and give an overview on its IoT platform architecture. And third, we provide a case-study report on SmartCity activities by the City of Hamburg and provide insights on recent (on-going) field tests of a vertically integrated, end-to-end IoT sensor application.Comment: 6 page

    Integration of heterogeneous devices and communication models via the cloud in the constrained internet of things

    As the Internet of Things continues to expand in the coming years, the need for services that span multiple IoT application domains will continue to increase in order to realize the efficiency gains promised by the IoT. Today, however, service developers looking to add value on top of existing IoT systems are faced with very heterogeneous devices and systems. These systems implement a wide variety of network connectivity options, protocols (proprietary or standards-based), and communication methods all of which are unknown to a service developer that is new to the IoT. Even within one IoT standard, a device typically has multiple options for communicating with others. In order to alleviate service developers from these concerns, this paper presents a cloud-based platform for integrating heterogeneous constrained IoT devices and communication models into services. Our evaluation shows that the impact of our approach on the operation of constrained devices is minimal while providing a tangible benefit in service integration of low-resource IoT devices. A proof of concept demonstrates the latter by means of a control and management dashboard for constrained devices that was implemented on top of the presented platform. The results of our work enable service developers to more easily implement and deploy services that span a wide variety of IoT application domains

    Adoption of vehicular ad hoc networking protocols by networked robots

    This paper focuses on the utilization of wireless networking in the robotics domain. Many researchers have already equipped their robots with wireless communication capabilities, stimulated by the observation that multi-robot systems tend to have several advantages over their single-robot counterparts. Typically, this integration of wireless communication is tackled in a quite pragmatic manner, only a few authors presented novel Robotic Ad Hoc Network (RANET) protocols that were designed specifically with robotic use cases in mind. This is in sharp contrast with the domain of vehicular ad hoc networks (VANET). This observation is the starting point of this paper. If the results of previous efforts focusing on VANET protocols could be reused in the RANET domain, this could lead to rapid progress in the field of networked robots. To investigate this possibility, this paper provides a thorough overview of the related work in the domain of robotic and vehicular ad hoc networks. Based on this information, an exhaustive list of requirements is defined for both types. It is concluded that the most significant difference lies in the fact that VANET protocols are oriented towards low throughput messaging, while RANET protocols have to support high throughput media streaming as well. Although not always with equal importance, all other defined requirements are valid for both protocols. This leads to the conclusion that cross-fertilization between them is an appealing approach for future RANET research.     A survey on mobility management protocols in Wireless Sensor Networks based on 6LoWPAN technology

    International audienceMobility has the advantage of enlarging WSN applications. However, proposing a mobility support protocol in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) represents a significant challenge. In this paper, we propose a survey on the mobility management protocols in Wireless Sensor Networks based on 6LoWPAN technology. This technology enables to connect IP sensor devices to other IP networks without any need for gateways. We highlight the advantages and drawbacks with performances issues of each studied solution. Then, in order to select a typical classification of mobility management protocols in WSNs, we provide some classification criteria and approaches on which these protocols are based. Finally, we present a comparative study of the existing protocols in terms of the required performances for this network type

    As there is an increase in (IOT) Internet of Things, there is a growing implementation of Internet of things in many areas in our day-to-day life. Internet of things entails the linking of different embedded devices like appliances, weather stations and even toys to the internet using the Internet Protocol. Surveys say that the number of embedded devices that are IP-enabled will outnumber the total personal computers in the near future. 6LoWPAN is the name of a concluded working group in the Internet area of the IETF. 6LoWPAN is the technology that enable small, low powered embedded devices to access the internet. 6LoWPAN is a protocol definition that makes IPv6 packets to be carried on top of low power wireless networks, specifically IEEE 802.15.4. In this literature survey, I am going to give the details about the architecture and design of 6LoWPAN, the routing protocols used, and the security and privacy mechanisms used. There are three types of Lowpans: Ad-Hoc lowpan, Simple lowpan and extended lowpan. I am going to write about the innovative ways to implement security in 6LoWPAN. 6LoWPAN is different because of its small address size and low power features. Hence, to make 6LoWPAN secure new and unique challenges needs to be addressed. The routing protocols in 6LoWPAN are very sensitive because of the limited node’s capabilities in terms of power, transmission range and so on.
